It all started with a promise and from there it was built on a vision. Gaetano Gravino was a hairstylist who had found part time work at a doughboy shack in Oakland Beach. This part time work turned into an opportunity that spoke to his entrepreneurial spirit – the same spirit that lives on in his wife and children: Sally, MaryAnn, David, and Guy. When the chance came to lease the establishment, Gaetano and his wife Sally took it. And in 1989, Iggy’s Doughboy and Chowder House was born – coined after a nickname given to him by his son, David. The featured dish at the time was the red chowder – the recipe a family secret created by Sally herself.

This acclaimed chowder house overlooking Narragansett Bay serves seafood & deep-fried dough.

Lots of choices in their menu. Price is reasonable and the portion was actually generous. There are seating location outside and also inside. Definitely better than Monahan’s.
Parking is via street parking.

A must stop when on the Rhode Island coast. Iggy’s offers a very tasty variety of fresh seafood meals. The clam strips are excellent, and the portion size is very good. The lines get quite long at meal times, but they do move quickly. For our second visit, we came at an off time, and the service was much quicker (and food was hotter). We will definitely continue to make a point of visiting Iggy’s whenever we are in the area.

I wouldn’t waste my time stopping here. The fried clam bellies were very greasy and the price of 23.00 for the small amount that you get I don’t think is reasonable compared to other places I have recently eaten the same dish. They probably should remove the word chowder from there name because it wasn’t anything to write home about. In fact it tasted a whole lot like dirty dish water with potatoes in it. The lobster in the lobster roll had very little lobster flavor. I’m guessing they probably get frozen claw and claw knuckle meat delivered to make their lobster rolls. Finally, for the nearly $4 that they charge for a soda, they refused to offer even one free refill! Seriously is it not worth the 10 cents worth of syrup to create a little Goodwill? Well, they gave No Good Will and I give no good will. I would pass this place by. There are plenty of other places and they are better as well.

Review for Iggy’s Doughboys & Chowder House – Narragansett, RI
By a Seafaring Soul with a Stomach for Salt & Satisfaction

Arrr matey, if yer sails ever bring ye ashore in Narragansett when the wind’s blowin’ cold and the sea’s whisperin’ tales of hearty eats, point yer compass toward Iggy’s Doughboys. Aye, we docked ourselves there on a brisk day, the kind that stiffens the bones—but soon found warmth and comfort sittin’ fireside with my beloved wife, the flames cracklin’ like a good sea tale.

We ordered a mighty spread fit for a hungry crew: fish and chips that were golden and crisp, with tender fish that’d make any sailor hum a shanty. The clam strips—light, fresh, and none too chewy—tasted like they’d just been hauled from the briny deep. Both the white and clear chowders were served piping hot; the clear one was brothy and rich with ocean flavor, while the white was creamy without capsizing the palate.

And aye, no voyage would be complete without Iggy’s famous clam cakes

Have wanted to try Iggy’s for a while now and was very pleased with everything. Ordered the fish and chips, 3 doughboys, the clam strip meal, one New England clam chowder (creamy), and one RI clam chowder (clear broth). Everything was fried perfectly, fresh tasting, NOT tough, overcooked, or fishy. While I thought both chowders tasted good, I must say I preferred the clear broth chowder.

I would happily take the hour long drive to eat here again. While the price was pretty steep for two meals and the doughboys, I should include that there was enough food for 4 people even with just two meals, so lucky us were able to have it for another meal!

Food was yummy. Lobster roll Could have been a bit hotter.

We taste tested the New England and RI chowder. Family prefers the NE. RI had no clams.

This place has always been on my list and it was worth the trek! My favorites were the clam fritters and the sugared doughboys. Swoon worthy when piping hot. The hot and cold lobster rolls were decent but not my favorites- though the buns were nicely toasted with salted butter the way I like them. When in the area, I will be back.

Let’s play the Waldo game. Where or where Are the clams in the two things they are known for? Extremely greasy had to wait 20 minutes to get a cup of chowder and some clam cakes. And cost 12 bucks. I will never go here again and you shouldn’t either.

Iggys continues to live on nostalgia and less on quality nowadays. The clam cakes have shrunk considerably through the years and this year took the cake. It was the smallest it has ever been and with 36 clamcakes, I may have had 9 clams. That’s ridiculous. It’s like ordering a cake with no frosting. What’s the point. I’d rather pay the extra dollar to have them loaded like they use to be. Please Iggys, come back to me! I’m begging you please! And the service is going so far downhill. It might be easy to hire all high school kids but you have to have a manager there who knows what he’s doing. When you order three dozen clam cakes and a half dozen doughboys and you wait an hour… yet you have seen your order sitting on the shelf for 26 minutes… its not right. If you have an easy order like that and it’s sitting there you don’t have to wait for your number to be called just give the customer their order. No wonder why they were wet like doughy and spongy. And barely warm. Not cool. Let your workers know when the order comes up and it’s sitting there for 20 minutes even though there’s 20 numbers ahead of you, hand it out to the customer. It becomes almost inedible at that point and at your new price point that’s not acceptable. See the pictures to see the new size of what you will be getting even though the price has tripled. Appreciate you Iggys.

Nice place open year round. Seating inside. Parking. Bathrooms. And good food at reasonable prices. What more can you ask for.

Cold January winter day stopped by and had seafood platter. Perfect for two people. Whole belly tastes off so did not continue eating that. But everything else was good. $44 w two del lemonade.
