I visited Heidelberg to celebrate Oktoberfest, and it was fantastic! The seasonal beer was amazing—crisp, flavorful, and perfectly refreshing. The mashed potatoes and cucumber salad were delicious, and the pretzel was the real star—soft, perfectly baked, and the best I’ve had in a long time.
Even as a vegetarian, there are plenty of great options, and everything I tried was fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. The cozy, welcoming atmosphere makes it a perfect spot for weekend outings, friends and family gatherings, or birthday celebrations. I highly recommend Heidelberg—it’s a must-visit for anyone looking for an authentic German dining experience!
We started with the potato pancakes, which we really liked. They were served with both applesauce and sour cream — my first time trying that combination. The applesauce was an interesting (and surprisingly tasty) pairing.
For my main dish, I ordered the Sauerbraten. The sauce it came with was described as sweet and sour, but I found it mostly sweet — which worked well for me. The beef was a little on the dry side, though I’m not sure if that’s typical for the dish. It came with a potato dumpling that was more like a scoop of mashed potatoes, and a side of red cabbage that had a pleasantly sweet flavor — not what I expected, but I really enjoyed it.
The wifey ordered the Wiener Schnitzel and absolutely loved it. It came with a small serving of lingonberries, home fries, and the same red cabbage that I had.
Overall, we both enjoyed our meal and would definitely come back to try other dishes on the menu.
First thing I noticed was the smell which brought me to another place.
Recommend the sausage platter with 3 different sausages, red cabbage, sauerkraut and german potato salad. Single platter can def serve 2 unless you are starved. Mustards complemented them perfectly. Pretzel delivered and spatzle is amazing.
Usual Spaten lager and Pauliner draft.
Only ordered pork shank. Then sides of home fries.
More than adequate. Hit the spot.
Danke schon

Revisit. Craving for shank and sausage. Can’t go wrong.
One minor issue with billing. Never checked whether tip included but perhaps should.
Otherwise, old faithful. Great stalwart restaurant.

Tried fondue. Nice but favorite still sausages and shank. Sunday brunch farmer’s breakfast ok too. Mimosa & Prosecco for $10.
Shank great. All delicious including potato salad, sauerkraut, cabbage, sausages, mustard. Portion also generous.
Duck also fantastic
Beer selection great too. Liked spaten lager and erdinger.
Very accommodative service at the bar.
Walk-in only, no reservation.
Slightly loud vibe fitting for bar with college town namesake.
Worth a trip out to upper far east. Shall return.
Service (5/5): Danny, our server, gave us the best recommendations (and some customization). Strangely, our waters came after the meal but we were helped timely with our drink and food orders!
Potato Pancakes (4/5): I loved how the pancakes were seasoned with the onion and garlic tones. I wished they were slightly thicker to get more of a crunch. It needed a little more salt but otherwise served with the apple sauce was my preferred option!
Gebratene Ente (Duck) (5/5): This was absolutely divineeee! The duck was cooked to fall off the bone, so tender and packed with flavor. I wished there was more of the gravy that it was cooked in so I could dip everything in it. This is a must have.
Wiener Schnizel (5/5): Per Danny’s recc, we added a side of the Jagerschnitzel gravy and subbed the potatoes with spatzle. Wow, the gravy really gives the bite some extra flavor. The breaded veal was amazing—perfect crunch, nicely flavored, and still delicious reheated. The portions were generous! The spatzle is a soft and buttery side that goes well with the whole dish.
Everything was great and can’t wait to come back!
