After searching for somewhere to celebrate Lunar New Year, I saw Hong Kong Dragon pop up. I was immediately drawn to their menu, and when I came in I knew it was the best choice. My first reaction when I sat down with the service was WOW. It was welcoming, attentive, and everything I’ve looked for in restaurants.
The food was amazing. General Gao platter had best sauce ever. The soup and shumai were so well seasoned. Can’t wait to come back!

While I have been going to Hong Kong Dragon for virtually my entire life and have many fond memories of ordering takeout from there, I’ve noticed lately—and quite sadly, that the quality has declined considerably. It pains me to say this, but based upon a few decisive, and more importantly in the restaurant world, but recent–experiences, the Hong Kong Dragon may no longer be my go-to.
First, the menu and presentation have changed in ways that don’t work well. When ordering what appears to be a combo (for example, General Tso’s chicken with pork fried rice), the food now comes packed in a small tray. Additionally, the chicken portion consisted of only four or five pieces, some of which were uncomfortably large. The chicken was heavily doused in sauce and seemed undercooked, while the rice itself was bland and lacking flavor. The use of a lunch-tray style container also detracts from the overall appeal and presentation of the dish.
Second, if you instead order General Tso’s chicken and pork fried rice separately, you receive an enormous quantity of food—far more than is reasonable or healthy to consume at once, and at a cost exceeding $25. Pork lo mein, which I’ve ordered multiple times, has been watery and similar to the rice, lacking in flavor. In sum, the General Tso’s chicken tends to be overly battered, and the accompanying sides have at times had an unpleasant aroma along with a sticky, stringy texture.
That said, I think I’ve had enough Hong Kong Dragon for a while. Sure, it has been that one restaurant which has been synonymous with Chinese food when I do wish to order that kind, but presently there are some important concerns which need be addressed. Because if this kind of experience becomes a collective trend, then that could have a profound effect on its reputation, and thus survival.

Always on target for what you order! Always Fresh and hot: house fried rice kills (skip the pork fried rice-too much soy sauce); Egg rolls perfect; boneless spare ribs have minimal fat; Peking raviolis with ginger sauce are great; general tso chicken, order extra chili oil on side if you like it real spicy; beef teriyaki seasoned perfectly; lobster sauce, good deal, best hot and sour soup, skip the chicken noodle. Just enjoy trying new things! They do good food!

Hong Kong Dragon has become me and Gretchen’s (fiancé) go-to spot, and for good reason. The food is consistently fresh and flavorful, but what really makes this place special is the people. The staff are welcoming, attentive, and genuinely kind, which makes every visit feel like more than just a meal. Out of all the restaurants in Winthrop, this is my favorite.

Stopped in for a few Bourbons while I waited for my wife to finish an appointment. I was a little hungry, so I got an order of fries. They were almost the best french fries I’ve had at any restaurant ever! I like to stop in for a drink because it is quiet in the afternoon, and the gentleman who was serving me was very friendly and talkative. He asked if I wanted to watch anything special on TV. A couple came in and sat at a table across from me. Their food smelled delicious when it came out. My wife and I plan on eating there next month when she has another appointment. There is plenty of street parking available which is always nice.

More Asian, not just Hong Kong/Chinese. We had their hot and sour soup and a house special with green beans and pork. Great food and service. Good wine at a decent price. Couldn’t ask for better when you need a Chinese/Asian food fix. Family owned and operated. Lots of locals eating an early dinner there.

I called at 5:55 PM to order delivery. I was quoted roughly 35 minutes and I understand that sometimes things can get busy and it may take a little bit longer, but the food did not come for an hour and five minutes and I live three streets away. I would’ve picked it up myself, but I have a three year-old with the flu. I called about 40 minutes in and was told maybe another 10 minutes but clearly that was not the case. I just think you need to do better at providing estimate estimated times. If I knew it would take over an hour I would have ordered from somewhere else, and then the food arrived lukewarm.
