The ribs were tender, smoky, and full of flavor, and the brisket was fantastic as well. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, with friendly service that made the experience even better.
Such a perfect meal to start my time in San Francisco. Highly recommend if you love authentic BBQ!
They have a very solid spirits menu. Ive already told a couple of people about this place
My recent dinner at Hardwood Bar & Smokery, consisting of the Smoked Spare Ribs with sides of Mac Salad and Seasoned Curly Fries, was a perfectly adequate meal—but sadly, that’s where the praise stops. For anyone accustomed to the genuine article, especially the gold standard of Texas barbecue,
The coleslaw is more vinegar based. The curly fries are crisp and seasoned well. We shared the Reuben and 2 small sides with 2 Montucky each for $45.
I spent half my life in Alabama and Texas, so I don’t mess around when it comes to barbecue. I know good food and I know BBQ. The ribs here are smacking. Full of flavor and cooked exactly the way they should be. The coleslaw took me straight back to my childhood. It tastes just like the kind my mom used to make when I was growing up. The turnip greens are on point, and the chicken… wow. Juicy, flavorful, and honestly one of my favorite things on the menu.
The cornbread muffins and the beans deserve their own shoutout too. Both were really good and the kind of sides that actually matter, not just filler on the plate.
And I can’t forget the sauces. The BBQ sauce is awesome, and the hot sauce is great too. Both actually add to the food instead of covering it up, which is exactly how it should be.
Brisket is a personal thing. I tend to like mine more on the sugar crust or candy bark side with that peppery Texas style. So while it’s not my top pick here, that’s purely preference. Every friend I’ve brought with me loves it, and that says a lot.
What I also appreciate is that there’s still so much on the menu I haven’t even tried yet. That’s always a good sign and honestly one of the reasons I keep coming back. There’s plenty left to explore.
I also have to give real credit to the staff. Everyone is genuinely kind, welcoming, and clearly enjoys what they do. The vibe is relaxed, friendly, and comfortable, which makes the whole experience even better. And I won’t lie, the staff is pretty good looking too.
Great food, great atmosphere, great people. This is the kind of place you come back to without even thinking about it. Highly recommend.
