We sat at the chef’s counter, which meant we not only got to watch everything happening in the kitchen but were even treated to a special dish reserved just for our seats.
The dishes were all thoughtful, creative, and well executed. It was especially amazing to watch the chef at each station really putting their hearts and souls into getting their part done right. (We even saw some dishes get redone because the chef wasn’t fully satisfied with his/her work.)
Every dish was delicious but some of the standouts were the Dungeness crab and pineapple pickle appetizers, farm beets with fennel and yogurt, grilled kingfish with artichoke and mussel emulsion, scallop with smoked trout roe, and 32 day dry aged rib chop.
Everything was perfectly cooked but the fish, scallop and rib chop were really something else. We normally won’t order any type of steak in the U.S. because we spend a lot of time in the Basque Country and nothing beats their Txuleta steak (pronounce “chuleta”). However, this is a set menu so we had no choice and this may end up being the best U.S. beef dish we’ve ever had, so kudos to the chef who was handling the grill. (She also was cooking the scallops, which were amazing too.)
Along with the meal, we had a non-alc sparkling chard and an excellent locally produced lager beer, which went well with everything. (This is usually true of lagers but not IPAs, so keep that in mind when ordering beer to go along with food.) Next time we’ll go with the very affordable wine pairing because we would love to see how it goes with the food, but were taking it easy on the alcohol that night.
And to wrap up, we had three desserts, with the corn ice cream with salty caviar being our favorite.
The ingredients are all super fresh, with many coming from their nearby farm, and even though we left stuffed, we did not feel heavy or uncomfortable. And we were told they change the whole menu quarterly but switch out individual dishes as certain key items come in and out of season.
We have found some American Michelin starred restaurants to be over priced but not at Heritage. It is worth every penny.
The food for many courses like this in a Michelin starred restaurant is super friendly, and do not worry that you will get bloated after many courses because of the pace of serving, and the food itself.
I was so obsessed with the charming Craftsman-style building, welcoming interiors, and beautifully plated dishes that reflect its refined yet homey dining experience!!
Here is why did Heritage Earn a Michelin Star?
1. Exceptional, Seasonally Driven Cooking
• High-quality, California-accented cuisine delivered through a multicourse tasting menu that changes with the seasons. Dishes are both creative and rooted in local flavor—think preserved kumquats with roasted beet and dry-aged duck, followed by a dessert featuring charred strawberries and yuzu granita.
• Reasonable pricing for such multi-course fare further underscores its value in the fine-dining landscape.
2. Warm, Comfortable Ambiance in Iconic Setting
• Located in a converted Craftsman home in the historic Rose Park neighborhood, the atmosphere feels intimate and intentional—like dining in someone’s beautifully curated home.
• The execution of hospitality is relaxed yet detail-oriented, offering a uniquely personal fine-dining experience.
3. A Michelin Green Star for Sustainability
• Heritage isn’t just about delicious food—it’s deeply committed to eco-conscious practices:
• They grow produce at their own farm and source from local farmers markets.
• Their meat and seafood are sustainably sourced from within California.
• They support local artisans, including partnering with a nearby bakery and seamstress for staff aprons.
• The restaurant follows zero-waste principles and has earned both Green and Blue certifications for its efforts.
4. A Local Landmark—and Long Beach’s First Michelin Star Restaurant
• Heritage made history by becoming the first restaurant in Long Beach to be awarded a Michelin Star, marking a milestone for the city’s growing culinary scene.
• Michelin praised how the restaurant offers a relaxed yet refined experience with impeccable details
So appreciated that people who really care and dedicate for maintaining the standard of food quality. Freshly cooked food became rare in such an everywhere precooked food.
Heritage sparkles both on the plate and in spirit.
Its Michelin Star reflects top-tier culinary quality, while its Green Star honors its environmental stewardship. Add in the cozy atmosphere and community impact, and you’ve got a truly special spot—not just for Long Beach, but for California dining as a whole.
Hope you enjoy!
The other thing worth mentioning is that the place is set up as though it were someone’s house. At one point the kitchen started smoking and there was a struggle to keep the door open to air out some of the smoke. It was very likely a unique situation, but that combined with the music did unfortunately sour some of the otherwise great experience. I would recommend giving it a try, but after having a hardy lunch.
