My then fiancé now wife and I stumbled upon this place while celebrating our yearly anniversary. Chef Kappa/John was a wonderful host, plying us with multiple rounds of free sake after learning of our occasion and shared LA backgrounds as well as coinciding birthdays and date nights from other guests at our table. Before the alcohol hit, the nigiri was already quite flavorful, service attentive, and company pleasant. In particular, the seared amberjack with green onion and ginger reminded me a lot of steamed Cantonese fish, which I’d never had in sushi form. 10:10 would recommend this place for a fun tasty omakase!

Hidden Fish lives up to its name, tucked discreetly behind El Gordo Mexican restaurant, but once you find it, you’re in for something special. This is an intimate 18-course omakase served at a 12-seat counter, with most courses focused on pristine nigiri sushi featuring fish largely flown in from Japan. Every bite was fresh, thoughtful, and beautifully executed.

The counter seating creates a relaxed, communal vibe that encourages conversation among guests and interaction with the chef, which really elevates the experience. Service is warm, attentive, and genuinely friendly without ever feeling forced. The sake menu is well-curated, the space and decor are elegant yet comfortable, and pricing feels very appropriate for the quality and care that goes into each course.

The menu changes constantly, and I loved every course—no filler, all hits. Parking is easy once you know where you’re going, and while finding it feels like a secret mission, it’s absolutely worth it. I’ll be back on my next trip to San Diego… assuming I can snag a seat. Reservations are a must.

Very cool date night spot. Recently featured on the Michelin Guide (2025). Chef Peter was awesome. Hands down the best sushi experience I’ve ever had. The 1-hour omakase was perfect.

Private seating, good tempo of food. Each chef only focuses on about four people. They staff is very attentive. I would strongly recommend this establishment for sushi and food enthusiasts. I can see why they had a Michelin mention. The intention and care behind the preparations were exhibited in the execution of our delicious Omakase dinner. I would fly back down just to eat here again. Our chef was knowledgeable and carefully crafted our pieces. Each piece was perfectly balanced with distinct flavors between the bites.

This place is great! Don’t let the naysayers dissuade you. Excellent omakase experience. I left feeling full and satisfied. Each piece of nigiri seemed so thoughtfully created and our chef was so personable. They even give you a pencil to make notes on the menu. Would definitely recommend and will be returning!

10/10 experience. The best omakase in San Diego and some of the best I’ve ever had. Incredibly prepared with super fresh fish, and the rice is definitely the best rice I’ve had. True omakase and nigiri forward. Outstanding service. We got to sit next to Chef John (the owner) and he was awesome, even comped us a few drinks for my girlfriend’s birthday. We are customers for life now and already can’t wait to go back. If you’re thinking about it, do it and treat yourself here

I will never go again. 90 minutes course was reduced to only 40 minutes. I was far away from being full. Additional order is much more expensive. No innovation of Sushi. I cannot believe it has a Michelin recommendation.

We were excited to try this spot, but the experience was ruined by contradictory communication and a $300+ penalty for trying to be considerate to their other guests.

Despite inquiring about bringing a toddler, it wasn’t until 15 minutes before our reservation that we were told they have no high chairs, no stroller space, and no extra seating. Meaning a one-year-old would have to be held for the duration of our Omakase meal at a 13-person bar. Realizing this environment wasn’t conducive to our child or the comfort of other diners, we arrived and spoke to the staff. They told us they “totally understood” and despite us specifically asking about cost they gave no indication of a penalty.

After leaving to avoid disrupting the small dining room, and being told over the phone and in person not to worry about fees, they called back hours later and charged us the full meal price ($150+/person). Had they been transparent about charging us the full amount upfront, we would have stayed because truthfully, it’s not our job to preserve their quiet space. If you allow kids, it isn’t my problem to “be mindful of your other guests experiences” and I would have at least gotten to enjoy my meal. Instead, they chose a one-time fee over building a long-term relationship with local diners.

If you have children, be warned: they don’t have a ‘no kid’ policy, but they make it impossible to bring them and then penalize you for their accommodation gap.

If you’re looking for a great sushi spot that does make accommodations and has an excellent customer experience (bonus they have a bar-top high chair if you can’t get a sitter) GO TO SOICHI!

Food 5:
Wow… every bite is like its own adventure. The variety of fish that was served paired with the detail of the chefs was a perfect combination that made this experience worth every penny. My favorite Nigiri’s were the Smokey Albacore and the Jack Mackarel

Service 5:
The waiters pay close attention to make sure you need anything. The chefs were really informative and were a pleasure to share a conversation with. The timing of each fish being served was perfect.

Atmosphere 3:
The place was really small and intimate. Only sits about 12 people. Inside the restaurant was nothing special. However this is what happens when the main focus is the food and service.

Over all 4.5/5

This was the most laid back yet dialed experience Ive ever had. My brother and me enjoyed every piece and shared sake and beers with our amazingly talented sushi chef Steven. Cairo killed it with the service! Would go again 1 million times.
