TL;DR:
Good food, kind staff, but a few mix-ups along the way. The shrimp fried rice and broccoli in oyster sauce were delicious, and the almond cookies were a nice surprise. However, the cashew shrimp missed the mark with literally, no cashews; and the automatic 10% gratuity caught me off guard. Still, I’d go back for the fried rice and broccoli, just with a bit more attention to detail next time.
Food: 4/5
The food overall was great, though not quite what I expected. The shrimp fried rice was made extra spicy with chili oil, a flavorful twist I didn’t see coming but really enjoyed. The broccoli in oyster sauce was fresh, aromatic, and perfectly cooked. The almond cookies and fortune were a sweet highlight. However, the cashew shrimp was a miss. There were no cashews at all, and the dish itself wasn’t prepared in the style I’ve had before. Because of that, I wouldn’t order it again, but I’d absolutely come back for the fried rice and broccoli.
Customer Service: 3/5
The staff was kind and polite over the phone when I placed my order and answered all my questions clearly. Pickup was quick and easy, which I appreciated. However, when I got home and realized the cashews were missing, I had to call back. They apologized but didn’t offer a solution beyond suggesting I still try the dish. While they were friendly, it would’ve been nice to see a bit more accountability or an offer to make it right.
Ambiance: 3/5
This is a classic takeout spot: simple, straightforward, and designed for efficiency rather than atmosphere. There’s nothing fancy about it, but they’re quick with orders, especially if you call ahead. For what it is, it serves its purpose well.
Special Note:
After checking my receipt, I noticed an automatic 10% gratuity was already added to my total which was something I didn’t realize until after I had also tipped another 10% at pickup. So I ended up tipping 20%, which isn’t typical for takeout. Just a heads-up for anyone ordering, double-check your receipt before adding an extra tip. Also, there were no utensils included in the bag, so make sure you grab some if you need them.
Overall:
Hong’s Chop Suey has solid food, kind people, and quick service, just a few small misses that, with some extra care, could easily be improved. I’d return for the fried rice and broccoli any day, and hopefully next time, the cashew shrimp comes with, well… cashews.
Not to mention, your pineapple chicken is nothing but sweet and sour sauce with about 3 pineapple chunks dropped in.
Naw I’m good. I’ll learn how to make my own Chinese food.
Our food was fantastic. I can truly say that we enjoyed our dinner.
Although I would imagine because it was the holiday, it took us 1 hour to order and receive our food. When we ate dinner, it was well worth the wait
They had a young child maybe between 8-10 years old in the back area handling the cooked food. The child was eating a cookie in one hand and touching the food with the other. Another child was there, a little girl at the table behind the counter adjacent to the cooked open food on a lap top. She was coughing with mouth open and no mask. The cough was consistent.
After the young boy partially finished handling the open food, he wa going back and forth touching different food, he then went over to the fryer to put the battered chicken wing from the batter to the hot oil to cook. He never washed his hands from eating the cooking. He was also eating the cookie right over/around the cooked food.
This was too unsanitary for me. I left without ordering and vowed to NEVER go back. I will drive the extra 15-20 mins to the Chinese in Hazel Crest.
The food was clearly not fresh. The Shrimp was dry and tough, as if it had been sitting out for a long time, and the vegetables were limp and lacked any crispness. The most frustrating part was that everything was lukewarm at best; none of the dishes were hot, which made the already poor quality even worse.
I was expecting a satisfying, fresh meal, but instead, I got something that felt like leftovers. Based on this experience, I absolutely would not recommend this place to anyone.
