It was raining and I felt like having ramen. I’ve had ramen at popular places such as Tai Shoken nearby and wanted to try something new.

Went to Himawari. The ambience is interesting. To me, it seems almost like an old world Italian restaurant with LPs on the wall and old pictures. They also had classical jazz music in the background.

We ordered a side of Chicken Karaage, Tan Tan Men DX, Shio Butter Corn Ramen. Karaage was decent and juicy. We got no sauce/mayonnaise. Tan Tan Men DX was spiced appropriately. However, it was not at all rich in taste. Moreever, the boiled egg was cold – simply put they assembl led all the components without giving enough time to simmer. I’ve had better. Might be back once to give Himawari another try.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Absolutely Amazing Gluten-Free Ramen!

I can’t believe it took me five years of living here to discover himawari! As someone with celiac disease, finding gluten-free ramen that actually tastes authentic has always felt impossible — until now. I was honestly skeptical when I saw they offered gluten-free noodles, but I was blown away by how delicious everything was. The flavor, texture, and richness were all incredible — you’d never guess it was gluten-free!

It’s rare to find a place that caters to gluten-free noddles without sacrificing taste, and himawari truly nailed it. I’ve officially found my new happy place! I’ll definitely be coming back again and again to try all the other flavors.

I have mixed feelings about this restaurant. Some of the food was delicious and some of it was meh. There’s a lot of hype about the Ramen, but I have had much better. Maybe it just wasn’t for me. I also didn’t care for the gyoza, we actually had them take it back after trying it. It was really bad, maybe a bad batch. I thought they would take it off the bill, but didn’t. The shrimp and fried chicken were amazing and I recommend those. I will probably not return.

There’s something about Himawari that feels a bit tilted and imbalanced. This is a ramen place so let’s just talk about the ramen. The broth I think is solid. They did not skimp out on the quality or substance. The miso broth was creamy and structured. The shio broth was a bit more clear, but again, stood its ground. The butter corn ramen – which has to come across as silky smooth – however did not hit it out of the park, despite the fact that a lump of butter was dissolved into the broth. Something felt a bit to punchy for the buttery taste to form and I couldn’t put a pulse to it.

What Himawari falls apart though is the noodles. It almost feels like a somen and not a regular ramen texture. Especially with the butter corn ramen that goes for the buttery smoothness, you need a chewy texture with the noodles and that simply wasn’t the case.

At Himawari, each and every thing itself feels right. But they just don’t come together. And it’s tough to really say what that may be.

The interior is interesting with vinyl records as decor. A bit out of place but I guess it gets the job done. The service was fast. Nothing wrong there.

In any given city in the US, this ramen joint would’ve well received 4+ stars from me. But not here in the Bay Area. The competition is too high and you have some phenomenal places like Ramen Nagi that set the bar high. Himawari has potential. But it just doesn’t come through yet.

The ramen is good. I love the amount of meat I got, but I’m not a big fan of thick pork belly usually.

The service is a bit impersonal and could be improved.

Good selection of sake. Love the background music. Feel more elevated than usual music in other ramen places.

The ramen was very flavored and yummy!
They do have so many choices that it takes forever to decide. I picked the butter corn ramen with fried rice, but I wanted to try other ones, too! I think I should come back to try again.
The fried rice was okay. The meat was too dried and hard to chew I may not order it again.

I tried the ramen several years ago before the pandemic. There was a line to wait to get in and sometimes the wait was more than 1 hour. This time, literally there was not a single person waiting. When I tried the Ramen, the flavor was completely different. It could be the economy, but when the flavor is gone, same for the people…

Excellent traditional ramen. Our kids loved the butter corn miso, and enjoyed watching the ramen being made. The meat is slightly more tough than other ramen shops, especially the pork belly chunks, but there was no wait for lunch on Saturday, which is perfect for a family with kiddos, and the ambiance was nice: clean, sunny, with a jazzy feel to it. They had a high chair for my little one. If your kids need plastic plates / bowls, bring your own!

I ordered the Tan Tan Men and it was good! A decent price for what you get, but definitely not the best Tan Tan or spicy ramen I’ve had. What I appreciated the most about this restaurant was the theming and comfy atmosphere, and the fact that many menu items were accompanied by a drawing of the dish. It made sure you weren’t blind to what you were ordering, and that was certainly unique. A ramen place worth trying in downtown San Mateo. Overall, I might come again. 3/5.

We liked the vibes, service, and noodles! I got the miso chashu men and it came out promptly, but I would say it was okay – but the noodles themself were good enough to warrant another try of the restaurant but I’ll go with a different order. Seating is pretty packed in so conversations bled together; I bet it would be fun to come during a jazz night.
