Highland Inn is a great local bar with great people. They have cheap prices on their drinks and a good selection of draft beers (can’t beat $6.50 bombs).

We have passed by this place before, and was excited by the menu I saw online, since it looked like there was a lot of variety in it. I was wary when I arrived since it was a Saturday night and it did not seem as though the place was full. We were seated in the basement, which was a bit strange. The lights had a flickering thing going on that was intentional, trying to imitate candle light, but the effect was that of a strobe light and it was distracting. The menu is needlessly complicated since besides the main menu, there is a seperate groupings menu with the same dishes and a section on the menu that allows you to order a la carte.

We had the oysters Rockefeller and octopus appetizer. The oysters were good until we got to the third one–it was completely decayed and tasted and smelled strongly of ammonia. They did not make us pay for this, but I don’t understand how this could have gotten by the kitchen staff. The smell was strong!

We had the short ribs and tritip for our entree and it was OK. The chef needs to balance things a bit better. The short ribs entree was a lot of meat, but they really didn’t provide enough demiglace for the whole dish and the meat really needed it since it was a bit dry, and was obviously cooked ahead and either refrigerated or frozen. The tritip was underseasoned, and it came with a potato gallette that was obviously made from potatoes that had been refrigerated for some time, at least long enough to develop the characteristic oxidized flavor potatoes develop when cooked and refrigerated.

Dessert was OK, but even there, part of the creme brulee we had was undercooked, though one side of it was perfect. Just lots of inconsistencies. The restroom was dusty and hadn’t been thoroughly cleaned for a while, and there were no paper towels to dry hands after washing.

The one thing that was great was the wait staff. They were quite attentive and we never went without fresh drinks and they were honestly concerned with making us comfortable and getting food to us in a very professional manner. When there was a delay in our entrees, the waiter gave us a little amuse bouche to tide us over.

Overall, if the kitchen could do a better job (some of the clues point to laziness and lack of quality control in there) and they simplified the menu they would have a better shot of packing customers in.

Nothing great for the cost. We were put in the basement, and this place charges too much to have basement seating. Food was OK. Some of mine was cold. On the up side, the staff was really personable and I’m sure they would have accommodated me if I had complained about the food temperature. For me, at these prices, I just expect a better experience. It’s not a bad place, but I really wanted it be be great. We live close to it, and I was rooting for it, but I can’t recommend it. I don’t feel a need to return.

Bizarre to read reviews from when this place wasn’t open at all? Any way we went there 1/9/14 and it a very nice place. service was excellent, food was very good and the physical plant most commodious. We tried spring rolls, seafood chowder and gnocchi as appetizers. Probly liked the spring rolls least although their accompanying noddles were tasty.

Main courses rockfish with lentils and white beans, great pork chops, outstanding scallops and short ribs. Anyway we all tried each other dishes and argued about which was the best, which is a very good sign.

as good as everything was the desserts may have been the best part. Flourless chocolate cake, macadamia nut cake and carrot cake. all in all an excellent restaurant experience especially for the first week of operation.

Not cheap at 30 bucks or so for an entree but for a local comparison, we have dined at the various Blacks restaurants (and liked them very much) and this place was better and cost about the same.

Steak came out over cooked then under cooked. Oysters didn’t taste fresh, neither did the caviar. Waiter didn’t know what type of bread/ muffins he was bringing out, and I found some pot on the ground. Not exactly the classiest place.

We live 5 minutes away and been here before. It’s suppose to be ‘fine dining’, but this was one of the worst dinning experiences ever, and that’s an understatement. Here’s some notes: Dining room was freezing. Table for 2 was about 1 ft from next table. Waiter acted rushed, distracted, and never asked if we wanted
a second round of drinks. Our 2 steaks came out in about 5 minutes, so we knew something was wrong. My wife’s was undercooked and looked disgusting inside. Mine was grey (for medium rare) but cold. We sent them back, and waiter explained mine had been ‘left under the heat lamp too long’. What?????? New steaks were mediocre at best (better at Twist and Turn). Dessert tasted like it came from Costco. What a waste of money for inedible food. Next time, it’s back to Bistro Blanc, Iron Bridge, or Ranazul.

And yes, you will see this posting on other sites, it was that bad!

Nice congenial staff, atmosphere and attention to service; food underwhelming especially at nearly $75 per person with only 1 glass of wine and less than one appetizer per person; complete lack of presentation of entrees with serving sizes that could have passed for portions on a tasting menu.

Sunday brunch for 6 was a great experience. Appetizers (carterie plate, soups, grits & shrimp) were terrific, as were entrees (French toast, omlettes, others). Service was attentive and prompt. will definitely go again and again.

Have been there 3 times since it opened – excellent food, service and atmosphere! A bit pricey for these parts of the County (more along the lines of DC and Baltimore), but worth it.
