I’d come into this restaurant within a half hour ago. I placed an order to go: eggs, grits & 2 pancakes. The order was ready super fast, only about 3 minutes… the only item hot was the grits. I don’t like how they put a “likely unsanitary” bowl of grits in the same container as the eggs.
The pancakes are thick as hell. You’ll need a drink for certain.

The food is amazing especially tge soups- Chicken Gumbo, chicken Noodle, Cream of Potato. They have great breakfast specials from skillets, chopped steak & eggs, pork chops and more. They dont have a big dessert menu. This restaurant lives up to its name- Hearty Cafe

I had a breakfast special and person with me asked for light oil, and for the first she got 100what she requested! Way to go Hearty Cafe ❤️! I can’t say enough about this place loved it! It is kinda pricy but it’s seems pricy everywhere! Thank you Miguel happy customer! Keep up the good work! I was visiting Chicago and definitely would come again if I was in town.

My partner and I come here all the time. We were so happy to find a local diner that has quick service, great food, and isn’t always super busy. Whenever we come in we are typically sat right away and have our food within 15 minutes of being seated. Tons to choose from on the menu and the prices aren’t cheap but they’re worth what you get. Music can be pretty loud is my only complaint really about this lovely diner.

I’m going to start off by saying I work for CDPH. I didn’t want to make a scene. It took everything in me not to call 311 and file a complaint with Food Protection to pay a visit to this establishment. Now, with that said, let me explain how I arrived at the restaurant ahead of my sister. I asked for a booth and was seated quickly. The waitress brought two cups upside down on saucers and poured coffee into mine while I waited for my sister. Once my sister arrived and turned her mug over, we found lipstick marks on the outside of a supposedly clean mug… okay, no problem. The waitress was appalled and brought another mug. She took our orders. I got a patty melt on rye with mushrooms added, with fries. My sister got the garden skillet with pancakes. It took a while for everything to come. While waiting, I got a cup of cream of chicken & rice soup (too watery and too much lemon), only to have a long hair caught between the bowl and saucer… yes, that went back too. Finally, our food arrived lukewarm. My sister’s butter wouldn’t melt on her pancakes, so we had to send that back as well. By this point, we just nibbled and chatted. Now the bill comes… $52 for this experience! I’m under the impression that management or ownership has changed hands a few times. I know I won’t be returning or recommending this establishment! The waitress was very patient in handling the orders that were not to our taste,.. they replaced the order within hesitancy. I enjoyed the atmosphere. It was a homelike atmosphere. We were greeted at the door by the owner which was a special touch.

On 1/11/26 my sister and I elected to have breakfast at Hearty Cafe. She had never been and I have gone a few times over the years. The food was always delicious and the service was always friendly. On this day, not so much our waitress whose name i don’t recall was extremely delightful. That would be to the extent of what I knew from previous visits.
The first thing was the dirty coffee I got. Red lipstick from a previous user. I told the waitress which she apologized and quickly got a clean one, she inspected it in front of me to be sure it was clean, she left to service another table, there was no regular cream on the table, so I patiently waited until she returned to request cream (non flavored) but sadly now the coffee was lukewarm. We ordered, I ordered the veggie skillet with pancakes, the pancakes were served next to cold, butter was on the table but it too was cold. I did mention it to the waitress which she politely replaced and added melted butter from the kitchen, but now my skillet is cold. My sister ordered the patty melt w/fries and a cup of cream of chicken and rice. The soup was just ok HOWEVER, there was a long strand of hair between the cup and saucer. Seeing that was another huge turn off, although she apologized my sister decided she didn’t want it at all after that. Her fries were good though.
Aside from being extremely disappointed and out of 52.00 FOR BREAKFAST. I was personally embarrassed because I had expressed how good the food was and this was NOT what we expected. Upon checking out the guy at the register asked how was everything, I responded with a “well we had a few problems” and before I could tell him, he responded ok that’ll be 52.00 dollars, do you want to leave a tip? At this point I’m thinking this guy could care less (I did tip the waitress even she was pleasant) but the lack of concern for the question asked was worse than the problems with the food. I WILL NEVER RETURN AND WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND THIS PLACE EVER. It’s disgraceful for the lack of care from the back (obviously no hair covering) no dishwasher to the front with a representative who could care less. Save you dollars, there’s a plethora of breakfast options surrounding the area. Choose one of them and skip this place. Not worth it!

Ist time here.. went with the husbae☺️for breakfast about 9am today. Dining experience was good. Jordy was our waiter. He was very nice, attentive and helpful. I had the sausage skillet w/pancakes and a cup of tea. The skillet was a lil bland even tho the cheddar cheese overwhelmed it, if that makes sense. I’ll definitely come back & try the steak skillet tho! Husbae had pancakes, scrambled eggs, grits and bacon. He said it was very good. I didn’t show the pic of his pancakes cuz I’m embarrassed by the amount of syrup he put on them Poor cakes were drowning! Lol, anywho we’ll definitely be back next week. It’s very kid, family friendly too. The atmosphere is nice with a jazz like instrumental playing softly in the background. Glad we came by cuz this place was on my want to go list for a year. Dnt y’all take too long to check ’em out like me Oh and that’s not a pic of husbae looking at his phone. He got good & full and fell asleep right there on his phone while I finished my tea Snoring & everything! Let me finish up my tea Cnt take him anywhere Good day y’all! ☺️
