My wife and I celebrated our 4-year wedding anniversary at The Helmsman, and I have to say… major husband win.
We were staying at the Mystic Marriott Hotel & Spa for business, and I made a reservation as a surprise. From the moment we arrived, the staff made it feel special. They were kind, welcoming, and even got us seated early so we could enjoy happy hour. Ambiance leans classy and bright.
Great beer selection. My wife was thrilled to learn that Tito’s was their “well” vodka in her happy hour martini.
Our bartender was fantastic and also handled our dinner table. Truly stellar service
Attentive without hovering, and full of genuine anniversary well-wishes.
My wife ordered the sole and said it was phenomenal. I’m not typically a fish guy, but even I had to admit it was outstanding. I went with the filet mignon, cooked perfectly, with lobster mashed potatoes that were loaded with lobster — not just a hint, but the real thing.
Exceptional food. Exceptional service. If you’re looking to impress your wife, celebrate something special, or just enjoy a great meal, this is the spot.

Reservations for New years Eve. We went with the pre-fix option. Our seating was not great. Service was good until the end. My main meal was the duck option. It was less than med and medium rare. It was black and blue and couldn’t eat a third of duck breasts. The risotto that came with it was slightly grainy (undercooked, in my opinion), but I didn’t have a difficult time eating it.
I think our waitress knew we weren’t happy with my dish, and it kinda felt like she avoided us. She didn’t charge us for our drinks we ordered outside of the pre fix, which we are grateful for. The soup and shrimp cocktail were good. I lost the love of taking photos of my food when dessert came.
I canceled future reservations for this establishment.

I went with my partner on valentine’s day which is a very busy night for restaurant staff. Regardless, the speed of service, quality of food and customer service shouldn’t suffer drastically. We had a valentines day special menu where we ordered a 3 course meal. The dinner took 3 and a half hours to fully be prepared from appetizers to desert. The steak was burnt and we had to flag a separate waiter down to order the last course of our meal. At the end the manager did comp us back the automatically attached grituity but the meal was over $200 for burnt and cold food.

We ordered the Chicken Alfredo and the Helmsman Burger on Halloween.
Presentation was great, service was great. Many of the waitstaff even dressed up for tbe holiday. Waitstaff was attentive at the right times.
The Chicken and the Burger patty had charmarks that were aesthetically pleasing, but overall made the dishes taste like charcoal/ash/burnt. My alfredo had the texture of unmelted parmesean, and my husband says his burger patty was excessively greasy. He said the fries were amazing. Portions were good.
We like the convenience of it attached to this Marriot- but, we’re unlikely to return during our current or future stays.

Our Christmas holiday dinner worked out well, especially since we were given a private room for our family group, which made the evening feel relaxed and well organized. The atmosphere was pleasant, and arriving early helped us settle in before the rush. One area that could be improved is the lighting in this particular private room, which could be cozier for a dinner setting, and the room’s meeting‑style layout could be blended more fully with a warm dining ambiance. Still, the food and drink selections were strong, offering plenty of appealing choices, and the attentive, upbeat wait staff kept the experience running smoothly from start to finish.

I’ve visited The Helmsman twice now on visits to the Mystic Marriott. The space is beautiful, and the menu had some great choices. My friend and I enjoyed a night out here during the fall, and I had a caramel apple mocktail that was quite possibly the best mocktail I’ve ever had. Our dishes were good, and my fiancé and I were very impressed when we visited another time to try their Valentine’s menu. Our servers were attentive and friendly as well!

Everything was amazing. The Newly renovated space is minimalistic without lacking a thing. Music was great. Our favorite thing was the Caesar salad. Nathan was our server. Nathan was very friendly, knowledgeable of the menu and attentive. Definitely stop in and at least try a Punch and a Kick it is a delightful rum based drink with pineapple & orange juice, mango nectar and grenadine.

I ordered the lobster salad and the lobster pasta, and both were a huge disappointment. The lobster tasted like rubber—chewy, overcooked, and completely flavorless. The service was also terrible; it took forever to get anyone’s attention even though we were the only people dining in the restaurant on a Saturday night. For the prices they charge, the quality and experience were completely unacceptable. I won’t be coming back.

As “locals”, we stop here regularly as it’s a solid place on our drive home after a long day. However, this time, I sat alone at the restaurant bar and had the pleasure of having Tia as my bartender and server. I can’t begin to tell you how awesome she is. Great at her craft, full of energy and made my dinner experience an absolute pleasure. I can’t wait to bring my better half back! Oh, and the prime rib special was good too, so well done kitchen staff, but you have a gem putting it all together!

We were pleasantly surprised by the food which was just as good if not better than a lot of the other hyped up restaurants in Mystic and Groton. Special kudos to Olivia who was beyond friendly, professional, and accommodating.
