The Ichiban Story As veterans of the food service industry, siblings Kam and Ling Ngai knew what they wanted to do with Ichiban Brand. The restaurant was to be simple, clean, open. The food is surprising, inventive, delicious. Excellence was the watch word. Excellence on a daily basis. And the long-term goal was to expand the meaning of Asian cuisine in the Metro Area. Although the food was very, very good and presented on a very clean buffet, my bill had an automatic 15% gratuity added to the credit card charge. The forced gratuity was not advertised as part of the price. I had already left cash on the table and would not have agreed to a $9.40 total tip for a $38.50 lunch buffet. In my mind add-ons like this are thievery. Also, how can a tip be less or none in the case of bad service? There is no incentive for wait staff to perform basic service if a 15% gratuity is always provided. For buffets 10% is still the usual starting point for consideration of tips. This is not what I would have expected from an otherwise classy looking place. I am very disappointed and will not come back while this practice is in force. If a business has to go up on price then go up on price, don’t try to sneak it in.

My family visit this location a few days ago. My daughter loves this place. The restaurant is beautiful and the service is fair but it’s not the best for the cost plus the additional 15% they add to every tab. On this particular day, the food bar was bare and they had just opened. The vegetable rice was old and seemed to be reused from the night before. It took them about 20 minutes to replenish the most popular foods and when they did bring it out, it was hot and fresh but the taste was horrible. No flavor. Something has definitely changed with this restaurant over the years and it’s not great.

Kathleen Quinn doesn’t understand that in most places outside of the U.S. the “tip” is added into the servers wage, which is what this places seems to be doing, they just want to let you know. The sign warns you ahead of time so next time read it before you complain or eat somewhere else.

The venue was quiet and the decor was modern. The layout of the Buffett area is such that the tables are away from it so that one can comfortably sit and enjoy a meal and conversation with their party. The server came and went often to check on drinks and police up dishes.

Love the atmosphere and how bright it is in the restaurant. Staff was a little slow but they were busy. Be careful they add 15% tip on every check regardless, which I think is stupid. Food was amazing, best in town for sure.

Hey guys. Used to love eating here. It seems that over the last couple of years the food quality has dropped. Customer service here is average. For a better all arouns experience go to the Ichiban Chinese buffet in Flowood, MS of Lakeland, Dr. Careful not to confuse with the Ichiban Japanese steakhouse on Lakeland Dr. as well. That is good hibachi as well.
