Asked for an extra complimentary popcorn because of how good it was.
The waiter made sure we ordered in decent quantity and not excessive.
The mac and cheese is filling. It’s enough to fill two people along with the starters. See photos + bill. That was enough for two.
The garlic pretzel is a def recommend. The cheese sausage a pass. There’s also a selection of hot sauces you can ask for.
The restaurant looks great, the open kitchen is a nice touch, and the menu is absolutely massive (almost intimidatingly so, in a good way).
As a vegetarian, I was pleasantly surprised. There were around four main meal options plus a couple of sides, which felt like a decent effort rather than the usual token veggie nod. Vegans may struggle a bit, I didn’t clock anything obvious, though I could be wrong.
We were initially seated in a very noisy area surrounded by kids’ birthday parties (chaos with balloons), but when we asked to move, the staff immediately sorted us out with a booth, much calmer and actually really lovely.
Service was spot on. Our server was superb, friendly without being overbearing, and we tipped him accordingly.
The food came out piping hot, fresh, well presented, and very tasty. The standout for me was the tater tots with poutine gravy, absolute filth in the best possible way. The veggie burger was fine; it lacked a bit of flavour, but that’s veggie burgers for you, nothing a generous dose of barbecue sauce couldn’t fix. The mac and cheese, though? Sublime. Everyone else’s food looked excellent too.
Overall, it’s a solid choice if you’re on that side of Shrewsbury. Relaxed, fun, good service, and reliably tasty food.
I had one of the daily specials (Thursday’s “Barbecue Bonanza”) which was a mix of barbecue delights – Memphis style baby back ribs, Southern
fried chicken, BBQ glazed chicken wings,
hand pulled pork, BBQ pit beans & hickory-
smoked pork, jalapeno & cheese sausage.
Served with skin-on fries & slaw. (I skipped the slaw)… I’m so glad I passed on the starters, or I wouldn’t have been able to finish! Didn’t even have room for the desserts!
The 8hr slow cooked beef rib also looked incredible, as did the brisket…
Can’t wait to come back again!
Highly recommended, but come hungry!
Definitely I’ll be back.
I ordered the smoked platter for two.
The brisket was exceptionally dry. The pork belly was dry and the upper part that was supposed to be crusty, was saggy.
The ribs were dry as well.
The beans and chicken side dish had so much chicken skin. That made the texture really awful.
It is important to say that the service was great and so as the atmosphere. The place is clean and shows NFL games. It made me feel like I was in the middle of a sportsbar in the UK.
Too bad the food was not up to standard. Oh well. I guess we’re still in the UK after all.
The fries with cheese and chilli could’ve done with more chillies, but that’s a personal preference and they were still very tasty.
Staff were attentive but not overbearing. I’ve already sought out a Hickorys closer to where I live so I can go again!
We chose Hickory’s Smokehouse in Shrewsbury on a whim for our anniversary dinner, and we’re so glad we did! It turned out to be a fantastic and memorable evening.
While the menu isn’t overflowing with options for vegetarians, the choices available are truly excellent. My husband had the delicious Veggie Burger, and I thoroughly enjoyed the flavorful Mac and Cheese. Both were satisfying and high-quality dishes, proving that a smokehouse can deliver great meat-free options.
However, the absolute star of the entire meal was the Garlic Pretzel with Cheese. Seriously, if you visit, this appetizer is a must-try and completely stole the show—it was outstanding!
Beyond the brilliant food, the service was truly exceptional. Our waitress, Ellie, was absolutely amazing. She was attentive, friendly, and went above and beyond to make our anniversary dinner feel special. She is a credit to the team and absolutely deserves a raise!
We highly recommend Hickory’s for both the delicious food (including the unexpected vegetarian highlights) and the five-star service.
