I was looking forward to returning to Hunan Lion since the reopening. The renovation was well done. Service is always prompt but not particularly friendly. There were two of us for lunch. There were a fair number of other diners. I started with Hot and Sour soup. It had some spicy warmth but not much flavor. There was very little meat nor tofu. Mostly bland broth. It was disappointing. Our entrees were Crispy Orange Chicken and War Shu Chicken, both with very bland fried rice. My personal opinion if I had known the fried rice was so bland I would have stayed with the steamed rice. $3.00 for a serving of bland rice was certainly not worth it. The War Shu Chicken was served with gravy. It was an ample and flavorful dish. The Crispy Orange Chicken was also tasty with a rich, orange flavor TGAT I love. But the chicken pieces were slivers of mostly batter. The sauce was spot on but without chicken it was a plate of flavored batter. Not a great food experience. I’ll give it maybe one more visit but if more of what I had today that will be it. And after looking through several other diner comments sharing my sane thoughts, it’s not just me. I hate to say it but it looks like quality is being sacrificed for higher prices and lower quality food; a recipe for disaster.

A staple in the Bethel Rd. area of Columbus. Just reopened and beautifully redone. Layout and decor make for an elegant/upscale atmosphere with cozy lighting and intimate seating. The bar area is also great.

The menu features all of the American style Chinese food favorites, with additional Thai influenced items. Full bar, decent Saki menu, limited wine list.

The part that really makes it 5 star is their service. You can tell everyone that comes here has always came here, and the warm and inviting atmosphere make it what it is. Also shout out to Carlos! A great addition to any team, any where.

Visited Saturday, 02-07-2026. Arrived 5:45 pm to a crowded entry. Graciously greeted by the hostess. Seated by 6:20 pm. Left at 7:15 pm with an outstanding dining experience. Received excellent, gracious, and well-paced service. All drink and food was excellent. Manhattan, plum wine, beef satay, mini Tai spring rolls, pan-fried noodle combination, and pineapple chicken. All food served hot and fresh. Will return again. So glad the owners are back up and running. This is a gem in the community.

We have loved Hunan Lion for years. We were saddened when they had to close. But so happy that they are back!! The food is just as good as it was before. There was a small price increase however it’s inline with what all other area restaurants are now charging for dine in dinner. We got some of our favorite stands. Orange Chicken and pineapple chicken. Both were perfectly sauced and still crispy. We started with the appetizer sampler which was so good. See photos for pics of all the mentioned food items! It was also so nice to see the old faces of the staff we used to see almost 2 years ago now. They even remembered us which was kind of embarrassing since that means we go too often. This won’t change however, they are still the same every other week visit for us.
The upgrades to the dining rooms and restrooms were much needed and brings this Columbus staple back to new life! Highly recommend this place for the best American style Chinese in Columbus.

We were excited to try Hunan lion. We used to frequent Hunan House but has closed down. Hunan Lion is very clean and atmosphere is great but we were not satisfied with the food. We ordered hot and sour soup that was OK, but it did not have any wood ear mushrooms like it should have plus it’s pretty expensive compared to other places that have better soups. The general Tso chicken was sweet with no spice and just did not have much flavor. The pad Thai was mediocre, it seemed like it was lacking fish sauce, tamarind and had no peanuts. I should have known better not to order Thai food since it is not a Thai restaurant.

Boy were our expectations exceeded. I see why this is one of the most popular spots in the city. Get the spring rolls, you won’t regret it. We were talking about them all the way home. The sesame chicken was very flavorful, as was the sweet and sour chicken which had a great outside crunch. Fried dumplings weren’t our favorite, but still had really good flavor when paired with their ginger sauce. I had a hot tea to drink which complimented it all nicely. Wonderful evening and will be back very soon! Great and friendly staff.

We stopped over today. Large crowd. But minimal wait. I ordered the shrimp and scallop fried rice. It comes hot but can be lowered or raised as to amount of heat. Was very good with a lot of shrimp and scallops. The spring rolls were very good also. Glad they were able to reopen

Definitely an upscale Chinese restaurant. We did nit have a reservation on a Sunday night so we had to wait 20 minutes to be seated but it was well worth it. This will be our new go to restaurant for Chinese food but we will make reservations going forward. They also do lot of take out orders.

A group of 10 of us were here for Chinese New Year celebration. The renovated interior was elegant and beautiful. We shared 7 dishes and split the cost evenly, $30/person that covers tips and taxes. everyone enjoyed the food and the portion was just right. A wonderful evening! Sorry, I forgot to take pictures.

It’s back open! And the entire city knows it! Large crowd expecting some of the best Chinese in town, and it certainly tasted like it. So, first off, large crowd so reservations are key. We went to wait in the bar and had some very enticing and delicious drinks and some fun conversation.
We ended up eating in the bar area at a table and that probably was a mistake. The server probably wasn’t used to being a server of that many tables in a bar area. He missed us several times and people who came in after us were long gone. Despite that, the house made it correct and thanked us for coming back.
The appetizers, the food, the atmosphere, were all what you would expect. Hadn’t missed a beat. The sauces and tastes were really something I had forgotten how good they were. Crowds were still coming in as we left. I can see that many people had missed this establishment for a long time.
