Saw this place in a search while visiting the Amana Colonies earlier this year and looked forward to an opportunity to stop and give it a try. Got the opportunity while traveling from the Moline area to Waterloo with a little time to spare, so took advantage of the opportunity.
The exterior was clean, modern and inviting – with a literal buzz of excitement, activity and energy surrounding the building. The interior was a little dated, but clean and inviting – drawing your attention to the product that we are all there to enjoy.
Best of all, and the reason for stopping in the first place, was the delicious ice cream. We shared the hand-dipped Black Raspberry Truffle (see picture), as we had already eaten a large dinner – and thoroughly enjoyed every bite! If you are in the area and love ice cream – you will definitely want to stop at Heyn’s!

Top end ice-cream. On the last trip, I had a scoop of the cappuccino and a scoop of the coffee ice-cream. Both had a smooth and rich flavor. The family raves about their Oreo ice-cream.

Still as good as it used to be! This is a place I used to frequent as a very young child-I was surprised to see that it was still here as we passed through town. Customer service was good, prices are affordable and the ice cream itself tastes great! No complaints!

We normally love Heyn’s, but my wife and I hated this last visit on 2/14. When we entered, the two young male employees seemed bothered or inconvenienced that they had to pause their conversation with each other in order to serve us. My wife and I both got milkshakes and the shakes were both very milky without much flavor, which was disappointing. My shake also had several wax paper like bits of something in it that I had to keep spitting out, so I’m hoping I noticed all of the pieces and didn’t eat any.

Hello to all my gluten-free Celiac/dairy free friends, this place was so delicious. I wanted so much ice cream. The ice cream are labeled gluten free and they only had one kind that was gluten-free/ dairy free which was I believe a sorbet. One of the servers her name was Tessa and she was so kind and she brought out the allergy book to make sure that the chocolate ice cream that I had was gluten free. Very friendly staff. Very delicious ice cream. If you are in Iowa City, please go visit them

Delicious ice cream but unreliable hours. Went at 7:15pm on January 3rd, 2026 and the doors were locked despite the sign saying they are open until 9:30pm, and customers and workers inside.

Love Heyn’s! Lots of choices, convenient clean location, and super popular (but don’t let the line fool you – the staff know what they’re doing and it goes quickly). Open year round – although hours vary.

Ice cream taste amazing however the amount of ice cream with the size cup I picked out did not match up. So paying 5 dollars for 1 scoop of ice cream does not equal out to me. The employee who helped me was unsure of themselves as well and it was busy. So paid and left. However not to pleased with this place. The prices seemed good but now I’m not so sure.
Have not eaten any yet and I got the size kids double but got only 1 scoop of ice cream.
