Decided to try Hessen Haus before a show at the Civic Center.
Went with the Fish & Chicken with Chips. Two pieces of cod, two pieces of chicken, and French fries.
The fish is better than the Mile. Light, Crisp Breading with flaky fish. The curry sauce is very nice & add a surprising flavor that was so good. It’s definitely oily, but hot and fresh. The breading stayed on and I love how it was crisp. The chicken is very good, tender and juicy with the crispy breading. I love this combo to be able try each. The fries were good as well, but just a distraction from the fish & chicken. I feel they could drain some of the oil off the food would help.
For lunch it was plenty of food. The service was good and it wasn’t very busy. Would definitely come back for the Fish or Chicken & Chips.

Great ambience. Very good meal. The potatoes, red cabbage and jagerschnitzel was excellent. Great house better. Better than commercial brands. The waiter was great assistant in choosing meal and drinks. Price is competitive and reasonable. I woukd strongly recommend the Hessen Haus.

Recommended by staff at our hotel. Access on 235 was easy. Parking garage next door-reasonable. Restaurant was busy (Saturday night). We (4 of us) sat at a table with another group. Had great conversation. Server Tyler (young lady) besides good looking, was very helpful. Knew her German beers, brought samples and made suggestions. When it came to dinner, again she was spot on. Had sampler appetizer which was perfect for four. Roulatan was delicious, as was Schnitzels. Can’t imagine how packed it was during October fest. Steady flow of customers, young and older. Prices weren’t unreasonable. Will definitely return.

Excellent food with generous portions. Friendly staff and the atmosphere is quite fun with the German decor. Highly recommend the German chocolate cake and their giant pretzels.

In town and needed a place to meet up with a friend. Saw this place and it looked phenomenal. And guess what? It was. The atmosphere is definitely old pub like. Service was super friendly. I tried the Black Forest schnitzel and the Roulandon Rolls. My friend got the Best of the Wourst. Everything was spot on. Loved it all. If you are in the mood for German food this place is it.

In town overnight and tried out the Jagerschnitzel with jager gravey. Pretty tasty. Had to save room for the German chocolate cake…had to save some for later! Great service and cool place to eat and socialize.

2/23/26 I ordered delivery and my order was the rueben sandwich with haus red potatoes and side salad. The corned beef was cut from a brisket cut, not deli style meat.
It was thick and delicious. Bread was grilled perfectly.
Haus red potatoes have a bacon jam and cheese, so tender and delicious. Side salad had all the ingredients you need and good portion size. This place takes great pride in the food and service they provide. Great food. Lots of choices on the menu. 10/10

Food was fantastic! Traditional German fair with a Weihenstephaner Hefe Dunkel for the win. Go during happy hour to enjoy half price appetizers before your meal. Glad we drove downtown to check this place out while cruising through Des Moines.

The food here is always awesome. The Black Forest schnitzel and schweinshaxe are our favorites, but we’ve never had anything disappointing here. Great German beer selection. This place is popular for a reason and the staff stays busy. Come hungry and be prepared to stay a little while.
