Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa | Grand Wailea | A Waldorf Astoria …
Reviews
As a native Newyorker I can tell you that not only did you uphold the Waldorf Astoria reputation but you exceeded it which I thought was hard to do.
Now to the important stuff, the food was absolutely amazing. We started with the Venison Lumpia and Ahi Agua Chile which was as classic as you can ask for. They didn’t try to reinvent the wheel but kept to the classic chili water and then embellished with perfect accompaniments.
My wife had the Scallops which were cooked to perfection. I had the Snapper with each layer there was another surprise, just simply delicious. The garlic mashed potatoes were velvety smooth and perfectly seasoned, just enough salt without being salty.
Driving into the Grand Wailea, parking is easy. Pull up to the Valet and they park your vehicle for you. Valet parking is validated at the restaurant.
The walk to the restaurant is a bit lengthy as you will need to walk into the hotel, then exit to the left down stairs leading to the lower outside levels. It’s a beautiful walk through the gardens and very scenic. Approaching the restaurant, you’ll find the beautiful surrounding water, begin to hear the waterfalls and magnificent statues.
Once inside, the restaurant presents a warm friendly island vibe, with it’s warm amazing wood interior and thatched roof design reminiscent of some of the places I had visited in Tahiti. The fish swimming in the walkup bar immediately caught my attention.
The our server was very friendly, offering a description of the fare and the Catch of the Day. Smiling, she wished us a Happy Anniversary and efficiently took our order.
The food arrived quickly, and was a beautiful display of fish and vegetables. The Fish was tender and delicious. The broccoli grilled with the garlic was flavorful and I typically don’t eat broccoli and the black rice was excellent. It was all very filling.
Humuhumu is a great place to celebrate life’s events or even just to experience one of the best restaurants on the island.
It’s our first time tasting Hawaiian local food and the fish dishes are fantastic, they are very different and special, the meat tenderness and sauce is very flavorful, and they blend well together!
Not to mention the beautiful ambient environment, the restaurant is above a lagoon and we can see colorful coral from where we sat.
The restaurant is a must-try if you are also staying at Grand Wailea, and we are so impressed with the food, the service and the experience overall!
We started with the crab cakes, which were absolutely delicious — crisp on the outside, tender inside, and full of flavor. For our entrées, we had the salmon and the catch of the day, both beautifully prepared and perfectly cooked. My wife felt the dishes were a little on the salty side, but that was really the only minor complaint from an otherwise fantastic meal.
Overall, a wonderful dining experience with excellent service, great food, and a beautiful setting. Highly recommend.
I’m giving it three stars because of the service our server kept forgetting what we ordered and the food arrived really late. The Kids menu he never put in the order so our kids food arrived after we had already finished our meal. Yes, he gave a complementary ube bread, but it was still too late. The kids were hungry and the buttered noodles and the chicken teriyaki arrived after the appetizers and main course . He also forgot to put in the crab cakes order .
We had the West Coast oysters, Ahi, pacific snapper, Brussels, carrots, buttered noodles, and chicken teriyaki.
By far the most expensive meal I’ve had on the island which I don’t mind paying for a great meal but this was not! The filet mignon was terrible, the cook was like it was poached! Not a nice sear on it at all. The lobster was very chewy and the octopus was not charred but slimy. Wasn’t impressed with the service either, it was our 25th wedding anniversary which we had on our reservation yet nothing was said or done for us. We live down the beach from this place but I won’t be back.
Had the prices been a little more affordable, we likely wouldv’e tried the steak. The ambiance was beautiful and our server, Michael, was wonderful.
Thank goodness we were only coming for drinks. We’ve eaten at some amazing restaurants, but at $30 per drink we left without a buzz and a credit card that was pretty sure we’d paid for dinner for 4 and not drinks for 2.
That said, the ambiance was why we came and it delivered! I wish we’d been able to make it earlier to see the sunset because I’m sure it would have been breathtaking.
Service was good, but not on par with the pricing in my opinion. The drinks were perfect, but attention was most definitely paid to groups that had appetizers, entrées, and cocktails stacked in front of them and therefore promised a hefty tip. Hard to blame them, but when drinks were the only thing we were having.. I’d hope that they’d be replenished more swiftly without me needing to flag someone down who is, by default, right in front of me (we sat at the bar).
Overall, I would like come back here with a reservation, during sunset, for a special occasion. But I think I need a raise first…
