My wife and I went to Herbert’s for Breakfast on Friday. The place was slammed. Because we had a appointment to get to, we wondered if there would be enough time. Our worries were immediately put to rest. We were greeted with a smile and gave our drink orders. They were quickly delivered and we gave our food orders. Between 5 and 10 minutes later, our food was delivered piping hot. Everything was fantastic, the food, the service, everything. I encourage anyone traveling to or through Portsmouth, to top and spend some time for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. They’re at 1500 Lafayette Rd in the Market Basket Plaza in Portsmouth.

As a kid, I used to love coming to Heberts and recently moving in Portsmouth I was very excited to have their breakfast. However, having a severe gluten allergy allergy it’s disappointing that all they have that is gluten-free is toast for breakfast. The gluten-free French toast had very little cinnamon flavor. All I had was soaked bread most of the time. Being the youngest one in the restaurant at the time, our server never checked up on us to asked us how our food was, but she checked in with the older generation. Sadly I think this will be our last visit

Don’t let the outside look fool you. Just because it’s in a mini mall does not mean the experience is!

This is a tough one for me. We have never been here and google suggested it might be a place we’d like to try. I feel like the experience could have been better. We walked in and the hostess didn’t looked thrilled. She exhaustively said “Sit wherever you want.” Our hostess was also our waitress. There were no other servers, so the wait was long. We wasted a lot of time looking for a kids meal but we weren’t given a kids menu. Also not on the menu are the drink options. When I asked what the options were after not finding them on the menu, I was answered with “We have Pepsi products.” in a tone as if I was supposed to know what they carry. Finally we were given a kids menu for our daughter. I initially tried their caesar and it was so bland I wouldn’t even serve it as hospital food. Anyhow, I ended up with a different menu item and it was good. But again, the wait was long. The bathrooms were absolutely disgusting. Unclean toilets being leveled with wedges of wood. There were fruit flies in the bathroom. I was swatting them away while washing my hands. The barrel so full it was overflowing onto the floor. You can tell its been a while since the bathroom has been cleaned. If that’s how their bathrooms look, I’m afraid to see the kitchen. So, yeah, the food was “Okay” but the service and the cleanliness could have been, no, should have been way better.

Like every where else, you have to be patient since they are busy and understaffed. They have a great breakfast menu and tasty food. Ordered the hash and we were asked canned or homemade. Never seen shredded carrots in hash, but it was tasty.

Service here is usually a 10/10, today was just a subpar day. There is a waitress here who I just straight adore. She has blonde hair and looks like the woman from 10 Things I Hate About You. She makes the BEST hot chocolate I have ever had and her humor is top tier when you’re eating breakfast. She is someone who JUST GETS IT! I love it. She is so sweet! Do yourself a favor and come to Hebert’s and see the blond waitress. She will totally make your day.

Hebert’s is a bit of a hole in the wall, hidden gem. It blends in with the surrounding area but isn’t a bad place to stop in. Usually I have gone in with my son for a quick, cheap breakfast. Recently I found out about their specials and made it a specific plan to go there on a Thursday night for a boiled dinner since not many places seem to do that. Was ready rather quickly and was exactly what you’d expect. Corned beef, potatoes, carrots, turnips, cabbage, malt vinegar and two dinner rolls. The cabbage was fully cooked so it was soft, not crunchy, and the rest was pretty much like a traditional, home cooked, boiled dinner. Definitely worth the $13. They also gave a container of mustard but I never used it. Looked like a stone ground type of mustard.
