The wait staff are excellent, helpful, and effective. The air conditioner is in poor working order and could not keep up with the high temps and high humidity outside; it was a warm oven inside. The food was meh with the highlight being the appetizers. I think the armadillo eggs are a must try. The schnitzel was overly rich, with a weird texture. The beer selection is extensive and varied and another bright spot on the menu.

Casey, my server, was friendly and attentive. She suggested Black Forest Schnitzel, so I went for it. What a great decision! Delicious spaztle covered in a cheese sauce with ham and spinach, topped with a nicely portioned schnitzel. This was a staple of home food growing up, and it brought me back to a happy place. Also ordered chocolate cake because Casey said it was house-made. It was fantastic, and I will be coming back.

It was busy on the Friday night we went but that didn’t affect our service. Love the atmosphere and there were so many things on the menu I wanted to try! I ordered the pretzel crusted sauerkraut balls, you only get 4 but they are a decent size and like a fried Reuben, so good! And for my entree I had the veggie Spaetzle which was really good too! My friend had the black forest schnitzel which I tried and the sauce was really really good! I definitely want to try some more things from their menu next time.

Just like Ray Kinsella in Field of Dreams, I kept asking myself: “Is this Iowa?” Now, that statement isn’t a slam on Iowa, I would have asked that regardless what state this great place was located in because that’s the thing. It’s in the US, and not in Deutschland itself. We were visiting Des Moines and heard about this place so I had to try it. Everything was wonderful. From the decor, to the large on-tap beer selection to the drinks and, of course, the food. I felt like I was in Germany. The food was great and you will not leave hungry. They actually made great cocktails too if you aren’t much of a beer drinker. Wunderbar!

Very glad we finally made it to Hessen Haus last night for dinner. It’s a really cool indoor space but a nice outdoor patio seating area as well. They have a fantastic list of German beers. Food is very good. The wiener schnitzel is one of the best preparations of this dish we have had, and the schweinshaxe pork shank was delicious as well – tender on the inside and crispy on the outside. The mac and cheese is also fantastic as a side. To top it off, the server we had (and service overall) was phenomenal! We will definitely return!

This little slice of Heaven brought back memories of my German Grandmother’s cooking. I had the Schweinshaxe, pictured, the German Potato Salad underneath was amazing. If you’re into German beer, this place has it, or so it seems. I’m not sure if work will take me back to Des Moines, but this place will see me back! It’d be well worth the 6 hour drive. I feel as I spent more money there than the average person because of the authenticity of their dishes and the memories the aroma and taste unlocked.

I don’t give 5 stars often but the atmosphere, food, and service was just what you would find in Munich, Germany. It was so good! The Scheinaxe (sp?) Rivaled the one I had in Germany and I couldn’t have been happier, it was delicious. The cheese curds with the curry sauce was so good and authentic. We’re not beer people but they had so many choices on tap. We walked here in the SkyWalk from the Marriott downtown. Such an easy walk and much needed after I stuffed myself. Check it out!

I could be called bias but that doesn’t make this a dishonest review. Lived in DSM for over 2 decades. Only visited this place for social outings thru work. Limited to appetizers and drinks. Do I ever feel like I have been missing out now. Finally tried the rest of the menu just a month ago or so. Amazing food and atmosphere which is only complimented by the service. Alicia is a superb server, super attentive, and extremely patient. Highly recommend you make this a regular lunch spot. The Turkey Bacon melt + French fries = ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
