The food was really overpriced. A grilled ham and cheese for 18$ is outrageous. My steak and cheese that i ordered (bc i couldnt justify spending 18$ on a grilled ham and cheese) had no presentation at all, the steak was dry, and my bun looked dingy. I recommend making the extra 10 min drive to twin leaf, foods better and cheaper. The curly fries were good, our server was wonderful and i will admit the atmosphere is very cozy.

First time trying out this restaurant. The food was okay, I ordered a cheese quesadilla and I ordered a poutine. I liked it. I wish the waitress would have told me the quesadilla came with fries though and they were too salty for me. My husband ordered the fish and chips and he said it was alright.

Party of 9? No problem. Our waitress, Lacy, was proficient, professional and 100% amazing. It was a busy morning and she had a lot of tables, but she made sure our order was correct and that we had all the extras needed. There was a mix of breakfast and lunch menu items on our table and everyone seemed to enjoy there meal. The Vermont chicken burger with maple mayo had great flavor and the chicken wasn’t dry. Serving sizes were sufficient and the food was hot. They also offer take out and free local delivery.

A friend and I had lunch at Highland Restaurant last week for the first time.
We were so impressed that we had to go back today.
Our waitress, Leah, was on top of it all.
She greeted us with a smile and was so pleasant. Last week when we got there the restaurant was extremely busy, but she maintained her smile and provided us with exceptional service.
And, the food? My gosh! It was all absolutely delicious, beautifully plated and fairly priced.
Kudos to the cook!
It is beautifully decorated and the restaurant is so clean it shines.
This will now be our first choice for quality all the way around.

Food was great, try the tuna melt with fries. Quick service and very friendly, polite waitresses. 1st time there but definitely will try to get back there. I highly recommend you check this place out.

From the darling accessories adorning the parking lot sign and front entrance (see photos) to the shelves of darling teapots lining 2 walls (sadly, no pics as I didn’t want to disturb other guests), from the pie case brimming with delights to the classic licence plates displayed inside the front door, this place is the definition of ‘cozy’.
The food was top notch. The review asks what menu item I’d recommend. My daughter’s selection was the mushroom swiss burger. I’d recommend that. My selection was the classics Reuben. It was not offered as an option for the ‘recommended’ part of the review but should’ve been. Took me right back to dad’s kitchen when I was a young girl. My grandson had the pogo and smiley fries. I don’t have trouble getting him to eat new things but I can’t recall the last time a new food was gone so fast, regardless of how much he had to blow on it, lol.
The prices for said deliciousness was well worth it. I don’t mind saying that I don’t feel they ask enough, honestly. That said, I am positive it’s only one of many reasons this home away from home is so popular.
Our server, Ashley, was a doll. Smiling, friendly, had my grandsons full attention and was shocked when I gave her the slightest compliment. She is one of the reasons we will be going back in the near future. Love, love love The Highland Restaurant

I had a very disappointing experience at The Highland Restaurant in Massena.
Our server wasn’t using a notepad and forgot my coffee, which I only got after reminding her 10 minutes later. We ordered a buffalo poutine with ranch and specifically asked for no blue cheese—it came out with blue cheese anyway. When they remade it, the replacement wasn’t as warm as it should have been. The mozzarella stick sauce was watered down and flavorless.
For my meal, I ordered a mushroom Swiss burger with added lettuce and onion, but it came with tomatoes instead. Not a huge deal, but it showed a lack of attention to detail. My SO ordered a steak and cheese with curly fries with cheese, but the fries came out cold and without cheese, and the shaved steak was very dry.
On top of that, the service made us feel rushed. The server brought over takeout boxes before we were even finished, which gave the impression they wanted us out. We did ask about dessert (which we’ve always enjoyed in the past), but when she listed options, she spoke so quietly I couldn’t even hear her( I heard her yell at the kitchen staff for my coffee earlier) Then, she just brought them out on plates right after we had packed our meals away into containers like

EDIT: Decided to give this place a second try, because everyone deserves a second chance and most everyone else didn’t seem to have my issues…and somehow the second trip was even worse.
Walk in and we’re immediately greeted with empty tables full of dirty dishes…already not a great start. Found probably the one clean table to sit at. Server took our order, brought us drinks.
This is when everything went south.
First, the salads were brought before the appetizer…which seems backwards. Salads were merely okay, nothing special, nowhere enough dressing. Mozzarella sticks were fine but the sauce had entirely too many large chunks of tomato, almost like someone hurriedly crushed them to get it done.
Ordered the chicken parm and spaghetti and meatballs. Server brought us one wrong entree. After setting it on the table, she then proceeded to take it back and bring the right one, which was about as hastily thrown together as a school cafeteria meal. Said replacement had a hair in it to add further insult to injury. The chicken parm was clearly made with the same frozen breaded chicken breasts you can find in the frozen aisle of Walmart, which was deep fried well beyond completion to where it was hard as a rock, and it was topped with a half-melted slice of cheese.
At that point we were done, we asked for the check (to which we ended up getting comped anyways, probably the one minor victory of the whole ordeal) and left.
We won’t be back. I know some people seem to like the place, and I really wanted to because Massena certainly needs more options, but they lost me as a customer.
