Our friend treated us at this authentic Chinese restaurant. This is also my first meal in Ann Arbor.
Highly recommend their signature spicy grilled fish. It tasted amazing with a lovely spicy broth and fresh vegetables. We added bamboo shots and Udon noodles, which improved the taste. Free rice was given with the entree, but rice refill cost extra. The dry pot frog was not as good as the fish, but the potatoes and lotus roots tasted great. Service was great. The room was clean. The spicy fish entree saved my day at this freezing weather.

Very welcoming experience with the Christmas cheer fully apparent! I really enjoyed the chicken fried rice! Definitely recommend if you enjoy Chinese food and are visiting Ann Arbor

I have been going there since it was still called Gourmet (?) in the 90s. Now I still go there with my family and friends. All
of us found the dishes we ordered to be very good, esp the crispy Peking duck. Their tofu dish, shrimp fried rice, beef teriyaki, fried noodles with mixed veggies and seafoods, my favorite sesame balls, eggplant dishes and the hot and sour soup are all very good. Will certainly eat there again. I think it is the best Chinese resto now here in Ann Arbor after Michigan Lake closed down.

I got homestyle tofu which was excellent and sautéed string beans which were also excellent- the sauce was spicy and savory! The service was very slow though- I got there at the time they said my order would be ready for carry out but I had to wait another at least 16- 20 minutes to get my food. They use- like most Chinese restaurants- black plastic carry out containers which are now being found to possibly contain toxic substances so that makes me unhappy. I would get carry out much more often if they still used the old traditional cardboard carry out containers!

5 Stars for sure! If you looking for Hot Pot (This one not the one that you cook by your self) I recommend here. They have couples to choose from if single pot they have Beef, Frog legs (my favorite), not sure for chicken you can choose soup or dry hot pot spicy or not and Fish hotpot is the one you can pick individual things to add to your pot and pick your soup base then they will cook up in the back then bring the giant hot pot to your table.
This time we order whole duck with 2 style make sure to order 2 style so basically you will get the meat part to wrap and eat with sauce and what ever meat that left from slice with the bone they will sautéed with salt and pepper to serve which is really good as well. I been to Hot Pot Chen many times but I think this time they have new server I forget to ask his name he explain and help us with the menu a lot.
Overall this last visit is amazing great food good service! ☺️ ✨

We ordered the roasted fish pot (pickled mustard flavor), stir fried cabbage, Sichuan pepper chicken, dry pot frog legs, and the brown sugar mochi. Everything was flavorful and well presented! Definitely underrated:3

While the atmosphere was certainly interesting, it was nothing special. The service and food didn’t measure up. Now I’m a big fan of chinese food and while I’m no expert… In this reviewers humble opinion, this restaurant was not worth the visit. The service was not bad it just felt like our server was going through the paces. The food… what can I say other than unsatisfying? The eggplant in my wife’s dish was served with the skin on it, and while pretty to look at was inedible, and she spent half our time we were there scraping the flesh from the skin to eat it, this dish was her third choice as they were out of her first and second selections as well as our appatiser; vegitable dumplings. My dish: almond boneless chicken, a Chinese restaurant staple! Where to start… the chicken was mostly tough, two pieces couldn’t be cut through, and the gravy had a thick skin on it and was almost void of flavor . Unfortunately, I would not return for another experience.

I had good service this evening at Hot Pot Chen on Stadium Boulevard in Ann Arbor. The waitress mixed our sesame noodles appetizer right at the table, for us. And at the end of the meal, she boxed up all of the leftover food without spilling a morsel. I appreciate that. In between we enjoyed good food and conversation in one of the most beautiful dining rooms outside of the downtown area. I love the pan-fried string beans, the sizzling teriyaki chicken, and the twice cooked pork. I’ll be back to try more.

The food is good but the service is outrageously horrible. Every time we come but especially tonight. We came in, no one acknowledged us, we had to ask three times for a table for 3. She said “we don’t have a table for you” I asked when one would be available. She said maybe in 45 mins. In the meantime we ordered food to go online to take home. It said it would be ready at 7:19pm. at 7:30pm we get to the front of the carry out line to be told it will be at least another 20 mins. Why? We have a lot of orders. No, sorry about that. It’s so hard since the food is good but I can no longer justify giving my money to a place that has such horrible, horrible service and such a lack of customer service.

Could not have been more delicious!!! Scallion pancake, triple special earthen pot and Mongolian beef were all amazing and flavorful. The best part, for two people these were big enough to create a second meal. Please don’t notice how I ungracefully ate more than half the scallion pancake before rembering to take pictures.
