Hard Hat Tavern in Durham is the place that locals always frequent and foodies always find! Delicious food in a pub atmosphere. We are know for our Doob wings which are seasoned, fried and grilled, making them a smoky twist on the classic buffalo wing. Our burgers and sandwiches are gourmet. Our chefs are always looking to bring out new flavors and to bring in seasonal items through our weekly specials. With 12 beers on tab and over 25 varieties of bottled beers ranging from local brews, to craft beers, to the American classics there is no end to the combinations of food and drink at the Hard Hat Tavern. Visited the Hard Hat Tavern in Durham, CT. On 8.27.25. Right off Rte 17. I found the restaurant to be cozy. Sat in the bar area. The stool was a bit high for my 5 foot frame but was ok. I had water with lemon and the All American burger with French fries and a side of mango salsa for lunch. The burger was done the way I like it, medium well. The fries were just enough and tasty. They have bison burger on the menu! Wow! My meal was very tasty.
They have a Mexican night on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 4. Italian night. Fridays they have music bingo. Interesting concept. I am going to try that next. On Sundays is Funday with $10 drinks and live music.
There is a dining area as well and outside dining, which was very nice with plenty of tables. Loved the spanish music they had playing on the radio!
They have 2 other locations: North Haven and Wallingford in addition to this one in Durham.
On the menu, you will also find wraps, handhelds, soups & salads, small plates, wings, steaks, pasta, you name it, you will find it at this restaurant.
I enjoyed my meal here and you will too.
I give this restaurant: 4 stars.

Everybody in the restaurant was friendly and we felt very comfortable here. Then we ordered food….. My husband ordered a burger that was cooked properly and wasn’t bad he said, his French fries though were soggy and room temperature. I ordered prime rib, which was okay it’s not great not worth the price but it was okay and I ate it. My broccoli was rock hard and cold alongside my dry but tasty mashed potatoes. Place was slow so I can imagine how the food is when it’s busy.

Cozy spot with good comfort food! I really love the vibe here, especially visiting in the fall – the decorations were adorable! Their new fall menu and drinks are perfect for the season, and it’s a nice spot to come watch the game. They even have a really good BOGO happy hour deal on wings that’s worth checking out! Some of my favorites were their signature doob style wings, loaded nachos, and the sweet potato fries with a unique marshmallow sauce! The personal pizza was really tasty too.

We had my husband’s military retirement party in the dining room. I worked out a menu with Missy. The day of the party was excellent Kaiti did a fantastic job setting everything up and ensuring that we had excellent service. Good was great Fernando and his kitchen team did fantastic. I was very thankful for the intimate space available for parties. I highly recommend using Hard Hat in Durham for catered parties and events.

This place was awesome! Food was sooo good and big portions. The service was like beauty and the beast. All the kitchen help came out at once to deliver our orders. Quick – efficient – tasty. Also there was guitar player in other word. Not tooooo loud. Still could enjoy conversation at our table.

Cozy and welcoming atmosphere with super friendly staff! Fantastic beer selection. Started with Philly Steak Egg rolls. “Shaved steak and American cheese served with chipotle mayo”. Then Chopped Steak Salad “chopped greens, candied pecans, chopped tomatoes, hardboiled egg and red peppers tossed with balsamic blue cheese vinaigrette and sliced Bourbon Sirloin”. I had The Triple Crown “Perfectly cooked medium burger; BBQ sauce, bacon and cheddar cheese on a brioche bun”. Terrence was our server and was terrific but the whole team was attentive and helpful.

3 times wasn’t the charm. We have gone 3 times since they opened (and a door dash order) and weren’t happy with any experiences. Service issues every time! Inexperienced, slow waitstaff and bartenders. Got tired of waiting 15 minutes for a drink and getting drinks that weren’t made correctly. Even the manager on duty last night wasn’t good at keeping things flowing.

Had to try this new restaurant out and it did not disappoint! From the complementary valet service, no wait time (even though lot was packed), excellent food and drinks! 100% recommend going here!!

We had our company holiday luncheon here. I can’t rave enough about every aspect of our experience. Beginning with the 1st call to Hard Hat, the treatment we received was top notch. Missy was beyond accommodating. She worked with me every step of the way to be sure our menu selection and quantities were going to leave smiles and full bellies. We decided on wings and salad for starters. The wings came in 3 flavors…spicy, plain, and buffalo…something to satisfy all tastebuds! The Hard Hat salad was loaded with fixings. It’s now one of my favorites. For entrees, we had meatloaf and chicken parm. Both equally as delicious as the other! The meatloaf came with creamy mashed potatoes and we added penne vodka and broccoli. All were perfect sides! The room was festively decorated and the food was delicious! Katie, our server, didn’t miss a beat! She and Missy were constantly attending to our needs and making sure the food never ran out. Just when I thought they couldn’t make us any happier, they threw in FRESHLY BAKED chocolate chip cookies. They were bigger than my hand!!! Missy, Katie, and the Hard Hat staff, we thank you for helping to make our holiday celebration absolutely wonderful!
