I always go for the Miso Ramen because I love the rich thick broth, and it is actually not as easy to make as most people might think. Miso paste is thick, if you don’t put enough of it there is no taste, too much of it, it will turn into a sludge. So you will have to balance out the soup base. The joint knows how to make the perfect miso broth base, almost as good as my favorite joint Misoya in Chicagoland. The noodles were perfect, along with the ground meat, the veggies and the soft boiled egg. The chashu is a bit thin, but it was perfectly marinaded and grilled with perfect fat and lean ratio. The surprising part was, even the soft boiled egg was marinaded to the core with a light soy sauce blend. It was super tasty.
I decided to take a take out order of Chicken Katsu Curry to go and see how good is their fried food and curry. The chicken was deep fried to perfection, but the curry was just OK for me, standard Japanese veggie curry, but the soft omelette on top of the rice was a big surprised to me. I have never seen it served this way in any of the joints that I visited in the US. That omelette is a big plus, because it goes so well with the curry.
I didn’t get the chance to try any Sushi and the Poke bowls but I will surely stop by here again to see how the rest of the menu compare.
I ordered the Bang Bang Chicken, but it was far from fresh. It was so dry it felt like eating chicken jerky and the green onions on top were withered like dried herbs. To make matters worse, about a third of the dish consisted of empty fried batter with no chicken inside, pieces that should have been thrown away.
It honestly felt like they had just re-fried someone else’s leftovers.
As for the Miso Ramen, it tasted like plain hot water at first. I eventually found a clump of undissolved miso at the bottom, meaning it wasn’t even stirred properly. I might understand if the place was busy, but we were the only customers there.
We wanted to complain, but we had a flight to catch and didn’t have the time.
The Mille Crepe tasted like a frozen dessert and was tiny for the $6 price.
The only saving grace was the Tonkotsu Ramen, which was okay (though not exactly authentic).
It’s a shame because I was excited to try this place.
If you’re looking for a place with great service, good vibes, and thoughtful staff, this is it. Thank you for making my solo date feel like a celebration ✨
The service is just as impressive. The staff is friendly, attentive, and quick without making you feel rushed. They genuinely make you feel welcome from the moment you walk in.
If you’re in Jackson and want great food with excellent service, House of Umami is the spot. It’s easily one of the best places to eat in town.
