So sad. The meat is super dry, ribs are tough and brisket is wayyyy too dry to have such thick cuts. Sides are amazing and sauces are great, just a shame the meat was really not impressive. Service was nice, but we couldn’t get the check for a while on a normal Saturday afternoon after already getting to-go boxes. Atmosphere is great! Great music and space.

After traveling from Japan to Los Angeles and seeing Ohtani-san play, I came to San Francisco the next day and was craving BBQ ribs. I decided to trust the great Google reviews and give this place a try — and it was absolutely worth it.

The ribs were tender, smoky, and full of flavor, and the brisket was fantastic as well. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, with friendly service that made the experience even better.

Such a perfect meal to start my time in San Francisco. Highly recommend if you love authentic BBQ!

Came on a very busy day with it being Folsom street fair weekend, but the staff was rushing around to make sure everyone was taken care of. Their food, and especially their blackened catfish – fantastic!!! Was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of BBQ here, especially being in SF. 100% will return

A Texas BBQ Enthusiast’s Take
My recent dinner at Hardwood Bar & Smokery, consisting of the Smoked Spare Ribs with sides of Mac Salad and Seasoned Curly Fries, was a perfectly adequate meal—but sadly, that’s where the praise stops. For anyone accustomed to the genuine article, especially the gold standard of Texas barbecue,

Pastrami Thursdays, be there. The Reuben was so good! What’s even better? $2 Montucky during happy hour on Thursday, too: 4-7 pm (HH 4-7 daily).

The coleslaw is more vinegar based. The curly fries are crisp and seasoned well. We shared the Reuben and 2 small sides with 2 Montucky each for $45.

Perfect casual spot for ribs. Everything we had was great: beer, ribs, brisket “chilli” cheese fries. It didn’t really taste like chilli perse but still phenomenal. The bbq sauce is the perfect balance of sweet and tangy! Must try!

I’ve been here a few times now and I finally feel like I need to say something. This place is just really good.

I spent half my life in Alabama and Texas, so I don’t mess around when it comes to barbecue. I know good food and I know BBQ. The ribs here are smacking. Full of flavor and cooked exactly the way they should be. The coleslaw took me straight back to my childhood. It tastes just like the kind my mom used to make when I was growing up. The turnip greens are on point, and the chicken… wow. Juicy, flavorful, and honestly one of my favorite things on the menu.

The cornbread muffins and the beans deserve their own shoutout too. Both were really good and the kind of sides that actually matter, not just filler on the plate.

And I can’t forget the sauces. The BBQ sauce is awesome, and the hot sauce is great too. Both actually add to the food instead of covering it up, which is exactly how it should be.

Brisket is a personal thing. I tend to like mine more on the sugar crust or candy bark side with that peppery Texas style. So while it’s not my top pick here, that’s purely preference. Every friend I’ve brought with me loves it, and that says a lot.

What I also appreciate is that there’s still so much on the menu I haven’t even tried yet. That’s always a good sign and honestly one of the reasons I keep coming back. There’s plenty left to explore.

I also have to give real credit to the staff. Everyone is genuinely kind, welcoming, and clearly enjoys what they do. The vibe is relaxed, friendly, and comfortable, which makes the whole experience even better. And I won’t lie, the staff is pretty good looking too.

Great food, great atmosphere, great people. This is the kind of place you come back to without even thinking about it. Highly recommend.

One of the best bbq restaurants in San Francisco. They do an incredible job with smoking their meats. Really solid menu, the nachos are probably my favorite item on the menu. It’s hard to mimic good bbq in these parts but Hardwood is stepping up and killing it.

The barbecue fork spare ribs was really soft and delicious. Smoked smell was very good. But the brisket was too dry and hard. The atmosphere of the restaurant was good, the staff was very friendly, and it was impressive that they were tactful to meet our demands.
