Nestled just 20 miles from New York City at the corner of East Franklin Turnpike and Sheridan Avenue, it housed members of the area’s founding family: the Zabriskies. The structure is believed to have been built in the 1790s and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Today, the Ho-Ho-Kus (an abbreviation of a tribal term for “red cedar”) Inn & Tavern builds on its rich history, focusing on making it more casual. Modern infrastructure and amenities were interwoven through the establishment to comply with historical regulations.

My partner, our friends, and I decided to have dinner last night as first-timers. Reservation was easily made via OpenTable for 5.

Upon entering this spot for local and farm-fresh dining, we were greeted by the staff at the host station inside a cozy, multiple-story dining setup to host semi-private dining experiences in a multitude of quaint rooms and two bars. Our table was ready by the window at the Hermitage Room.

The menu focused on simple, seasonal, and modern American cuisine. From starters, we decided on the Fiddlehead Salad, Calamari, Dozen Blue Point Oysters, and Tuna Tartare. As a main meal, we opted for Veal Cheesesteak Sandwich, Pan-Seared Black Bass, Diver Sea Scallops, Zabriskie Burger, and Crispy Long Island Duck Breast. Complimentary rolls with whipped butter started our meal.

All dishes were prepared with fresh ingredients, care, and attention to detail. Each plate had its unique taste and was delicious. There was a small hiccup with one of the dishes ordered, and our server, Sebastian, fixed it. The staff was attentive, friendly, and accommodating. The price was comparable to the area.

Each dining room had its own personality, and we enjoyed our dinner experience here, which we can recommend.

We had dinner at the Ho Ho Kus Inn for Thanksgiving and it was Horrible. Dinner was $75 for 3 Course Price Fixe menu. Every part of the meal was terrible except for the roll. The Soup was supposed to be butternut squash but was completely flavorless and was thick and gloppy and was served cold, not even the slightest bit warm, second course we ordered Brie in puff pastry with peaches, there wasn’t a single peach on the plate, it too was flavorless, it was also served ice cold with a smear of what tasted like plain pumpkin from a can with absolutely no seasoning, it was inedible and the piece of Brie that was inside the pastry was the size of a sugar cube, I’ve never had Brie in puff pastry that I didn’t enjoy until today, for dinner we ordered the Turkey and were served 2 nice size pieces of Turkey which was dry and cold, the sweet potatoes were good but also cold and the string beans were cooked well and were the star of the plate, the stuffing was just soggy mushy glue and tasted like stove top. For dessert we all ordered the pumpkin cheesecake which they served to all of us completely frozen, not chilled but frozen solid like a rock. I don’t know how the food could have been worse. The quality of the food was terrible and our table was very disappointed. This was definitely our last visit to the Ho Ho Kus Inn. Did anyone in the kitchen bother tasting the dishes that they were serving to the customers? Or bother to check the temperature of the food that was being served? The servers were nice but seemed very overwhelmed. I’m sure they were busy dealing with all of the customers complaints from the dreadful dinner that they were serving throughout the night.

The Mojo de Ajo Shrimp appetizer was excellent—light, mildly sauced, and didn’t overpower the nicely grilled shrimp. We’d bump up the spice a bit for our taste, but it was still a standout.

The Fish Taco was just okay. The grilled mahi mahi got buried under too much coleslaw and pickled yellow peppers. The acid from the pickling overwhelmed the fish, which deserved more of a spotlight.

The Fried Chicken Sandwich hit the mark—well-balanced with a touch of heat. The bacon and prosciutto were smart additions that deepened the flavor.

The beer list was limited, but the highlight of the visit was the service. Danny, our server, was fantastic—personable, attentive, and offered great recommendations.

This place is really nice. The 1st floor feels both quaint and spacious at the same time.

The Thanksgiving dinner was chaotic, seated 45m after the reservation, one star star for that. Once seated the service was fine but by that the the place had emptied out.

The soup, salad, appetizers, and bread were all very nice but the main courses we tried (Turkey, Halibut) were both disappointing. Desert was decent, but was expecting apple pie as an option.

We hosted our 2025 corporate holiday dinner at the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn & Tavern in one of their private rooms for a group of about 25, and it was an absolutely wonderful experience from start to finish. We certainly will be back for future events.

Sara was a joy to work with in planning the event—responsive, thoughtful, and accommodating every step of the way. On the day of the dinner, the entire team ensured everything ran seamlessly, which allowed us to simply enjoy the evening and each other’s company.

The food was delicious, the service was attentive, and the atmosphere warm and inviting—everything you hope for in a gathering space. Highly recommend for any group event or special occasion!

As my kids would say, very “mid” place. $21 for 3 tiny meatballs with a cold piece of burrata is kinda offensive. Meatballs were dry and hard yay. But it’s a convenient location and the bar is good. Oh well.
