Great Chinese food! A bit more authentic than the average. The flavours are great – if it was a little spicier with all dishes, it would have hit the spot.

Sichuan beef was good, but didn’t stand out. However, fish filet in hot chili oil just hit the spot. Loved their generous use of sichuan peppers in the dish. Mouth was buzzing with the kick from peppers and savory delicious flavors. There was a bit of wait to get the food (30mins), but totally worth it. Will definitely come back and recommend others too.

Hunan stir fried pork and hot sour soup are excellent. The level of spiciness is just nice especially the sliced fish fillet in chili oil. Overall food is great and comforting.

As of April 2023, I would say Hunan Bistro is probably top two best Chinese food in Austin. Another one is Bamboo House for sure.

Hunan Bistro is delicious. All of the dishes we ordered were seasoned well and cooked right. This is definitely a good place to go to get a more traditional style chinese food.

This was our first time trying out this restaurant and were very disappointed. The dine in experience is severely lacking and would benefit from an understanding of how to prioritize customers meals, hiring more staff as well as keeping the restaurant clean, organized & inviting for customers. There was a lot of clutter near the entrance of the restaurant where we were seated. Our server failed to mention that the wait would be well over 30-40 min. She never checked on us in the interim or apologized for the long wait. The server seemed to be the only person taking care of the whole restaurant and hence was just spread too thin. In an effort to save costs, this restaurant does a great disservice to its customers. We ordered the spicy green beans which were delicious but the Mapo tofu was super salty. The special Sichuan peppers used in the dish were also numbing to the tongue and hence made the food difficult to enjoy. We love spicy food but did not enjoy the food at the restaurant or the service and will definitely not be back.

I haven’t had such an authentic Chinese food full of wok-hay for a long while, especially in Austin. We ordered 3 stir fry dishes: toothpick lamb, Singapore rice noodles and stir-fried preserved pork with smoked bamboo shoot. All are really flavorful, and the amount is generous. Food tastes fresh and goes well with white rice. I would suggest you to go early for dinner during the weekend, as the wait can be really long. We were lucky to grab an empty table and seated right away, but since there’s only 1 waitress she’s been stretched really thin. Don’t expect any attentive services like you would expect in western restaurants, but she is helpful. Also there seems to be limited number of chefs in the kitchen, so we waited ~30 mins to get our dishes served. We will be back but will consider either pickups or coming in early next time.

The Dan Dan noodle here may just be the best I’ve ever had! 夫妻肺片,金牌笋干菜扣肉 were flavorful as well. I am looking forward to coming back regularly to try the rest of the menu. There’s about 6 tables in the restaurant, and only 1 front of house lady taking orders, bussing the tables. They are currently using to go containers to serve the dishes and party cups for water; probably because they’re so short staffed — I don’t really mind, but just in case you are considering going for a special occasion.

This restaurant has become my Monday regular. The consistency varies a bit on the same dish. Some days can be a bit more spicy, other days can have too much pepper corn, which makes the dish very numbing to eat. Overall, my coworkers and I enjoyed every visit.

It’s kind of busy on weekends, but only 1 waitress serve all the tables.
