The original Hula’s in Monterey was born in 1998, essentially reviving the Tiki Culture. The vision was to create a place where friends, family, and extended family could come together, relax, have fun; and fill their souls and bellies. For 28 years Hula’s has been the local’s favorite. The question of “what is your cuisine?” is best answered with “whatever we are inspired to cook and serve as long as it’s from a tropical climate”. Hula’s offers a wide range of Southeast Asian, Hawaiian, Caribbean, Latin America, and Pan-Asian dishes; and warmly welcomes you to “our house”. Serving premium cocktails too. Brilliant guest has this to say about, the original Hula’s, – CARL: It feels good to be here.
Tropical, tiki-inspired outpost offering a range of Hawaiian eats with an American spin & drinks.

I had a margarita that was amazing (can’t remember which one it was, but it was definitely worth ordering!). For food, I went for the spicy Thai chicken, not too spicy, just really tasty and full of flavour.
All in all, a great place to stop for good food, great drinks, and a really welcoming vibe. I’d happily come back.
But the food … chef needs basic understanding of food chemistry.
Appetizer: abalone style calamari. Vile. Def Cuttle fish, bland , seemed boiled, reheated.
Main: same sauce from the cuttle fish app
This lime ginger sauce needs salt, some sweetness may be apple juice. It’s monotone with lime and ginger.
Coleslaw: tasted astringent due to the amount of mustard and ginger. inedible!
Crab curry: so much potential! Had to put a ton of salt. but again needs less ginger, something sweet .
It was a torture.
You can surely do better.
The staff are generally very friendly and accommodating. One waitress was particularly thoughtful when she realized we were vegetarians, which we really appreciated.
The food is absolutely delicious and there are many vegetarian options. We can particularly recommend the bowls (Buddha and Jungle) and the cakes and pies (Key Lime and Passion Fruit).
