We’ve been to Hurricane Grill & Wings over 5 times, but this visit was nothing short of disappointing.
I ordered the “Blackened Mahi Mahi topped with mango/pineapple red pepper salsa and cilantro” as advertised IN THE MENU. What came out the first time (photos attached) was a dry, chewy, grilled chunk of fish—definitely not blackened. The “mango/pineapple salsa” was nothing more than a plain, bland pico de gallo, in fact calling that “pico” would be disrespectful to actual pico.
When I pointed this out, our server Erin tried to excuse it by saying the mango/pineapple was a “paste sauce” (which never appeared) and then, with a rude tone, asked me if I wanted it or not. I reminded her that I didn’t ask for substitutions—I asked for the dish as described on the menu. The second attempt was slightly less sad, a juicier piece of what was technically mahi, but still grilled, not blackened, and clearly not fresh. Same boring pico de gallo on top, still no trace of mango nor pineapple.
Other food was hit or miss:
• Sweet potato fries: solid.
• Broccoli parm: tasty.
• Chicken Hurricane Salad: good.
• Chimichurri Steak (ordered medium): first one was dry and did the walk of shame back to the kitchen hand in hand with the rubber mahi, second try was juicier but still overcooked. At that point, we were done trying.
The biggest letdown? The service. Erin was dismissive, rigid, and completely unprofessional when faced with simple, justified criticism. She even interrupted us several times when telling her what we didn’t find okay with our dishes. Not attentive, not welcoming, and certainly not the kind of service that makes you want to come back.
What’s most frustrating is that we’ve had positive experiences here before (different server and more like “bar food”!) But consistency clearly isn’t their strong suit—neither in the kitchen nor in service. A place that can’t deliver what’s on the menu and treats regulars like this doesn’t deserve more than 2 stars.
Ok so here is the thing, last week I ate here on Tuesday and spent $80 on people and loved the experience and food.
Today, I ate with my son for dinner. They were busy with a party inside so we chose to eat outside. We got seated originally near the fire pit which was nice. I waited to order after one girl was running around with every table but our seat. I understand they were busy. Then the bar man himself came and apologized and took our order.
Then I got jumped on by a frog! Then my son and I moved seats…we waited 40minutes for our food and nothing, so I had to ask the waiter and barman to check on it.
I had ordered wings to go with two sides and then a quesadilla for my son and cold shrimp for me.. So I was wondering why my cold shrimp and a quesadilla took 40min or so. The barman had someone bring it out asap. The togo food was closed and I assumed it was fine.
I ate and my son ate and left. The shrimp was the ok and needed more ol’ bay seasoning..
Anyways, here is the kicker on top of it all, we get home to serve the wings and no second side they missed our fries all together! So I called the google number and it rings twice and then says not in service and disconnects.. I reported it to google to. So ya on this rainy night, I tipped and got togo for 1 meal, only for the meal to be missing a side.
SO ya it was pretty good during the week at 4:30/5pm, with no one there but on a BUSY time DO NOT go there! If you do, check your food and expect to wait. I guess people who do go there for the alcohol aspect don’t rush and can be there for two hours…
That being said the barman took off the price of my shrimp when leaving (which was kind), but then getting home with no second side was like ok …. maybe only during slow times will we go back.
Wings are good, the staff does try, but when their busy its too chaotic and I FEEL bad for them, as they could be such great place as they are kid friendly!
One of these days I will try again…
The food was subpar, the only thing that was okay was the garlic parm sauce for the tenders. My husband got sides of cilantro lime rice that was severely undercooked and still crunchy then the broccoli stems were moldy.
