However, about halfway through my meal, I saw something out of the corner of my eye. I looked over and, for the first time ever, I saw a German cockroach in Washington state. It was about 2 feet away from me, on the wall. I just kinda froze for a minute and didn’t know what to say or do, but was immediately grossed out.
One thing I know about cockroaches is it’s not common to see them out in the light. A quick search confirms this: “If you are seeing German cockroaches during daylight hours, it is a strong indicator of a significant infestation, as they only come out during the day when their hiding spots are overcrowded.”
This restaurant clearly has a pest problem, which is bad enough as it is, but I handled it pretty well. I called the server over and pointed it out to him. He immediately deflected and said it ‘must have flown in when [he] opened the door.’ He looked at it a moment, grabbed one of the napkins from my table and asked if he should get it. Mind you he was on my left across the table, and the roach was on the wall opposite him a couple feet from my right shoulder.
I wasn’t really thrilled about him reaching across my food and myself to try and ‘get it’ with the napkin so I said, ‘No thanks, I’d rather you don’t.’ He stepped away for a minute or two, then came back and said, ‘I’m just going to get this’. He then proceeded, napkin in hand, to do exactly what I asked him not to – he reach over the table, across my food, and then proceeded to grab at the roach, wiping it across the wall toward him, then – realizing it was still trying to get away – pinned it against the table. All of this in front of me while I’m halfway through my meal.
DURING this whole thing, while he’s smearing roach across the nearby wall and table, another server comes up and drops off my check and walks away.
I picked at a couple more bites of my food, but was so nauseated and grossed out from this experience, I left the rest of my food there and went to pay. I didn’t fuss or make a scene, maybe I should have but it’s not how I am. They said nothing more and did nothing about the check as the same person who wiped roach across my table rang me up and happily accepted payment for my meal.
Otherwise they were friendly enough, but this was one of the grossest eating experiences I’ve ever had. I will never eat here again and though I don’t often leave reviews, I feel like this should be shared so other people can make an informed decision about where they choose to spend their money.
The staff members are awesome! It was the same enjoyable experience that I remember way back when! I will – for sure – be back! 🙂
We both loved our meals and loved the egg drop soup we were given right away.
Of what we ordered my favorite was the general tso chicken. It was very crisp. We got 8/10 spicy which I liked.
Hot and sour soup was pretty good. Lots of veggies in it which was tasty though different.
Crab Rangoon were pretty good. My wife got Mongolian beef which was too sweet for her.
We also noticed an old Sue Kidd sticker. I’m curious to see her review. We’ll be back to try more menu items.
I called in for takeout (which btw, you don’t get the soup if you do). It was the personal meal that included Barbecue Pork, sweet and sour chicken, spring rolls, and fried shrimp. At my request, they did replace the spring rolls, with pot stickers, which I appreciated.
I ordered the food and showed up 5 minutes later. When I arrived, it was ready. I’m not sure how to feel about that. But as it didn’t taste like re-heated food, I guess it’s good that it was fast.
When I checked the order, I noticed that there was no rice. Now the order was $26 and I also included a tip. But when I asked the waitress about the fact that it had no rice she said, “didn’t you read the menu?” I told her, I have ALWAYS had meals at Chinese restaurants where the rice is just a given. So I asked to talk to the manager. The manager didn’t seem happy that I was questioning this. She said that if I want rice I would need to pay for it. At first she said it was like $15, but that was for a full container. I asked how much for one of those SMALL containers, and she said that it would be $3.86, which I passed on.
Now most people probably could care less, but if I’m spending $30 for food, why would you want to be cheap just to save what probably cost you, $0.05? Also, the sauces that they provided for my pot stickers, seemed to be watered down.
My issue is that for years, I did marketing and advertising for businesses. Some were Restaurants. It never made sense to me that some owners (mostly foreigners) try to be so cheap. They would pay for advertising to bring in a new customer, but then penny pinch them for things that cost very little!
Yes, they saved five cents by not just saying, “we’re sorry but rice is always separate. We will go ahead and get you some this time”. But instead, they lost a return customer. They lost me bringing back others. They lost those individuals return business, as well as any others they may have referred.
I don’t get their cheap mentality! When you are feeding a customer and you are not providing it at a super low price, just offer whatever, to make their experience good. If they don’t request, extra sauces, rice, soda, or anything else that costs you less than $0.25 don’t OFFER it. But if they do ask, let it go, just give the customer what they are asking for, because they will keep coming back.
Summation- food was good, not so sure about the value. No understanding of how to treat a customer. The dipping sauce was horrific. There are other places where the owners want you to walk away satisfied. I try to frequent those establishments.
