It’s a Peaks Island Pizza Party All Summer Long at Il Leone

The alfresco oven turns out bubbly Neapolitan-style pies loaded up with Maine toppings. Margherita, salami, asparagus, and cherry-tomato pizzas from Il Leone.

I was recommended to stop here even if I wasn’t making a trip to Peak’s Island because the pizza is supposed to be THAT good. While the wait time is fairly insane (40 minutes for 1 pizza), I can definitely say the pizza was incredible. The freshness of the tomatoes were unmatched, and the dough and cheese were very nice. Service was fine but there definitely is not enough seating for the amount of people that were eating and the amount waiting for their food at around dinner time. Will go back if I ever make my way back to Portland!

A 15 minute ferry ride from Portland brought us to Il Leone on Peaks Island. I had read about their lobster pizza and we decided to try. The wait was one hour, while waiting for our pizza we heard people moaning about how good the pizza was. That reminded me of my first ride on Space Mountain where the longer the more scared I got, here the longer I waited the hungrier I got.
Unfortunately, the pizza did not live up to my expectations. It was very soggy and the toppings slid off the dough even. I could not eat it as a pizza. The crust was nice, and the amount of lobster was generous. But it just did not work together.

The price of the pizza was not listed for lobster pizza, as it was market price. It is $44 in July 2025. Two pizzas, two gelatos and one coke plus tip was $137.

Can’t wait for Il Leone to reopen for the season! Dreaming of the pizza we had last year. Awesome summer spot. Pricey pizza but honestly, it’s acceptable given the location on Peaks Island. Hope you can give it a try next time you’re in the Portland area!

Was excited to try this place! We got there at 11:45 and stood in line until they opened at Noon. We were about 10-15 people back in a line. We waited about 30 minutes to order after they opened. After ordering and after we already paid they told us our wait for the food was 1 hour and 20 minutes! That is insane!! They had a huge pizza oven and were cooking 1 pizza at a time?? Why wouldn’t you advise people before they pay $140 for a few pizzas and 2 coke cans (almost $300 for our families of 8 to eat lunch) that the wait was an hour and 20 minutes before you would get your food. For that to be how you run your business is wild anyone ever eats here. After an hour and with multiple hungry kids we told them we wanted our money back. We were wasting the time we had on the island waiting for pizza for 2 hours. I wish we were able to try it.

Amazing!! Like being back in Napoli. Yes, it’s that good. Never thought I would find good pizza napoletana in New England, let alone GREAT pizza napoletana. Pictured is the Diavola, burratina, e Bufalina. Bufalina is my favorite. You can BYOB. Setting is gorgeous. No bathrooms just an FYI. Pro Tip: order online upon ferry arrival. Pricey but WORTH IT for legit pizza without flying back home to Italy. Will be returning.

An incredible establishment and an amazing addition to the island! Not only is the pizza 5-stars but the team who works with Il Leone are thoughtful, talented and generous. Can’t recommend enough. If you’re on the island it’s a must-visit.

Il Leone catered our wedding on Peaks and it was a huge hit with our guests. Whether you’re just stopping by for a slice or considering them for an event, we can’t recommend enough!

Let me start by saying that everyone else I was with, and they all ordered different pizzas from mine, really enjoyed their meals, which is why I’m not giving one star. I ordered something different, and my experience was not great.

I ordered the pizza rossa, if i’m remembering the name correctly, with the $5 anchovies add-on. I could count on one hand the basil leaves that were on my pizza (four, to be exact). Same goes for the anchovies, which sucked more since i paid extra for them. There were literally two anchovies on my pizza, sliced in half to make four anchovy slices. I was honestly not impressed, and I can’t say I’m eager to go back.

Wait time for the food was a bit long, but that wasn’t too surprising or bothersome since it’s a very small establishment with only a few employees.

A pizza run to Il Leone is a peak Portland experience. Catch the ferry on a summer evening, amble down to the Lion’s Club green. What you find there is pretty perfect: the pizza oven roaring behind a cluster of petite picnic tables, the cafe lights twinkling above, the glow of the sun and the water just beyond the tree-line.

All the pizzas that I’ve tried have been superb, thanks in no small part to the deliciously charred naturally leavened dough that gives them their base. I do have some favorites: I love adding burrata to the Diavola, the mellow creaminess of the cheese against the peppery salami calabrese. The L’Estate is a glorious celebration of our fleeting tomato harvest. And when I’m feeling fanciful and fancy, the Aragosta is hard to resist: lobster, lemon, basil, just a hint of chili – it’s a beautiful thing.

Delicious pizza! Size of a paper plate and made fast! One pizza is enough for one person. Friendly and helpful service. Highly recommend going later in the evening to nosh and then watch the sun set behind the city. Plenty of seating and parking available. Prices on the high end but worth it for the location and experience.
