Inspired by memory, shaped by place. (Bar) Hermanito is a bar-forward, neighborhood Mexican restaurant in the heart of Sawtelle. Simple, fresh food built around house made Sonoran style tortillas. New and classic Mexican cocktails with subtle nods to the neighborhood’s Japanese heritage.
Trendy wood-paneled eatery dishing up tacos, nachos & burritos, plus bar bites, cocktails & mezcal.

We were greeted by the host who was very nice and who accommodated the large group. They had no coffee to serve and no ingredients for an old fashion. Bartender had no personality and didn’t have alternatives or offered to make anything, rather he was more concerned that I wasn’t at my table to order my drink. The waffle that came with a banana was not ripe but green.
Bathroom was gross and not kept up. Food was decent and ambiance was good. Prices for some items were pretty pricey.
Review: Typical, trendy place, in a popular location on Sawtelle (New Japantown in WLA.) Overpriced food and drinks. No calamari and some other favorites. Yes, they “ran out” of calamari at 630pm? I’ve had better street tacos than their carnitas tacos and birria tacos, and for 1/3 of what they are charging. The alcoholic drinks were typically priced for newer restaurants and were “just ok.”
But it’s a cool hangout for a lot of people, including my daughter. Maybe I’m not cool. I’d rather go to Paco’s Tacos for better food, more authentic Mexican, better drinks and half the price. That’s where I will be going on my birthday.
We decided to order a mix of items because it was our first time. We started with the Guacamole, which was great as expected, but it was very small in size. We liked the flavors, but honestly, they should’ve given a larger portion. I felt overcharged for this one. Next came the Lobster Aguachile and I thought this one was my least favorite. It should’ve had more lobster and I felt there was way more liquid than anything else. I would skip this one and not recommend. Next came the Hamachi Sashimi and this one was actually very good. It was a good sized portion and tasted fresh and light and it is a great summer dish. Next were the Chilean Salmon Tacos, and I thought these were fantastic, probably my favorite dish of the night. The sauce on top really made it and it was a perfectly cooked piece of fish. For entrées we ordered the Crispy Skin Branzino and the Papa Flautas. The Crispy Skin Branzino was fantastic, the skin was perfectly crispy, and it was a good sized portion although the salsa verde on the bottom was not my favorite. The Papas Flautas were actually terrific and the avocado ranch really made it. I would order it again just for that sauce.
Overall, a really solid meal although more expensive than it should be. I would suggest stopping in if you want to have a drink while you eat or just plan to order to two items per person max.
