We ordered the Aye Aye Smokehouse burger and the Jay bird Patty Melt. Double burgers for each, which was a good idea because the burgers looked like smashburgers (thin), so the 2 together were the size of what a normal burger should be. The burgers had no char on them at all. It was almost like the griddle was overloaded and not hot enough, so they couldn’t fry up nice and crisp/charred on the outside. Same with the bacon, it was very soft, not crisp. They went super light on the BBQ sauce for the smokehouse burger, with just the smallest drizzle on the bottom bun. And even though the Jaybird was supposed to have their ‘wicked harbor sauce’ on it, the bread was dry. I doctored it up at home with some Chipotle mayo. The fries were completely unseasoned, though they were really nice about giving me a side of vinegar. They advertise the burgers as a blend of Angus, chuck, brisket and short rib. And flavor-wise, you could tell, because it was tasty. Just needed a better char so it didn’t have the consistency of being steamed.
Both double burgers and 2 small sides of fries came to $30. I will likely not go back and wouldn’t really recommend it either, but everyone has different tastes.
1. Food quality: I ordered the classic Harbor smashed burgers, which were unfortunately overcooked with burnt edges. The onion rings were decent, but several fried items I saw going to other tables also appeared overcooked and dark.
2. Hygiene concerns: The open kitchen is visible from the dining area, and I noticed several practices that raised red flags. None of the kitchen staff wore gloves while handling food. One cook was texting on his phone between tasks, and I didn’t see anyone wash their hands during my visit. Additionally, both cooks and counter staff were eating while working and then immediately handling customer orders and serving food.
3. Tipping policy: Like many counter-service spots, the payment terminal prompts for a tip before any service is provided. As someone who strongly dislikes this practice in fast-casual settings (where there’s no table service), it left a bad taste—especially when wondering how staff might react to skipped tips.
Overall, the concept and atmosphere have great potential. With some adjustments to cooking times, stricter hygiene protocols, and perhaps rethinking the tipping prompt, this could easily become a favorite spot. I’ll be rooting for improvements and would love to return once things are tightened up.
We tried a bacon burger, regular cheeseburger and a chicken sandwich.
They were good, but not anything different or exceptional.
I love crinkle fries so I was partial to those, although they were very bland and we had to add salt. Sometimes I appreciate that so you control the amount, but they should have at least had some to start with.
The cheeseburger was flavorful, but it had more lettuce and onion than meat. The chicken was nicely fried and crispy but again, nothing special.
The building is fun and you can tell they have plans to expand into more desserts/products.
I wish I would have tried a shake because they did look delicious.
The service was friendly, the place was clean, and everything came out fresh. Simple, solid food done right, definitely a five-star stop in my book.
