It is a very unfortunate time when I have to give the Hilltop Steakhouse only 3 stars. This place used to be the place to go to get steak, it was a fun atmosphere and the food was always excellent. There used to be a line out the door and you would pretty much be hanging out with the cows out front. It just does not seem like they have kept up with the times, the food was mediocre with everything lacking a burst of flavor. They service for the most part has always been good, but occasionally you get that waitress that does not seem to want to be there. One thing you will never have a problem with, parking. I hope these not so great reviews get them to look at their business model and update it from 1950.

My husband and I were visiting from Arizona, we came here to eat. The food was great. We were also amazed with the butcher shop. The food was delicious, we had great service and wish I could have found a way to bring home some meat. We ended up eating here twice before we came home.

Oh, Hilltop, how far you have fallen. This restaurant is nothing but a shadow of its former self. There was a time when the wait was over two hours and people would wait. Now you’ll walk in and the only wait you have is the wait for the hostess to notice you. The food is just okay. Chances are the steaks will be subpar (the new owner doesn’t purchase the high quality meat anymore). The highlight of my very infrequent trips these days is their house dressing. The side salads got downsized recently and are pre-made so the lettuce ends up looking a bit wilted when it gets to you. The past few visits, the fries have been cold (but were quickly replaced with a fresh batch). Service is good. Many of the servers remember the old days and will reminisce with you. In the end I feel bad for the place. Around the time when indoor smoking bans rolled out, they installed a top-of-the-line ventilation system for their upstairs bar to keep all the smoke contained. Soon after, smoking ban passed and all the work was basically wasted. That’s pretty much where I remember things starting to go downhill.

Really pains me to write this review but I feel I must for the benefit of others who have so many fond memories of a restaurant that is a shadow of it’s former self. I hadn’t been back to Boston since 1994 and this place was on a must do list for me and my kids to visit. I told them how spectacular the food was and to be prepared to wait for an hour minimum to sit down. I was amazed to pull into a near empty parking lot and have immediate seating. After eating the meal it was apparent why , once a remarkable place with great memories has dwindled down to be a notch below a Logans or Texas Roadhouse. Those places are ok but no way near the caliber of Hilltop when it was in its prime. Now I would rather eat at those establishments and save a great deal of money. My kids were polite and told me they liked it but I could tell they were disappointed and expected much more. The food was totally non descript, nothing special, not bad not good. If you haven’t been there in a decade or so and want to revisit it for all the good memories, please don’t it really isn’t the same place anymore. I thought maybe it was just me but others on here appear to feel the same.

I was visiting the area to see friends and they took me to Hilltop. This was some awesome steak, I was hungry for real food. I got the Porterhouse (24oz – $24). I got the salad and mashed potatoes. The salad was HUGE, the mashed was awesome and the steak was cooked perfect. The rolls were excellent as was the iced tea and service.

i wonder how much hilltop pays its reviewers. I use to come her when i was 5.. in the 80’s this place was the best.. as of the last 10-15 years the original family lost control of of it and it went way down hill.. atmosphere is cool(brings back memories) but food has been awful for sometime now..

Tender cuts of meat but no frills. You can find better steaks for less money at chain places, but the old rustic decor hasn’t changed over the decades so they get five stars for nostalgia
