Reviews
What stood out the most was the philosophy behind the food. You can really taste the quality of the ingredients, and knowing that most of them come from local producers around the Milan area makes the dishes feel even more thoughtful. Everything felt very seasonal, clean and well balanced.
The presentation of the dishes was beautiful but still natural – nothing felt forced or overcomplicated. Each course had its own character and the flavors were incredibly precise.
Service was also excellent: attentive, knowledgeable and very relaxed. The staff took their time to explain the dishes and made the whole evening feel special without being stiff.
Overall, definitely one of the most memorable dining experiences I’ve had in Milan. If you appreciate modern fine dining with a strong focus on sustainability and high-quality ingredients, Horto is absolutely worth visiting.
The food was completely on point from start to finish. Every single dish that came out was not only beautiful to look at but packed with incredibly balanced and innovative flavors. You could really tell they care about using the best ingredients. What truly tied the whole night together, though, was the service. The staff was genuinely great—warm, attentive, and always there when we needed them, without ever making us feel rushed or hovered over.
The concept of the place is a bit unusual: “bio food,” minimalism, and supposedly farm-grown ingredients. They don’t serve alcohol in the morning, which felt strange, especially since it was almost 11 a.m. and we only asked for a glass of prosecco for the celebration. They refused, even though the bar was fully stocked.
They did treat us to a small birthday cake, which was a nice touch, but our waiter seemed rather unfriendly and indifferent. Maybe the atmosphere is better in the evening, but for breakfast I wouldn’t recommend it.
The bill for three people was €70.
Unfortunately the service was a big miss –
1. Upon arrival, we asked to be seated outside, to which they said no as all the tables were supposedly booked – only none of them got filled for the rest of the night and no offer was made to change our table, which started our night on a poor note (they said they had last minute cancellations, though it’s a bit odd for that to be the case for every table)
2. It took 2 hours for us to receive our first course (we arrived at 8 PM and received our first course at ~9.40 PM), and we weren’t given any warning or heads up as to the timing. While we understand fine dining is meant to be leisurely, this was a bit much and we should’ve been informed at the start so we knew what to expect (we ended up leaving at midnight)
3. There was a piece of plastic in my dessert that I luckily noticed before taking a bite and they were able to replace – the staff apologised and compensated my drinks for the night, but it was still a miss for a place of this calibre (and undoubtedly a health and safety concern).
The manager of the night, Oscar, was lovely and took as best care of us as he could, even contacting me after the dinner to apologise for our experience (which is why I’ve given them 2 stars for service).
All in all, we loved the food and the ambiance, though there definitely need to be improvements to its service levels to ensure the meal is worth it.
Lorenzo was our waiter and he went above and beyond. Our group had some dietary restrictions and he accommodated on the fly as well as giving an attention to detail I rarely have experienced. He recommended other local cuisines for us to try as well as giving us in depth explanations of the fermentation and produce sourcing that Horto follows. He absolutely helped make this meal truly special and would not have been the same without him.
I also want to call out Claudia who gave us her recommendations and was extremely attentive throughout the night.
Can’t recommend this place enough – especially for vegetarians. Bonus if you can sit at the chefs table. It truly made it special to see each course being prepped.
Recommended We will come back in summer to enjoy the fantastic roof top terrace
