The food was good, no legit complaints. However, it lacked any wow factor, and that surprised me. Given the traffic flow I would have expected greater pop. That having been said, everything was good. Our server was kind and attentive. I had no issue clearing my plate. I’d like to try more things from the menu for a wider experience. I recommend you drop in too!
For my first entree I ordered Chilaquile. I requested no pico or anything with cilantro with my meal. First time out, lots of pico. Second time out, the green salsa they use is full of cilantro.
That was disappointing, but they absolutely handled the issue with professionalism.
The only bummer was how loud the interior is. No carpet, lots of loud echo.
SERVICE – 4.5 out of 5.
Harney Street Cafe is a table service eatery. In the past visits, it is usually self-seat when it’s not busy, but when busy then you will see a ‘wait to be seated’ sign. So, today was self-seat. Our service person was quick to bring out tableware, menus and shared the ‘Day’s Special’. Friendly and not intrusive. Quick with coffee. Overall, it met my expectations when it comes to food service establishment.
PRICE – 4.0 out of 5.
The prices here have gone up, but I’m not surprised considering that it’s happening everywhere in the Portland area. Regardless, if pricing goes up, the quality of service or food, if not both, should go up. Today, Harney Street Cafe did a great job with both service and food for the price.
TIPPING – 3.5 out of 5.
Honestly, here is where I’ve been quite annoyed with services lately. Tipping should be for exceptional service that is above and beyond the baseline. Everywhere in Portland, every business seems to now start tipping at either 18% or 20%. Harney Street Cafe starts at 15%, which is typically the industry standard.
QUALITY – 4.5 out of 5.
Now this is where the food comes in. I ordered the Lumberjack which is $19. My wife wanted my pancakes off my plate. Didn’t want to go big today. So Lumberjack came with (2) eggs, (2) pancakes, (2) house made sausage patties, (2) strips of bacon, and potatoes. This time around I asked for Soft Scramble. Seems Frenchy-ish of me. However, it was done quite well. Overall, it was all tasty. The only gripe was that the pancakes were a little thin. Not as fluffy, but still tasty.
Our friend got the ‘Day’s Special’. For the price, portion, ingredients and tastiness, Harney Street Cafe did such a great job with his food that he ate it pretty quickly.
ESTABLISHMENT – 4.5 out of 5.
Harney Street Cafe is an established neighborhood eatery French-like farmhouse feel. Being here several times, the place still feels it has a nice and airy space. The bathroom is clean, the vents are still kept clean (No caking of dust! Yeah!). Tables were full of patrons but it wasn’t overly loud. There’s a lot of natural light coming in, as well. All which is great on the senses.
Often after each meal, I would ask at the table, “Would you come back?”, which in my case, I have already answered that several times over.
So, if ever in the Sellwood neighborhood, try Harney Street Cafe at least once and decide for yourself. Enjoy!
Food had zero flavor, not even salt. Only good thing on our plates were the potatoes and they were nothing special. Sausage gravy tasted like water, my partner’s chanterelle mushrooms in here omelette were bitter and WHO serves bacon like this?! I wanted to get a pastry but after tasting the food I decided not to risk it.
