Reviews
I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for an authentic South Indian food with great Filter coffee!
In evening on weekends they have Puri sabji combo offer also, which is also very tasty. Must place to visit.
When I placed my order over the phone with Mr. Ahmed on my way, I was impressed by his patience and thoughtfulness. He inquired about my estimated arrival time, and upon learning it was about 30 minutes, he assured me that my order would be freshly prepared and ready as soon as I arrived. This was much appreciated, as warm South Indian food like pongal and idlis is best enjoyed fresh.
The Idly Express location is conveniently situated within a strip mall near the Safeway on Almaden. While it can get busy, there’s usually ample parking available, making it easy for a quick pickup if you don’t mind carrying your order a short distance. The store itself has limited dine-in space, with a few tables primarily for senior citizens.
The service I received from Mr. Ahmed was exceptional. He promptly confirmed my order and, as promised, had it ready exactly when I walked in. I also observed him consistently providing courteous and service-minded interactions with all customers during my brief time there. Additionally, the kitchen team deserves recognition for their efficiency in preparing takeout orders quickly. It seems many items might be prepared in a central kitchen, streamlining the packaging process at this location.
Regarding the food, the thate idlis were flavorful and went well with the sambar and coconut chutney. However, I personally found them a bit dry, perhaps because I’m accustomed to the softer idlis found in Karnataka and Tamilnadu. I also needed more podi than what was provided, though I had some at home. In hindsight, I should have checked my bag and requested extra. On the other hand, the pongal was fantastic – rich with ghee and reminiscent of the IE/Mylapore style, pairing wonderfully with the sambar. Next time, I’ll be sure to add a medu vadai to complete the meal! Overall, it was a great experience.
I also picked up some dosa batter and pickles. The Vadu Manga pickle (tender baby mangoes) was fresh and delicious with curd rice, and I found this batch to be much better than a previous one I purchased from the Westgate dine-in location. The refrigerated section mainly had batter and pepper rasam available, and the limited variety that day might have been due to popular items selling out.
A+ for Service and Food Quality.
First edit: response below from the hotel says I edited my review to add bunch of stuff while I had made zero edits on my review. And all I am pointing out and asking for is better communication to customers. And thanks for acknowledging that this place is take out only.
Visited on a weekday evening, there were no other customers in the shop. We ordered food for dine-in and requested whatever food becomes ready to be served instead of waiting for entire order to be ready.
In about 10 mins lots of customers started showing up and almost everyone was picking up their orders. That’s when we realized we were on a long virtual queue.
I repeatedly checked with the cashier if any food we ordered was ready, but we were given no clear response. After some time cashier started ignoring us. We finally got the entire order after 30 mins.
30 mins wait for a Vada, Dosa is ridiculous. But I would have been ok if we were informed about wait time while ordering or given a courteous response.
Idly was awesome – sour and soft. Sambar wasn’t sweet- so that was great. Also, I felt it had a strong flavor of coriander powder – so watch out for your liking 🙂 all of us liked the sambar!
They don’t have dosas unfortunately 🙁 but the tomato chilli onion uttapam added a nice variety to our table! I really loved the vadas, it was aptly flavored and tasted fresh!
Portions were great – very filling and not too greasy/ heavy. Pongal was tasty, we felt it needed a little more salt.
My tea loving friends seemed to like the tea! 🙂 I also tried Buttermilk- was decently good. It had no tadka and salt was a little less. It is mildly spiced, in case you were looking for that factor.
Oh! Also, they had pickle chutney powders available for sale, looked really appetizing!
Loads of parking available in the lot where the restaurant is. Note, they did have some clean seating in the restaurant, but only for senior citizens. The same set of wooden tables and chairs were available right outside the restaurant. Would suggest to be prepared for the winter times 🙂
People here are also very helpful, especially Ahmed helps out each time, takel care of the customers.
