used to love highland for the cozy atmosphere and went there frequently for drinks and food. recently the barista pressured me to tip (which i was actively in the process of tipping) then began ranting about how people don’t tip and the workers don’t get paid much. during my time there i saw the worker tell a large table of people who had all bought drinks that they needed to leave unless they purchased more. publicly shaming people is an awful atmosphere for a coffee shop. i have never had this level of poor customer service before and will not be going back unless ownership changes.

Been coming here for years always a welcoming and friendly environment. sometimes it is packed without seating but jay makes the best coffee i’ve ever had. Jay is amazing and very friendly!! i don’t know how he gets to everyone in a timely manner to take orders or bring coffee/ food with how packed it gets. I have never had any issues here and recommend it to everyone!

seemed like a super cute place, i love that it’s open late. i went here for the first time last week and the owner was incredibly rude to me. i am a student, like many of the patrons to this place. i do not have much money. but regardless, i paid $15 for a bagel and tea. i did not leave a tip, and likewise i was publicly shamed. it was super awkward. had i know what i was getting myself in to, i wouldn’t have gone. the last thing i want to do is give someone money for humiliating me. there are many other, kinder, more affordable options in the area.

I really enjoyed this coffee shop and have been excited about the proximity that it has to my building as a PhD student. However, after being scolded today while I was in the active process of going through the tipping screen about how I should “be a decent person” because the workers only make 3$ an hour, I won’t be coming back. While I recognize that the model of table service is unique for a coffee shop, it is still a coffee shop. If it is to the point where this is being said to customers; perhaps this is not a sustainable model. I’ve both gotten table service here and ordered at the counter— so I don’t really think that it’s reasonable to expect customers to intuitively know what to do. Furthermore, the timing of this being said to me made me incredibly uncomfortable, and because I was so anxious, I couldn’t really think straight enough to select an appropriate tip amount as I was actively being spoken to in a confrontational manner. Had this been presented to me in a kinder way (and not after I was literally already in the middle of the process, actively in the screen), I would have heard the message. However, I am a depressed, anxious PhD student who is going through a lot personally (so, awesome work, you really chose the right target audience here) this made me further uncomfortable and also ruined my evening, so, my friends and I will find a different spot in the future. This appears to be a consistent problem with this owner and establishment based on other reviews. I also make 3$ an hour working pretty freaking hard myself— I don’t need a lecture.
Oh and cherry on top? They never even bright my husbands food lol. So you want me to tip you even though you literally didn’t even do half the job? No thanks.

My friends and I have been regulars at Highlands Coffee House since July — we come almost every other weekend and have always liked the atmosphere. But after what happened this past Saturday, we won’t be returning.
We came to celebrate my friend’s birthday. One friend was a little loud, and the owner came over and asked him to quiet down, which we totally understood and respected. But then the owner came back while we were actively looking at menus (some of us had already ordered drinks) and very rudely told us that if we weren’t going to order, he’d kick us out.
The situation escalated for no reason, and it made everyone at the table really uncomfortable. To make matters worse, the owner actually told us himself that he had been drinking on the job, which was incredibly unprofessional.
He completely ruined my friend’s birthday and the night for everyone there. It’s really disappointing, especially since we’ve supported this place for months. We won’t be coming back after that experience.

I don’t really get the bad reviews on here .. if you wanna order just go up to the bar. I’ve never had issues. The vibes, music, graffiti, and unique drinks are AMAZING. A great place to talk with friends over a few drinks or read a book. This is a Cincinnati gem.

Some people just don’t seem to get it, but this is an establishment meant for relaxing or doing homework. If you understand that, you get the vibe. When Jay is working, he really busts his butt to serve everyone in a timely manner, and he’s always so sweet. I’ve never had an issue with him because, having worked in service myself, I know how hard it is. A little kindness and patience really go a long way. This place isn’t for people who are in a rush or have a snobby attitude. Every time I leave, Jay thanks me for being kind and for coming in—it’s a small but meaningful gesture.
The vibe here is truly special, with great music, plants that have been growing for decades, charming vintage academic decor, and eclectic artwork everywhere—even cemented into the tables. The patio is perfect for hanging out, and the drinks are amazing—especially the chocolate amaretto shake, my personal favorite. Whether you’re in the mood for a delicious boozy drink or a coffee, there’s something for everyone. Above all, it’s an inclusive space where everyone is welcomed. If you’re here to unwind, enjoy the atmosphere, and take it all in, you’ll have a great time.

The drinks are really good, atmosphere is lovely however the service is really lacking. I’ve been coming here for a long time and haven’t had an issue – until the other night. The guy at the bar was really rude and lectured me on tipping when I hadn’t even looked in my wallet yet. This caught me off guard and I did not tip. I don’t understand why they’re so ready to get angry. Drinks for two people was 22 dollars as well.

We always have a great time here. The patio is such a great spot with the right weather – great coffee, really nice staff, and it’s super close to campus. Late night spots around here cannot compete – Highlands is hands down the best. Props to the one guy who was working tonight, he did a great job despite being the only person on staff that night. Nice selection of drinks as well – it can be a study spot or a lowkey place to hang out with friends. The prices are very reasonable, the music selection is great, and it’s not too loud. It’s not exactly quiet, but you can absolutely talk with no problem. 10/10 would recommend.
