I don’t understand the hype. I came by around 2pm on a Monday – not during their lunch rush or anything – and was pretty underwhelmed by the whole thing.
First, the service was just ok. I stood at their ordering window for well over 5 minutes before someone came to take my order. No one even stopped by to say “we’ll be with you in a minute” or anything. A few times I wondered if they just weren’t taking orders at the window, but someone finally did. They didn’t say “sorry for the wait” or anything – just a curt “what can I get you?” Again, it’s not like this was during lunch rush or anything.
Second, I was unimpressed with the “menu”. You can get a burger, cheeseburger, and your standard double options, and they have ham & cheese or grilled cheese sandwiches (although I have no idea why anyone would come here and not get a burger or why anyone would bother coming here with picky kids who don’t want a burger when there are better options). You can add bacon or jalapenos (I added the latter, which is the only reason it’s not 2 stars). Their side selection is a variety of bags of chips – not even fries are offered here.
Third, the burger itself is just a basic burger. I figured for all the hype, it much have some amazing seasoning to give it some special flavor, or some “secret sauce” that elevates it. Maybe it was impressively big. Nope, just a standard size, basic cheeseburger. And the cheese was so far separated from the patty that it was still just a cold slice of cheese. Not impressed.
Maybe this is the best burger in Jacksboro? But I wouldn’t bet on it (and I hope not for those who live here). I’d certainly not recommend going out of your way for it – just stop at Sonic or Whataburger and you’ll get basically the same quality burger, and probably faster service.

Great old time smash burger. No frills just a great local spot that been dishing up burger since 1916! Thats 109 years!! My fist time trying as I was just passing through. Great burger, its not Fast Food so be prepared to wait a bit while they cook it up. A few picnic tables outside and limited seating ,school desks, inside. Definitely worthy of a try if you are on the fence.

While staying at Fort Richardson State Park we went in town to enjoy a burger from herds burger. We have heard the history of this place and have seen it listed on several TV shows and YouTube so I had to give it a try. If you’re in Jacksboro and you don’t go to Herds Burger, you’re missing out.

A really good old fashioned smash burger here in Jacksboro. Patties made and cooked when you order, very flavorful. Ordered mine with bacon and cheese, bacon was thick and cooked perfectly. Toppings fresh. Highly recommend if you’re in the area. Owners very friendly, a homey place to eat.

We were excited to check this place out and either we just missed it or it doesn’t say, this is a cash only place. Hamburgers were fresh and served hot, not the best burger for sure and not the worst. Overall, a little expensive for the basics. Not sure we would go back.

We have seen this place on several different TV shows and online publications and thought we would give it a try. We were not disappointed. The hamburger was outstanding. We loved the quaint little building that it was in and the atmosphere that it provided. If you’re ever in Jacksboro and you don’t stop at herds Burger, you’ll be missing out.

Finally got a chance to stop and grab a burger that I heard so much about . Ordered the single with cheese, chips and a Coke, waited about 8 minutes for the burger and went out to my pickup to enjoy. It was real good, real simple with chopped lettuce, onion, tomato and pickles with a smear of mustard and a nice smashed piece of beef!
The old place has room for about a dozen patrons inside and tables outside.
Would definitely recommend this place for a good hamburger and will stop in again!

Hours are ONLY ’til 7pm!!! Not 9pm as of March 2025! We arrived right at 7 and they were very kind and took our order without complaint! Very friendly! Food was GREAT! Tasty! No Fries, No Rings! Just Burgers, Chips and a Drink.. Outside seating, could be a weather dependent visit~ Bring CASH! Enjoy this yummy burger!
