Excellent! Had a late lunch w friends and enjoyed EVERY bite. Chicken sandwich, New England nachos, hot belly, crispy mushrooms, chips, fries – nothing disappointed. Loved the bowls before now @HotMessNC has upped their game.

Edit: Save room for the Dole Whip! We shared and there was more than enough to top off our wonderful meal.

@HotMessNC – You are welcome to use the photos.

My wife and I were excited to finally be able to visit one of our favorite restaurants (formerly Davidson Icehouse), and check out the new concept. We both ordered custom bowls, and they were great. If you enjoyed the bowls at Davidson Icehouse, you will enjoy these as well. They have some new toppings and dressings, and they were all great! We had great service – our food came out fairly quick. They were even gracious enough to let us try the Dole Whip, and it was delicious.

The changes made to the inside, while subtle, created a pretty unique and cool environment while still maintaining the character of the historic building.

We are looking forward to coming back and checking out the other items on the menu!

I met my teen daughter and her friend at Hot Mess on opening day. The restaurant is refreshingly eclectic with a fun vibe. I saw lots of patrons taking photos. My daughter and I built our own bowls and her friend had a burger and fries. We also had a basket of the Street Taco fries. Friend had a perfect burger right to his specifications. Both the burger and fries were delivered perfectly hot. The Street Taco spice with the fries was yummy.
Our bowls were ah-mazing. I was happy to see the spicy green sauce is still around. The charred broccoli was SO good. I can’t wait to go back.

To Chef Jen & team:

I sincerely applaud your efforts to expand your menu beyond the tried-and-true bowls with such tasty-sounding menu items like cheese-smothered burgers, street taco fries, and hot chicken sandwiches. I have high hopes for what Hot Mess can be.

With that said, the execution was just not there in my two visits to your restaurant. Below are a few missteps I experienced:
– The “make it a mess” burger was missing the “mess”
– The hot mess chicken sandwich was missing spice. I’m pretty sure I just received a normal chicken sandwich.
– The street taco fries were missing the Baja ranch sauce. The fries also seemed to be sorely lacking in seasoning, with the top layer of fries lightly seasoned and the bottom layer almost entirely missing seasoning. This was especially disappointing since the seasoning is an up charge.
– We were offered Dole whip as a gesture of goodwill given the slow service on opening day, but never received it.

I have confidence that issues like these will be ironed out in time, but I have a hard time recommending that others give this spot a try in its current form. I will give it another shot in a few months and hope to change this to a 5 star review then!

My wife and I were really excited to try this place because we used to frequent Ice House. We saw the reviews, but didn’t want them to be true. If this place goes under, its gonna be because the poor kids working there have no clue of what they’re doing. I ordered the hot chicken sandwich and was brought the wrong food twice. The first time they brought chicken tenders. The second time they brought the wrong sandwich. I asked the young lady who brought the food if this was the hot chicken sandwich and she said “I don’t know. There were 2 sandwiches back there and I just brought the one for this ticket.” I bit into it and sure enough it was the wrong one. Not only that, but the chicken had 0 seasoning and the batter wasn’t fried all the way which made for a really gooey mushy mess. I don’t like sending food back and our server was very lost and frazzled already and I didn’t want to make things worse for her. So I just cut my losses and trashed the sandwich. Cmon guys…fry your batter, season your chicken, and know what you are bringing to your tables.

Trying to be kind, but this place isn’t ready for customers. The counter workers had no clue about the items on their menu, so we crossed our fingers and hoped for the best. We ordered fries with our sandwiches, but when the food came there were no fries, just chips. We asked the food runner to grab some fries, but he stated they were out of fries and could get us something else, but he didn’t know what options were available. We stuck with the chips. My 7 year old son’s chicken sandwich came out 10 minutes after my burger and my wife’s chicken sandwich, and it was completely raw inside. My son took a big bite and said it tasted weird, so my wife cut it in half to make sure it was cooked, and when she did, the inside was pink and mushy. I took it to the counter to let them know, and I requested that it be removed from the bill, but the girl said there was no one available to take it off the bill, but that she would remove it as soon as there was someone available. I asked if there was a manager there, not because I felt the need to complain, but because the workers were struggling in the front and back of the house. She said there was a manager there, but I could tell she lacked confidence in this person, so I passed on speaking with them. I didn’t want to make her or the staff more uncomfortable than they already were. They did offer to make my son another sandwich, but he said he’d rather eat something at home. The staff were friendly, but they are lacking knowledge, and I blame that on management. I’d recommend closing for a week or two to retrain staff, including management. I don’t see this place surviving if these issues aren’t corrected as soon as possible.

