So after a trip to Ikea with my sister, we stopped by IL Gabbiano. The initial vibes gave us the beginning scenes of a mob movie, haha.

We were sat at a table facing the water, which was amazing. Our service was pretty good. For my appetizer, I ordered the octopus, which honestly was one of the best octopus dishes I’ve had in a very long time. For my main course, I ordered the beef Bolognese; I wasn’t really a big fan. For dessert, I got the chocolate lava cake, also very good.

We have been here before with Leeann as our server. We previously gave them five stars but today’s experience was so sad. We were promptly seated in a two top on the window below the bar. A group of staff (severs) were huddled upstairs within our sight and theirs but besides being given water, we asked for lemon for them, which never arrived, nor did a server. After 12-15 minutes of no one approaching, we walked out. The hostess thanked us for coming. We told her no one waited on us so no need to thank us. Another huge disappointment was they had a limited menu today. The prices for the exact same items we have ordered in the past were today, $6-$8 more. Don’t they know their regular customers know their prices and this, compared to NO service is the reason we weren’t able to enjoy a meal In this gorgeous restaurant on the water, so the reason for one star. We cannot recommend based on today’s experience. We did go to Brazi’s and enjoyed excellent service. Sad day for Il Gabbianos.

A perfect place for either a casual or formal dining in New Haven. Nice decoration and located by the sea. Huge portions of delicious food at a reasonable price. We were all pleased with our order. Excellent and friendly service.

We were quite excited to try this place and were disappointed. To start off, there was an event across the way ( I understand this is not their fault, but it should definitely be noted). We were reserved to sit outside but opted to sit inside because the music at the event was obnoxiously loud. It was the Playlist event at canal boat house, so anyone looking to go around the time of this event should make note not to go. You cannot hear yourself think outside, and it was upsetting considering it was a beautiful evening and would have been nice to sit outside.
Overall, the food was fine. It was not horrible, but I’ve definitely had better seafood at other waterside restaurants in New Haven. We had the mussels to start, which were pretty good. We enjoyed the sauce they came in. We were not given bread to start off with, which we saw other tables receive as they sat down. When we were given bread, we were not given the olive oil the other tables were. My husband had the pasta dish with shrimp and calamari and egg style noodles. The shrimp was overcooked. I had the seafood pasta and had the same issue with the shrimp. The white sauce it came with was quite flavorless. However, the clams and mussels were good. My husband enjoyed his expresso martini, but my French 75 had too much lemon (if you read my other reviews you will know I’m usually not that fussy). We then waited a ridiculously long time for dessert (chocolate lava cake). Service honestly could have been so much better. We were seated at the exact same time as another couple and ordered the exact same amount of food, and they left over half an hour before we even got our check. 3 groups around us had the same waiter, but we randomly had a different one, and felt like he was running around the whole restaurant and honestly kept forgetting about us. One huge thing this restaurant should work on is how they assign waiters to tables. Why did we have a random waiter on our side when he had to sprint around the whole place? But the waiter serving the other tables near us was present and barely moved past a medium walk speed. Overall, based on this experience, I would not come back.

Came in alone at a fully packed bar with a single seat available with no elbow room. Some corporate event was taking over most of the bar space, both seats and next to the bar. Despite how incredibly hectic it was, the servers were FANTASTIC. I felt like a princess. As soon as a better spot opened up, one held the spot and moved me over. My water was always full. I didn’t have to wait for anything. Someone even brought me an extra napkin without me asking. On top of impeccable service, the food and drinks were fantastic. The pork siciliano was fabulous and perfectly cooked. The bar staff was working like a well oiled machine.

I’ve seen some iffy reviews in the past few weeks but give them another chance!

Located right by the sea, this restaurant offers a truly spectacular view that perfectly frames an unforgettable culinary experience. From the very beginning, the service is attentive and warm; we were served by Carlos, whose kindness and professionalism were exceptional, though the entire staff stands out for their phenomenal hospitality. They genuinely make you feel at home.

The food is delicious. The clams, in particular, tasted as if they had just been pulled from the ocean—so fresh and exquisite, their flavor transports you and invites you to dream. Every bite reflects a dedication to quality and detail that is hard to come by.

Without a doubt, this is a place you must visit if you are in Connecticut—whether you’re just passing through or live nearby. A seaside gem that blends beauty, flavor, and hospitality in every sense.

This place deserves every one of its five stars! While the price tag, especially for pasta, is quite high, everything else about this restaurant was exceptional. The location on New Haven Harbor offers a phenomenal view of the water, making it an ideal spot for a memorable meal. Inside, the contemporary decor and warm, inviting atmosphere create a sophisticated vibe, with a beautifully renovated space centered around a large bar and a slightly lower terrace that opens to the bay through expansive glass windows. The lighting at night was superb, enhancing the modern yet maritime ambiance that sets the stage for a wonderful dining experience.
The service was outstanding—our waiter, with cruise-ship level expertise, made us feel like VIPs. His recommendations were spot-on, and he engaged in friendly conversation that made us feel genuinely welcome. The food didn’t disappoint either; the pasta tasted homemade, with rich, flavorful sauces, and the seafood, appetizers, and cocktails were equally outstanding, with portions that were truly generous.

I have been wanting to get here for years. Finally went last night. Our waiter was a gem. Restaurant itself is beautiful. The food….horrendous! The meatballs were legitimately like boulders! I’ve NEVER in my life seen meat so tough! Could NOT cut with a fork. My right hand to God, the meat was so compact, it was almost like a solid piece of meat. I don’t know how a restaurant if this level could serve them. In all honesty, they were that bad. Arancini ehhhh. They were decent. Sea bass was good, but not better than Lalupa and in no way worth the money for the portion. Chicken parm was not up to par. Chocolate mousse cake was tough! How??? I have no idea. There was a band there that was great. The atmosphere was so great as was our company but the food was very disappointing. I wanted to love it, but sadly I didn’t. There is no way there are that many people who just don’t know good food. It’s keeping a crowd for its location and interior which again, is beautiful.
