hunan kitchen has been a staple for yearssss, truly my fav restaurant ever and hands down the best chinese food i’ve had!! the interior has plenty of seating, making it great for both family dinners and group gatherings. the owners are a couple: a super friendly woman and the diligent chef. the service is always attentive and fast and the food comes out SOOO quickly. portions are also huuuge at consistently high quality. what really sets this place apart is the depth of flavor, the spice levels are just right. you taste the chili, sichuan peppercorn, and mala fragrances, along with that unmistakable wok hei!! nothing feels muted or overly aggressive.
– one must-order is the hunan bbq fish (君山烤鱼). at just over $30, ITS SUCH A STEALLL for what you get: an entire seabass served in a massive chafing dish, surrounded by a medley of vegetables like cauliflower, potatoes, lotus root, and peppers. the fish is tender and flaky, not overly salty or spicy, but infused with a beautifully fragrant mala heat. it’s perfect for celebratory meals or sharing with a big group
– the sautéed preserved pork with dried smoked bamboo shoots (烟笋炒腊肉) is an absolute classic. the cured pork belly has an intense smokiness that hits you immediately, with alternating bites of rich fatty pieces and deeply savory lean cuts. the bamboo shoots add texture and soak up all that flavor
– their poached sliced beef in hot chili oil (水煮牛肉) is another standout. the beef is incredibly succulent, swimming in a chili oil broth that’s bursting with aroma without being overwhelming. this dish can often be too oily or salty elsewhere, but hunan kitchen nails the balance!
– the sauteed diced chicken with chili pepper (辣子鸡) is my all time FAVVV and something i’ve loved since growing up. the chicken is perfectly crispy and crunchy while staying juicy on the inside. paired with dried chilies and peppercorns, the numbing spice slowly creeps in and builds as you eat. its ADDICTING in the most dangerous way, and i genuinely cannot stop eating it every time
– the stir-fried diced chicken with green peppercorn (青花椒鸡丁) offers a slightly different flavor profile that i really love. the chicken is tender, and the green peppercorn brings a refreshing, citrusy, almost electric numbing sensation that feels lighter and brighter compared to red chilies. it’s bold and a really fun contrast to some of the other dishes
– for something non spicy, the seafood and japanese tofu (海鲜玉子豆腐) is PURE COMFORT FOOD for me. the tofu is lightly crisped on the outside but sooo silky inside, topped with soft fish fillets, huge shrimp, and a rich, glossy sauce packed with umami. i ascend every single time i eat it LOL
overall, hunan kitchen is insanely worth it for the price. the portions are massive, the quality is consistently high, and for how authentic and flavorful the food is, it’s honestly such a steal. you get way more than what you pay for, especially when ordering family style, and they even offer lunch specials, which makes it easy to come back often for a quick meal. it’s such an underrated spot in katy and i wish more people talked about it :’) this place deserves way more love!!

Came here on a recommendation from my co-workers and man is it good. The first time I came I was unsure what to order so I went with General Tso’s chicken and through a stroke of luck they brought me the wrong dish but it looked good and I just went with it. It was the spicy crispy chicken and I gotta say, it was quite tasty. I’m not even sure how to describe this dish except that it has a very floral taste/aroma to it that has to be experienced to understand. It also has a numbing agent in the spices that really activates when you take a sip of something cold. Tried a few dishes here and they were all good and I especially like the egg drop soup. All in all, an easy place to recommend to others.

Went to Hunan Kitchen with my daughter and boyfriend. We had a blast. Small, quaint with unique flavors tonally our meals. Clearly they give their meal preparation a lot of attention.
Overall, ambiance, food, portions and service was over the top. The crawfish were awesome addition.

After 5 years, I finally found good Chinese food in Katy!!! EVERYTHING was awesome!! There is so much flavor. The crab puffs,yum. Green onion pancake is very flaky. Ummm that salt and pepper shrimp ohhhh my! Loved it!! I could go on about this place:) keep up the good work. I can’t wait to bring my family ❤️

I’ve tried every Chinese restaurant in Katy – including the frequently-mentioned ones. And they’re definitely good. But Hunan Kitchen is my favorite. Not sure why it doesn’t get talked about often – it’s like it’s under the radar or something. On a plus side, nobody has anything negative to say, so I guess that’s something!
In particular, I love the xialongbao, spicy wontons, hot & sour soup, sautéed cabbage Chinese style, Orange Chicken, moo shu pork.
And the Beijing/Peking Duck (although you do have to reserve that 1 day ahead).

do not go here, service is terrible, i went in for lunch, wanted to order general tsaos beef, fist it was no, then it was yes, I asked about adding shrimp, said id pay more, replied, no, just one. made me feel like they didnt want my business, even though they did not close for another hour. the whole time I was there, I felt like I was a burden. So, I obliged, and left. i wont EVER go back. never been inside before, but ordered delivery and the quality has been bad. i guve a big thumbs down to this place.

First time trying and I was satisfied! I did take out but everything I ordered was delicious. I’m always weary on trying new spots with particular food but definitely happy I did here. The prices are great and the portions make sense! I had leftovers and they warmed up great.

I went to go pick up my food and the cashier automatically set me up to tip her 18 percent. I asked her I just tipped you and than proceeds to act if she couldn’t understand me, while smiling in my face. I will never go back to this restaurant again. I don’t deal with a PickPocket Business. That’s what you call good fortune when you pickpocket a customer.

Great food! It tasted wonderful and I would definitely eat here again, as far as the service, the waitress could not quite understand my husband when his Dr Pepper ran out and he wanted to order a strawberry fanta instead. Long story short, we are still sitting here with no drink refill while the wait staff and cooks are eating their own meals. It is 2:29pm…not trying to be a complainer, maybe they should have more staff on the floor attending to the tables, just a suggestion.

I wish I had taken a pic of the Xiao Long Bao too, because they were great. All the food was delicious, and the service very good. The restaurant is clean and inviting as well.
The menu has loads of photos for many of the items, which is very helpful. It’s also a large menu with a much greater variety of dishes than many Chinese restaurants in the area. Many traditional items too! Also they have lamb dishes! Yum.
I highly recommend this restaurant, and if you eat in rather than take out, you can try delicious things that don’t travel well like the steamed buns and aforementioned soupy dumplings!
