We had an incredible experience at Ichiryu Omakase in West Caldwell. From the moment we sat down, Rudy made the evening special , he remembered each person’s name, was extremely friendly, and kept everyone engaged throughout the entire experience. It truly felt personal and welcoming.
Every course was absolutely delicious and beautifully prepared. My favorite was the madai (Japanese Red Sea Bream) . It was incredibly fresh, delicate, and perfectly balanced. The dessert was outstanding and the perfect way to end an already amazing meal.

This place is outstanding. We came for a birthday celebration and were blown away. The food was incredibly fresh and flavorful—I’m still dreaming about it. Chef Rudy was incredible and knowledgeable and his flavor combinations delivered delicious bite after another. Since this was our first omakase experience, he took time to explain everything and made wonderful conversation throughout the meal. He also went above and beyond to make the birthday boy feel special haha.
The ambiance is cozy and charming—I loved the speakeasy concept of boba tea by day, omakase by night. Even the dessert was absolutely delicious (we were tempted to lick our bowls!). Whether you want to impress a date, celebrate a special occasion, or simply enjoy an exceptional dinner, you literally can’t go wrong here. Easily one of my top 3 restaurants across 4 continents.

The omakase at Ichiryu (located at Cobra Tea) in West Caldwell is fresh and fantastic! They have 12 and 18 courses and you need to make a reservation. They also have delicious don bowls for lunch that I stop in for regularly and the best bubble tea — no reservation needed for this and I usually get it to go. They are super nice people. Make a reservation and go see Rudy. You won’t be disappointed. It’s a great omakase experience even if it’s your first time. I have allergies and they are so accommodating.
Atmosphere is basic but clean and welcoming and you will have the best service.

If you love omakase, Ichiryu is a must. We’ve been on a long quest to find a quality option when a neighbor mentioned it. We decided to give it a try and are so glad we did. Full transparency, it’s a bubble tea storefront with a very small operation (6 seats, 1 chef) at a modest counter tucked in the back. There are no frills to the ambience and you have to be ok with that because it’s in exchange for fresh, creative, and sophisticated flavors abundant in every bite of their 12 or 18 course offerings. Rudy is humble, clever, and as likable as they come. A genuine connection to your sushi chef is uncommon so this was a pleasant surprise. The portions are generous and the variety of fish beats all the other options in our area. The service was provided by 1 helper and she was delightful. Water glasses were never empty, empty plates never sat longer than a minute, and dessert was her contribution to the experience. Don’t sleep on it either! She pours her love into it, all homemade, and absolutely divine. I gave ambience 5 stars because it’s in the eye of the beholder. If truly delicious food is all you seek- you may as well be dining in a palace. This place is a diamond in the rough and it deserves recognition.
