Reviews
While we were waiting and shivering a bit, one of the workers noticed right away and said, “Are y’all cold?” Then he turned the air down and added, “No suffering here at Hilbert’s!” That small moment says everything about their customer service, they truly care about people.
The hot wings and Kool-Aid are always on point, but it’s the warmth and hospitality that make this place special. If you want that old-school Austin kindness with food that hits every time, Hilbert’s on Cameron Road is it!
The chili cheese fries were exactly what I wanted, lots of chili onto of fries. Again pricing was great for quality and amount of food.
Food 10/10
Staff is very nice and friendly, the reviews were not lying. They are welcoming lovely to talk to. And the wait is very small, perfect for grab and go.
Service 10/10
Don’t let the location or appearance detour you.
I wish this was in my neighborhood.
I noticed from the reviews the Wings seemed to be the popular item, but despite this I ordered the hamburger. I mean hamburgers are in the name of the place. The cashier told me the onion rings were good, so I grabbed an order of those as well, and took a seat. I noticed a sign advertising that they had been in business 35 years.
A few minutes went by, several people came and went, picking up and placing orders, (most of them for wings) and my burger and onion rings came out.
The Burger
The burger was very much like a Whopper Burger from Burger King. The mayo and onion had the same flavor, the meat patty had a flame broiled flavor on the outer edge, and the bun was very similar as well. As far as size goes, the burger wasnt huge, but extra meat was only about 60 cents. There was also a steak burger option for not much more.
Onion Rings
The onion rings were very wide, the batter was crispy, the portion was large, and they had a good flavor. Im not sure if it was beer batter, but it was very similar, with the addition of a little bit of a sour flavor that wasn’t bad, but was different, it could have been lemon. Im not sure.
Other Menu Items
I noticed some random items on the menu as well. Cold cut sandwiches, crispy tacos, broiled or fried chicken, cheese sticks, and frito pie.
Service
Service was decently good, the cashier was friendly, spoke with all the customers, spoke Spanish and English. There was no table service, but the restaurant was clean inside.
Value
I felt the prices were a bit high. The burger was pretty basic for $5.60, the meat portion was a bit on the small side, the flavor was decent, but not different enough to bring me back. Combo’s made the meal slightly more affordable, but a basic no-cheese burger with a regular size onion ring, and a coke was $10.50. I saw a family order of Wings, 24 wings, 2 orders or fries or rings, and a 2L of Coke for $31.50 Which seemed like a decent deal for wings.
Overall Impression
I’d visit again to try the wings, but wouldnt go back specifically for the burger over just going to Burger King. The onion rings were good, but not good enough to bring me back, even as a quick exit when passing.
Bacon burgers were awesome, great flavor, real bacon! The onion rings are hand battered and crispy, super good, and the milkshake was all real ingredients and you could taste it! This place is a gem and reminiscent to me of old Austin favorites of mine. Definitely recommended, we’ll be back to try the wings, a lot of people in there were eating them.
