Herbie’s Bar & Chowder House has been part of the Marathon dining scene since the 1940s, making it the oldest continually operated restaurant in town. Originally Maggie’s Chowder House, it later became Fishnet’s before officially becoming Herbie’s in 1963.
Since 2014, the tradition of scratch-made cooking, fresh seafood, smoked meats, and craft beer has continued strong. In 2023, new owner Adrian Jessome began the next chapter, honoring Herbie’s legacy while bringing fresh energy to the Keys. Alongside Christina and Michael McKenna, the team proudly keeps the spirit of Herbie’s alive for locals and visitors alike.
Long-running seafood joint serving favorites such as conch fritters & chowder in old-school digs.

Herbie’s is the vibe — fun, relaxing, and perfectly laid back! We brought our under-2-year-old and had an amazing time thanks to a great staff, an awesome beer selection, and food that came out piping hot straight from the kitchen (you can tell it’s FRESH and it was absolutely incredible!). They also have super convenient clip-on high chairs that attach right to the table, making dining with a little one so much easier. Just a heads up — no reservations and it can get packed during peak hours, so plan accordingly. Trust us, this place is a must-visit!

We thought this place was phenomenal! Full order of buffalo wings (7/10), bowl of clam chowder (8/10), 2 beers and a slice of key lime pie (9/10). The atmosphere was cool and the staff was really nice!

Katie was our waitress, she was working her tail off yet she was still very nice, funny, informative and a true pleasure!! We came here with new friends because we both saw it was on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, Guy Fieri and wanted to try it out. The place is NOT FLASHY BUT SOOOOO YUMMY!!!! Didn’t miss this hidden gem. I’m pretty selective (others would say picky ) when it comes to food. The clam chowder was yummy we all liked it, pieces of clam in every spoonful. I got the cheeseburger and parafries. Husband got the Fish and chips. I can’t recall the other two order names. But we shared the s’mores dessert and the brownie and ice cream. The brownie and ice cream was the clear winner!! Warm delicious brownie with a nice scoop of vanilla ice cream and a drizzle is chocolate syrup. The s’mores marshmallows were yummy. The chocolate chips under the marshmallows didn’t melt all the way so the chips were still whole, that being said the two chocoholics in our group loved the spoonfuls of pure chocolate . It also comes with graham crackers. So it’s worth the try. But the brownie was a slam dunk. There are three areas to sit. Nice to have three seating options available. Nuff said, just go and enjoy a new meal experience.

We arrived about a half hour before closing, assuming we might not be allowed in to order food/drinks, instead we were warmly welcomed. Our waitress Tanya was so helpful and attentive. The food came quickly and was delicious! Highly recommend the fish and chips followed with some key lime pie!

Always a great time here. Was soooo hungry and the chicken sandwich with buffalo is always my favorite. The poutine isn’t the worst but the gravy could use some work, very flour tasting and bland. Need to try and mix chicken and brown gravy for a better poutine 100%
The French fries here are some of the best I’ve had. I don’t know what it is but they are soooo good. Rest of the family had the brisket and it’s always a favorite for anyone we go with. Thanks again and see you next time 🙂

My friend recommended this place, so we had to give it a try. Another Triple D diner previously visited by Guy Fieri. We arrived at opening time on a rainy Saturday and were the first guests of the day. That very quickly changed – when we left, the place was packed. Gotta hand it to our server, she slayed the lunch crowd all while not writing one order down. I could barely recall MY order, let alone a full restaurants worth. Enjoyed the Mahi tacos and the clam chowder. So delicious and such fresh ingredients. My friend was able to request corn tortillas for hers as she is gluten free. Was happy to see they sell the chowder by the pint or quart for take out. Extra good on a chilly day. Will definitely return!

Stopped by for a late dinner around 7:30pm. Our waitress was super friendly and food came out quick! We got the chicken and smashed potato and the Mahi Reuben. Both were super good although the chicken and smashed potato could have been seasoned just a bit more (the white sauce in particular).

Herbie’s Bar and Chowder House is such a fun, laid-back spot — a true hidden gem in the Keys! Our waitress, Lauren, was fantastic: super attentive, friendly, and made us feel right at home. The fish and chips were perfectly crisp and delicious, and the smoked wings were packed with flavor. I especially appreciated that they served the drums and flats together — just the way it should be! The beer selection was impressive with tons of options, and the Hazy Mermaid was a standout. They even have TouchTunes, so you can play your favorite songs while kicking back with a cold drink. This place has great food, a chill atmosphere, and awesome service — definitely a must-stop when you’re in the area!

Another near my motel so walked down to it. It’s got a couple of doors that lead to different areas…and some outdoor style seating.
Had the trifecta. Clam chowder (BIG bowl), fish and chips – 3 filets, and of course Key Lime Pie! All excellent.
