Reviews
They have had their high points and low points during that time period.
Their highest point was from 2011 to 2014. This 3 year period, they had a very talented Head Sushi Chef. They had innovative and delicious sushi, creative, and tasty bar drinks, and their staff was amongst the best in the area.
I love coming during all the seasons, but especially during the winter season when they have their fireplace on.
Haven’t been there since COVID, but all my photos are from my decade of frequenting this restaurant.
Here are my recommendations:
Appetizers:
Negimaki
Fried Oysters
Tempura
Uni Spoon
Specialty Rolls:
Chestnuthill
Farmer’s
Spicy Love
King Kong
No Name
Kitchen Food:
Salmon Teriyaki
Hamachi Kama (when they have it)
Dessert:
Literally, any of their ice cream cakes
Mochi
Green Tea Tempura Ice Cream (yes, you heard correctly, fried Ice cream. Also available in vanilla)
Need to come back to Hokka to see how it has come along post-covid.
We tried their special CHIRASHI BOWL, Yaki Vegetable Udon noodles and veggie rolls. Overall the taste and service was good, but nothing special. So I think they are overpriced.
The sashimi in the Chirashi Bowl was fresh but lacked flavor. It was as if the ingredients were placed in a bowl and served. They need to add some flavor/spice if this is their ‘special’ plate. Also the veggie rolls were bland.
The ambience was nice. The music choice was bad. I prefer eastern instrumental music played in a sushi restaurant, definitely not pop music.
They need improvement to deserve the additional star, just 4/5 now.
i looked at the google reviews before me and my boyfriend went and since it has 4+ stars reviews we decided to go to the place. pretty cute atmosphere and nice staff, HOWEVER i feel like we got fooled by the outside. i’m a noodle lover and had so many udon dishes before, but the tempura udon i got was very bland and tasted like water down. i take the texture of the noodles seriously and it felt it was overdone and mushy. tempura was okay, they had broccoli tempura which i thought it was interesting.
the question is…. why is my review only gives one star ?!?!??
my boyfriend ordered chicken teriyaki AND I HONESTLY FELT DISRESPECTED TO ASIAN CULTURE. everything on that plate looked like a frozen food that has been microwave, unseasoned just boiled broccoli, dry and hard brown rice, chicken that the sauce was just poured on top ……. sorry but this is honestly embarrassing can believe this dish was TWENTY DOLLARS.
We had their bento box lunches and they were absolutely delicious and big in portion. In particular the Beef Negimaki Teriyaki bento were sooo good. The beef is wrapped into the shape of a sushi with some vegetable and sauce inside. It was so tender and juicy. We were absolutely blown away with this dish! Our regret of the trip to Philadelphia is that we did not get a chance to return back to this restaurant to have this bento again!
The other bento was a salmon teriyaki bento. It was equally good, a very well pan fried salmon, crispy skin and soft tender interior.
Great great Japanese restaurant. Highly recommended!
