We arrived with my family to this place on Thursday arround 3 pm. It was empty only few people. Usually when we see that we leave the place but this time we decided to stay there since it is a very famous place. Everything looked clean and nice, waiter was very nice. We ordered 2 sandwiches and 3 soups . Soups were ok and sandwiches looked beautiful. We ate we even had a dessert piece of cake for 35$. Few hours later my husband and I did not feel well his belly was making noises and I got very noxious. We did not pay attention to it we had some ginger-ale thinking it is just we ate too much. But that night arround 9 pm I got very sick… throwing up using constantly the bathroom and I immediately knew that it must be from that pastrami sandwich I ate…. My husband felt the same ….. big mistake we should have listened to our intuition and left the place once we saw it was not busy .. Never again!!!!

Harold’s Deli is an absolute experience. Holy cow—I didn’t believe the hype until I saw it for myself. The portions are completely insane, easily big enough to feed a small army. The pastrami and corned beef were standouts for me—both incredibly flavorful, tender, and piled sky high. And don’t skip the pickle bar! The red, tomato-looking pickles are hands down the best—I loved them so much I bought a jar on my way out. Great food, fun atmosphere, and a place you have to see to believe. Come hungry and plan on leftovers!

Come here hungry and with other people! Lol the servings are giant everything…. I liked the pastrami sandwich better than Katz because the meat was sliced thin. As far as flavor, both sandwiches tasted the same. This one is the small one. They have a giant one. Chocolate chip pancake was ok. My daughter licked it more than I. The pickle bar was cool, different. The best part of the meal for me was the “Healthy salad” (the pickle salad) service was prompt. Nice servers. Spent $100 + tip for 3 ppl. Clean dinning area, kitchen and bathroom. I would recommend stopping here and I will definitely back.

It’s been years (1990’s) since I went to Harold’s Deli but something changed and sadly it’s not the same. I raved about it to my boyfriend and was surprised he had never been there. It was always packed when my family went. I told him they had huge portions from what I remembered and you could buy a sandwich and it would last a couple days and it was delicious. We stopped in for a burger and fries and split it because I was thinking it would be huge (a mammoth burger). He had a tea, I had water. It ended up being a 36.68 bill (not including tip) for a tasteless “not so mammoth” bacon cheeseburger and plain steak fries that were a little undercooked and tasted like they were cooked in old oil. We put salt and pepper on the fries but it didn’t help the taste at all. We regretted not choosing 5 Guys where it would have been tastier and cheaper. And you get a bag full of seasoned fries and a burger that you enjoy every bite. The coleslaw was pretty good and the pickle salad and hot red pepper from the pickle bar wasn’t bad either. They tasted better than the burger and fries. I love pickles but I wasn’t crazy about the taste of the pickles from the pickle bar either. The red hot pepper was good, I’d recommend that! I was very disappointed because Harold’s was not like I remembered. I had a bellyache after we left. Maybe my tastes have changed as I’ve gotten older but we unfortunately won’t be going back. This isn’t a great picture. I was surprised at how small the portion was for the price and we had cut the burger in 1/2 so the top is smooshed a bit. Maybe the Pastrami is the biggest draw there these days. I hope it tastes a lot better than the burger. If you’re going for a tasty burger, I’d recommend going elsewhere. Other people I know still love Harold’s Deli though. This was just our experience.

I used to come here when I was little and I’m so glad that it is still kicking decades later. Harold’s deli should. It be missed. This Jewish deli has huge cakes, great sandwiches and a matzo ball so big they literally gave it to us in a bucket when we ordered it to go. Not kidding like the size of soccer ball. We got one sandwich and it served 3 people. If you are in the area definitely swing by for the biggest meal you’ve had in a long time

Pricey, NY Style Deli in NJ. The type that is rapidly disappearing in NYC. Food is pretty good, but is expensive for what it is. HUGE portions. One sandwich can easily feed 3-4 people. Not much in salads. The pickels could be better, but still good. Great for large parties. A Man vs. Food stop. Cakes look good but so big, no one wanted them after a meal. Plenty of parking since it’s in a closed hotel space.

New Jersey food culture is a byproduct of the garden state functioning as a giant suburb for the 2 greatest food cities in America, New York City and Philadelphia. You’ll find legendary Italian restaurants, pizzerias, and delis that will rival some of the most famous in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Staten Island, Manhattan, and south Philly. We have cheesesteaks that are up there with Philly’s best, the best bagels outside of NYC, and no state, at least on the east coast, can compete with us when it comes to hot dogs. If you want something different, New Jersey is perhaps the most ethically diverse state in America with so many different cuisine options from across the world. We’re also considered the diner capital of the world.

But one thing that hasn’t carried over as much, at least when it comes to New York food culture in particular, are those great Jewish delis. And no, I’m not talking about bagel shops, but traditional Kosher or Kosher style delis like the world famous Katz’s Deli that specialize in Ashkenazi or European Jewish comfort food, like hot pastrami and corned beef sandwiches on rye, matzo ball soup and borscht, kreplach and cabbage rolls, latkes and knishes, among other delicacies. Outside of a couple handful of places, they’re not that prominent in New Jersey, as the Jewish community in the garden state is a bit more scattered compared to New York. But with every rule, there comes exceptions, and in this case, it’s Harold’s in Edison more than fits the bill.

One of the two most well-known Jewish delis in New Jersey by a long shot (the other being the iconic Hobby’s Deli in Newark) Harold’s was started up by a former manager of the legendary and now defunct Carnegie deli in New York. Their massive sandwiches, particularly the pastrami, has been compared with the likes of Carnegie and Katz’s. While I’ve never tried those legendary New York establishments, just a couple bites into their hot pastrami and cured tongue sandwiches that I ordered and I could see why they have garnered such high praise. By far better than any pastrami sandwich I’ve had before, and legitimately one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had of any kind. Some Jersey diners make a quality hot pastrami or corn beef sandwich, but nothing quite of this caliber. In addition, I ordered a cup of their cold borscht, which I must admit I might like even better than the hot borscht I’ve tried in the past at several polish restaurants and delis. Their knish is the size of a dinner plate, and absolutely fantastic. Harold’s also has an incredible pickle bar, which I’m told is one of a kind.

Outside of the food, the service was great and the atmosphere was clean and overall incredible. It felt like I was in one of those iconic places in Manhattan with all the incredible New York themed memorabilia scattered throughout the walls, along with displays of all the different rewards they’ve won and the shows they’ve been on.

I must say as a lifelong New Jerseyan of almost 30 years with a Jewish mother, I’m almost embarrassed how long it’s taken me to come here, but I’m so glad I did. I can’t wait to come back, and I also can’t wait to eventually try Katz’s and Hobby’s to properly compare the three. 10 out of 10 experience all around.

Harold’s doesn’t serve anything on the small size except perhaps the kid’s portion or the junior size sandwiches. I could only eat half of my junior-sized sandwich because of the HUGE matzah ball soup. The soup is so big and quite tasty. Never made it to desserts which there were quite a few since we were all stuffed! Next time will bring a dessert home!

Nothing bad here. Just good food. Pastrami is tenter and juicy. Fries, drinks all good. Rice pudding was huge and delicious. Not great but the size makes up for it.
