Waitress seeing my hijab left out the ham when telling me the ham and bean soup. She just said it was bean. She got my sides wrong, but meh straight out of a can mixed vegetables is better then potatoes I guess. Luckily though after asking I found out in time that catfish comes full bones and head. So I asked for a different type, so got frozen food isle cod.

HiWay Restaurant in Ottawa, IL is one of those classic local spots that truly delivers every single time. From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with a warm, friendly atmosphere that immediately makes you feel welcome. The staff is always attentive, courteous, and genuinely happy to see their customers, which really sets the tone for a great dining experience.

The food is consistently excellent. Everything is made fresh, portions are generous, and the flavors are exactly what you hope for from a hometown restaurant that’s been doing it right for years. Whether you’re stopping in for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, the menu has something for everyone. Their comfort food is especially outstanding — well-cooked, flavorful, and served hot. You can tell a lot of care goes into every dish that comes out of the kitchen.

What really stands out about HiWay Restaurant is how reliable they are. No matter how busy they are, the service stays fast and organized, and the food quality never slips. It’s the kind of place you can bring family, friends, or out-of-town guests and feel confident they’ll leave happy and full.

If you’re looking for a great local restaurant in Ottawa, Illinois with friendly service, fair prices, and consistently delicious food, HiWay Restaurant is absolutely worth the stop. It’s a true community staple and one of our go-to places whenever we want a satisfying meal and a welcoming environment. Highly recommended!

We have been patrons of this restaurant for over 10 years. They have the restaurant business figured out and nothing has changed in all of that time. Large menu with good specials, great soups and homemade pies, and the food always comes out extremely fast and very fresh/hot. I’ve had so many things on the menu and I’ve never had something I didn’t like. Some menu items I like better than others, but that’s of course to be expected. Service is fantastic and the place is always clean with clean restrooms. Excellent!

Also, Sunday mornings are busy. You won’t have a long wait but you might have a small one. Local favorite for Sunday morning breakfast.

Stopped here for breakfast recently. It was our first visit. Staff was friendly and attentive. Had a veggie omelette, hash browns and wheat toast. Although presentation showed yummy and a nice size portion. Dish turned out to be misleading. Omelette was a tad bit scorched and bland. Hash browns and wheat toast was cold. Thankful that tobasco sauce was on the table waiting.
Friends had breakfast bowls and had no real comment. We do plan to go back. Perhaps experience will be better.

Great service – We had 5 different people visit our table in the first 10 minutes of being there. Food is great, large portions and great value. We really enjoyed our meal. Met the owner who took a personal interest in us which was very nice

The food came out very quick! Fries are very crispy and you can tell that they put hard work into their food. This is a go to place after your hike day. I will be coming back here and recommending this place to others.

We stopped in on our way out of town because of all of the good reviews…:not sure we agreed with them. The hostess was very nice, the waitress not so much. But there was a good crowd there so we felt confident. Unfortunately the food came out and it was not great. The hollandaise sauce was like gelatin and the Gyro meat was like beef jerky. Not our favorite small town find.

I am a sucker for a good “four door” restaurant. (Family cars in the parking lot) Has a big menu, older building, appears to have been there a long time, and that would be likely because the service was great, food was delicious, prices are good, big portions! They have a large selection of cakes, and their tapioca pudding tastes amazing. I had the roast turkey dinner and my husband had the pork chop dinner and we both brought home half to eat later. Plan to go again when we’re down that way next.
