Reviews
I ordered the chicken tortellini soup, which was a bowl of chicken stock and tortellini, nothing else. A bit in the simple side, but it wasn’t bland. I wouldn’t order it again, though. For my entree, I ordered the gnocchi in Bolognese sauce. The gnocchi were cooked perfectly, and the sauce was flavorful and had small bits of meat. My one complaint was that it didn’t have more meat, it almost felt like they forgot. My wife ordered the Chicken Parmesan, which looked like a cheese pizza with a fried breaded chicken cutlet. It also had the wing attached on the side, maybe an added bonus? Anyway, head’s up, this is not your American style restaurant where if you order chicken parm it comes with pasta. This was a la carte. My wife and I split the broccoli rabe, which was sauteed with olive oil and garlic. Simple but tasty. My wife also ordered the potatoes, which were baby potatoes pan fried with rosemary. Again, nothing fancy. My friends ordered meatballs, and the branzino. They both agreed their meals were tasty.
Our server was attentive, but we could tell he was either overloaded with tables, or just trying to get food out to the tables. We didn’t really interact with him too much, and when I dropped my forks on the floor, my wife gave me one of hers before our meal. I asked our server for a new set, he saw I had my wife’s salad fork and said “That’s why we give you two” and never remedied it. For what we paid, I’d expect a higher level of service.
The restaurant itself looks very elegant, classy yet not stuffy. It was a little loud near the bar area, but the area our table was at seemed to be less so.
That said, the food itself was good. We ordered the **calamari**, **Caprese salad**, and **spaghetti bolognese**, and all three dishes were flavorful and well prepared. The calamari was crisp without being greasy, the Caprese had fresh mozzarella and juicy tomatoes, and the bolognese sauce was rich and comforting — exactly what you’d hope for from a classic Italian pasta. Portions were generous, and the quality of the ingredients stood out.
Unfortunately, the slow pacing of service took away from the meal. We waited quite a while between courses, and getting refills or extra bread was challenging with how busy the servers were. While our waiter was friendly and doing his best, the restaurant just seemed understaffed for the crowd that night.
Overall, Il Mulino delivered solid Italian food but lacked the warmth and polish that would make it worth a return visit. Between the freezing temperature, slow service, and noisy, chaotic environment, it was more of a 3-star experience than a 4. If you’re staying nearby and craving good pasta, it’s worth a try — but go in expecting good food, not a relaxing dining experience.
To start, the cheese and meat tray, mussels, and calamari were absolutely amazing bursting with flavor and perfectly prepared. And whatever you do, don’t forget to order their famous bread basket! It’s a must.
Be sure to ask about the “Carmello Special” you won’t regret it. And of course, top off your dining experience with one of their delicious desserts.
Mangia!!
Carmelo went above and beyond to make the evening special, always checking up on us and creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere that elevated the entire meal. Amazing food is easy to find, but service like this is rare. We’ll absolutely be back and not just for the incredible dishes, but for people like Carmelo, Steven, and Pedro who made my family feel so well taken care of.