I was looking forward to having a restaurant back in the old Ice House location; unfortunately, our recent lunch experience there was disappointing. My husband and I both ordered the lobster roll. When they arrived at the table, the first thing we noticed was the scant amount of lobster salad on the bread. The roll was six inches long, but the filling covered only four of the six inches and it was thinly spread. (Traditional lobster rolls are generally overflowing with lobster.) Worse, the meager amount of lobster salad in the roll was lacking in flavor and seasoning. The sandwiches were a poor value at $24.99 each.

Drink choices at lunch were also lacking. Canned sodas were the only options offered.

Not worth the price. I’ll start off by saying none of our food was bad…it just also wasn’t good. We ordered a double smash burger with fries and a sweet tea and a classic lobster rolls with chips and a can of sprite.
1. Sweet tea is self serve but there is no ice in sight. We had to wait for the runner to bring us our food in which we asked for ice. But the sweet tea was so not sweet that the ice basically turned it into just unsweetened tea.
2. Burger was good but it wasn’t a smash burger. It was a normal size and thickness patty. Could’ve been the fault of whoever was cooking but it definitely wasn’t what you would consider to even be remotely a smash burger.
3. Maybe this was my bad and I should’ve asked but when I see house made chips on a menu my assumption is that they’re fresh and hot. Mine were definitely made earlier in the day and room temperature.
4. I grew up in Maine, I know what a good lobster roll is. What they got is not it. Bun is massive and not a new england style role or grilled like lobster roll buns are supposed to be. And never in my life have I had lobster with so little flavor. Lobster rolls are supposed to be simple: lobster, little mayo, maybe some salt/pepper/paprika, but the point is that lobster has such a nice distinct flavor that you don’t need more. The lobster they served literally tasted like nothing. My guess is they aren’t using fresh lobster from New England and that it’s been frozen for a long time. For $25 I’m expecting a good sandwich.
Again, I can’t say our food was bad it was meh but I won’t be eating here again for the price and quality. I’m not stingy but if I’m paying $50+ for lunch, it better be a delicious meal.

This place is appropriately named as it is A HOT MESS‼️
An early lunch(11:15am) and the wait began when we walked in the door! The place opened at 11:00am and the ONLY counter person was taking a phone order. I lost count of the number of times she told us she’d be with us in a minute.
Ice was not readily available. One had to ask for that. Salt & pepper were not on the table. We were told, as our food was FINALLY delivered to the table, we could go up front and ask for it, they had it there and no, I can’t bring it to you.
The food was mediocre at best and I’m being generous here! Dry, flavorless, uninspired and pricy for what it was. When our party was approached by a staff member inquiring of our experience, we shared our truth with kindness. Every excuse in the book was offered: short staffed, just opened, roadblocks with equipment installation, scope of employee duties(delivery of salt and pepper NOT among them), etc……we heard it ALL! None of that should be the guests’ problem! Lots of luck to you Hot Mess! You’re going to need it. Four who gave you our $$$$ and a try today will not be back.

Ate there yesterday. And honestly not impressed. We both had a salad and I am only speaking for myself. First let me say that all the vegetables in my salad were fresh, got to give you that. But, my salad was just bland and boring. The fried chicken had absolutely no flavor, or seasoning. I rarely use salt on anything and cook with it sparingly. I continually had to add both salt and pepper to be able to eat it, the dressing was herb ranch. Not very flavorful. I am also not a big fan of getting my water from a container in the dining room. No ice was available to fill my glass with. There was ice in the container but not available to us. Plus I didn’t like seeing the container being filled with a bucket. Unfortunately I am a one and done person, sorry Hot Mess.
