tldr; They tried upcharging me $2 for my cocktail to use Makers Mark when I never asked for it and they charged my group an auto 20% gratuity when their menu stated it would be 18% for a group of 6.
Their excuses were that Makers Mark was standard for that cocktail (it was not written that way on the menu, the menu clearly stated that Makers Mark was an extra +$2 which implied you would have to ask for it, not that they used Makers Mark as the default liquor) and that their physical menus were outdated and they auto charged 20% gratuity to all “large” groups. I added 1 star back to this review because they fixed the receipt and honored what was written on the menus we were given, and the food was delicious. I’m disappointed the dinner ended the way it did.
I went last week with my family and we were a group of 6. When seated, they handed us physical menus. They only gave us a QR code menu when we asked about the drinks menu as it was not listed in the physical menu.
The physical menus have a disclaimer at the bottom that states groups of 6 or more will be charged an auto 18% gratuity fee and groups of 10 or more will be charged 20%. That’s fine, and normal, we had no issues with that.
I ordered a cocktail that had the words “+$2 for Makers Mark” next to it, which to me implied that I could pay $2 more to substitute the liquor they usually use with Makers Mark. I’m not a fan of MM so I didn’t request it.
At the end of the meal, we requested the check and I double checked it as we had ordered a lot of items (almost $400+). That is when I noticed the +$2 charge to my cocktail and a 20% auto gratuity instead of the 18% listed on the menu. I asked our server for clarification and that is when they tell me that Makers Mark is the automatic alcohol used for the cocktail I ordered and that the menus we were given were outdated and all large groups are charged 20% auto gratuity. This upset me because it is such a shady thing to do. I can’t imagine how many people just pay their bills without checking. While it may have only been a few extra dollars to our total bill, all those little additions compound.
Thankfully they didn’t try to argue with me on this and fixed the bill so I wasn’t charged the +$2 and the auto gratuity was changed to 18%.
While this experience left a sour taste in my mouth, I will probably end up going back again in the future as their food is really top quality and they give generous portions. Just make sure to check your receipts before you pay.
The menu is decent, not overwhelming, bunch of appetizers, sushi rolls and few other entrees. Among appetizers, grilled calamari was good, jumbo scallops, miso soup and eggplant were excellent. The Tokyo roll was amazing, but Godzilla and Montgomery rolls were okay for me. My friend loves their tuna tar tar. The katsu don were nice fulfilling dish as well.
Service is good. Food in prepared in a decent time. Sushi rolls are colorful and presented nicely. But for the price, it is not as extravagant as upscale Japanese restaurant.
Cons: the reception lady is always unfriendly. Never says hi. lol
The servers aren’t that nice or welcoming either.
Omakase size is a mini size.
Pros: neighborhood
Taste was mid for a neighborhood quality.
The a la carte sushi was on point. Everything tasted fresh and clean, with a good mix of the basics like tuna, salmon, and yellowtail, plus more unique cuts like uni, botan ebi, king salmon, and Hokkaido scallop. The uni from Maine was perfectly chilled, sweet, and creamy. The botan ebi had a great briny flavor, and the clam was light with a subtle sweetness that surprised me.
If I had to nitpick, the salmon could be sliced a bit thicker, and I wish they used fresh wasabi root instead of the usual paste. Even so, the quality and pricing are very reasonable, especially for Jersey City.
Overall, Honshu is a great spot for sushi, and I would happily come back the next time I am in the area.
Again, today, the 10.09.2024 we went back for another dinner. It was another great experience to taste all the different absolutely delicious “Sushi” pieces. Than you!
