I come to Illegal Pete’s all the time and it’s usually very consistent but this time I was left quite disappointed. It was an empty Sunday night and I got a togo quesadilla which had just a few chunks of meat in it. For $13 they shouldn’t skimp on the meat especially since the other ingredients are just cheese and tortilla. Staff is always friendly though.

We shared the chicken bowl with white rice, grilled chicken, black beans, cheese, black olives and cilantro and it came with a side of chips. The chicken seemed overcooked and a little chewy. All the other ingredients were great. We did arrive later in the evening for dinner. It felt like the college town near campus restaurant where the staff are partially dialed in but friendly. Great location on Pearl Street Mall. There’s only two tables outside facing Pearl Street. Street parking only. If you park about three blocks away it’s free parking.

It had been nearly 15 years since my last encounter with an Illegal Pete’s burrito, and I’ll admit—I was nervous. The kind of nervous you get before reconnecting with an old friend you haven’t seen in ages. Would it be the same? Would the magic still be there? Or was it all just fondly remembered hype?

I’m happy to report: the friendship is alive and thriving. Like no time had passed at all. Illegal Pete’s is still, without question, home to some of the best burritos I’ve had in my entire life. I went with the chicken burrito—rice, black beans, extra guac—and for all intents and purposes, it was flawless. One bite in, and it felt like I’d never stopped eating there.

That burrito didn’t just feed me—it unlocked pure nostalgia and made my trip to Boulder, Colorado, genuinely unforgettable.

Probably not coming back here, I don’t love waiting for my food for 10 minutes while it’s sitting in the bag on the shelf behind the counter because a bunch of burnouts would rather socialize than acknowledge customers that they already know are waiting for their order.

It’s a slower, more expensive version of Chipotle. And the food is pretty much the same. Dude asked what I wanted, then literally wandered off. I had to wait for guy number two to actually make my order. Pro tip, don’t smoke ALL of the pot at once, save some.

This is basically just a different way to eat Chipotle. The food was solid, but uninspiring. I got the Mexican Coke carnitas, which was good but nothing special. I paid extra and added the pork green chile sauce and was excited to try it, but I was disappointed in the pedestrian flavor profile; just salty rather than actual chile flavor.

The inside seating area was full and there were two tables outside with benches, one of the benches couldn’t be sat on correctly because the pavers underneath weren’t level so it basically made for a game of teeter totter while trying to eat a large burrito. The bathrooms were also in pretty dire need of attention and as always scrounging for parking on Pearl Street in the late afternoon/evening was a challenge.

If you’ve had Chipotle or Qdoba, you’ve had Illegal Pete’s. Not a bad meal, I was just hoping for more.

This place was poppin on a Friday night but service was still excellent. We ordered the kids bowls and it was still so much food. All around great food and experience.

Great food and Atmosphere. It reminds me of Chipotle, only better. I had the Baja Fish Burrito with Rice. It was very good. I highly recommend this place to anyone in the area. We will be back. Thanks for the great food and nice staff. Come see it for yourself. The prices are very good too.

Maybe it was the time of day or..? The food as always=excellent. Although it’s been almost 10 yrs since I last ate here as I’d moved away. The staff was less than attentive and maybe it’s just the “new level expected of customer service” which is just above automaton automated robot service…but still, the credit card prompts you to tip regardless of the actual “SERVICE” you receive. The atmosphere was quiet and only 2-4 other guests were present. The place was very clean and well organized and a i said, food was excellent, that’s what really matters.
