During my solo business trip to Manchester, I sought a relaxed atmosphere, positive vibes, and, of course, delectable cuisine. The Michelin guide recommended that I could find all of this at the British bistro bar, Higher Ground, located in the city centre. And they were absolutely correct. Higher Ground truly lived up to its name, standing on a higher ground in terms of quality.

Their seasonal sharing menu offered a delightful blend of simplicity and unforgettable flavors. The dishes were straightforward, devoid of confusing Italian, French, or Japanese terminology often used in describing food. The meal was surprisingly invigorating, a quality I wouldn’t typically associate with dinner. Every ingredient in each dish was distinct in flavor, creating a harmonious combination.

What’s more, this delightful experience came at a very reasonable price of £66 for a tasting menu paired with a non-alcoholic beverage.

Higher Ground is certainly a place worth remembering and revisiting in the future.

We had an amazing anniversary dinner at Higher Ground! The atmosphere was smart and sophisticated, and the food exceeded all our expectations. Every dish was a highlight: my son absolutely loved the pork pasta, and my husband was very impressed with the seafood soup and the dessert. For me, the rhubarb dessert was the star of the show—simply divine. We truly enjoyed every moment of the evening. Highly recommended!

We visited higher ground for an early Saturday eve dinner to celebrate our first year in our new city: Manchester. Well, this experience confirmed that we don’t need to travel far for fine dining. We had the pleasure of meeting Joe and Richard (co-owners). Joe runs his pass with precision but made time for a friendly chat and let us feel at home. Every staff member we interacted with was present, friendly, and treated us like new friends. We left feeling like we were regulars already! The food was divine. Complex flavours achieved with simple, high quality British ingredients from handpicked local farms. Get a seat at the bar if you can. Best view of the kitchen action. Do pop into Bar Shrimp for a drink before! Yum yum – we will be back!

I discovered this bistro through the Michelin Bib Gourmand list and decided to give it a visit. The food absolutely lived up to expectations, with beautifully prepared dishes that were full of flavor and care. The wine pairing was excellent as well, thoughtfully selected and perfectly matched to the meal. On top of that, the waiters were genuinely friendly and welcoming, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. Overall, it was a place I’d happily return to.

Me and husband went here for early valentine dinner and chose the seasonal sharing menu. We sat on the open kitchen area. It was fascinating to see the chefs works! The foods were sensational from the first course to the dessert. I can’t pick my favorite because it’s soo good. Will come back here for our anniversary for sure!

Came here on our first anniversary and it was phenomenal. From as soon as we stepped through the door the team couldn’t do enough to help, from explaining every dish to ensuring allergies and tastes were taken into account.
Sitting at the Kitchen counter was amazing to watch the brilliant team of chefs at work.
All round an wonderful experience, and thank you for making our anniversary so special.
Definitly found a new annual tradition

A little disappointing. I don’t often like to post negative reviews as I know they can be damaging to a hospitality business in this climate but I want to be completely honest. The food wasn’t bad, it was just very underwhelming. Perhaps my expectations were too high based on both the cost and the reputation of the restaurant. The service was excellent, ambience great, wine top notch.

The food however, didn’t meet the same standards. The pea fritters were bland, I expected them to be less seasoned to balance out the heavy use of cheese on top but there was no other flavour to them (herb/spice etc). The pork and mushroom pasta dish my partner enjoyed but I felt was over complicated. Very salty minced pork in a sauce with heavily pickled mushrooms. I like the combination for balance but feel both were too extreme. The halibut my partner couldn’t even finish so I had to because I didn’t want it to go to waste. Unusual textures and flavours. Perhaps the menu could indicate the preparation more clearly as personal taste is subjective. The stand out dish of the entire meal was actually the bread and butter. Not life changing but compared to the rest of the meal very nice. We had planned to have dessert but by the end of the meal we didn’t want another disappointing dish. Sorry to the restaurant if this sounded harsh but for the money paid I’d expect better than average.

Dined at Higher Ground recently. The food was pretty decent overall, with fresh oysters being a highlight. I had higher expectations for the main dishes though, from the scallops to the pasta, which felt a little underwhelming. It wasn’t bad by any means, just not particularly memorable. The kind of food that tends to split opinions around the table rather than win everyone over. Service-wise, the team were friendly and polite, though the pacing could be improved with dishes arriving a bit quicker and in better succession.

A bit underwhelming experience. Yes the quality of the food and ingredients are of good quality, but I did miss the sensations and elevations of a really good dinner. We had the sesonal set menu. Which I think was a misstake, a la carte would been a better choice.
The set menu came with an awkward feature. I went with my colleague and most dishes were shared from a common serving plate. Would be OK if we had been given clean cutlery to use when sharing the plates, but we weren’t given any. Didn’t bother to hunt down a waiter for such a basic thing, so we just shared the entire dinner with our dirty cutlery.

Blown away. Seriously. Out of the water. What an amazing foodie experience. Tasting menu. Not a single element of anything was under par. Exquisite. OMG suet beef and kidney pudding. Speechless. Sublime. Service excellent. Michelin Star? Come on what’s stopping you?
