Happy Sushi is a very solid choice for sushi for anyone who is visiting or local to Springfield. The owner is truly passionate about his craft and gives generous amount of fish in every roll/dish.

The food is good quality and comes in generous portions. The fish tastes pretty fresh considering what you can find in Springfield. The rolls on his menu are well flavored and not overwhelming. As a bonus, the owner will occasionally give out hand rolls to customers who come and dine in.

The staff and owner are extremely friendly and are tentative. The atmosphere is comfy and quiet. It’s a small space but it’s comfortable.

This place is definitely a hole in the wall type of experience. My wife and I have eaten sushi from all over (in the states and Japan included) and we both agree that this spot satisfies our sushi fix.

Happy Sushi certainly feels like the proper Sushi in the Midwest experience. The place is quiet with a relaxed atmosphere, far from upscale and complete with TV playing the latest east Asian pop music videos. It sells itself as a take-out restaurant though, so I think it delivers that feeling well.

The service was exceptional, even outside of the complimentary hand roll they offered at the end of my meal. Quick, friendly, and simple. What I would hope to see at a quick take-out spot like this one.

The food quality was pretty great. Good tasting fish, lovely texture and flavor in the rice, and even the soup and salad were just right and complimented the meal well. My only gripe is a similar problem I saw at some other sushi restaurants in Springfield. The individual pieces are too big. Nigiri and Maki rolled or cut to this size make it difficult to properly handle with chopsticks. Leading to mishaps like dropping fish on the soy sauce, or the fish and rice coming apart. I’d much rather have more manageable bites than simply ‘more food’ when it comes to sushi. That said, I would bet their dinner plates are fantastically packed.

Overall, a solid 4/5. I’d likely go again for the quality, but I’ll likely hesitate when I remember the eating experience.

Such an amazing little hole-in-the-wall spot! The sushi is incredibly fresh and high quality — every roll is made with so much care and flavor. You can truly taste the difference.

The owner is also SO kind and welcoming, which makes the experience even better. It’s rare to find food this good with such genuine hospitality. Definitely one of the best local gems in town!

It is due to Happy Sushi in Springfield Illinois I love sushi as I do now. That is testament to the quality of ingredients he uses and the attention to detail Mr Hiro-san attaches to all he presents. And the presentation is always a delicious sight. I eat with my eyes first, then my stomach.

I try my best to try different items on the menu, but I always have to have the spicy salmon. Chase and I, whenever we desire sushi, it is to Happy Sushi in Springfield Illinois. Always. Last time we visited, I tried the spicy salmon handroll and it was simply sacred. No talking, plenty of being in the moment with this handroll.

The welcome you receive from Mr Hiro-san, I can liken to the welcome you get from an older relative who is truly delighted to receive you in their home, they’ve gone out of their way to prepare a feast for you. Making a fuss of you.

It’s a perfectly small place with a few seats in the front and a few more in the hallway and that’s where we like to park ourselves. Feels truly intimate and inviting.

You’d be forgiven for blowing past its location, and I submit thats a part of what makes it the incredible charm it is. But you know now. If you do decide to visit, please call ahead and make sure they’re open. I love this place and Mr Hiro-san forever.

I want to start this whole thing by saying that in all the years that my wife and I have been going here, and with all the times that she’s thought we should share our feelings about Happy Sushi in Springfield, Illinois, I refused. Happy Sushi is my own sacred space, and because of that, as deeply selfish as I know it to be, I didn’t want to share this with the world crowd and them, anyone else, touch what’s mine.

I found this little gem a couple of years before my wife and I got married and that was in 2014. I share that only to say this, outside of her, I don’t tend to share this place with others.
It was road trip with some other fellas and as often happened during that time, when we reached our destination, they wanted to do one thing, and I another. I found Happy Sushi while I was out riding on my Harley, by my lonesome, and truthfully, even back in 2012-ish, it’s not the kind of place that you actually look at and think, “yeah, I wanna stop there and eat their food.”

That’s not a slam of the people or even the location, rather, if you’re looking for posh, for etiquette and finery, then you might want to pass on this place.

But once you go in…

It’s not just the food. That spicy tuna, impossibly fresh, with spice, but not too much, and not some translucent whisper of fish, but a full-bodied declaration that says, “yeah baby, this is what it’s supposed to taste like.” Mr. Hiro-San doesn’t do flash. Just delicious-ass sushi that challenges your notions of what sushi is supposed to taste like.

And do to your senses. To your soul.

And you see, that’s why I don’t want to share this place with those that want to rush there, take selfies with their phones and post for likes and virality; this is a sacred space for those that cherish, respect and relish the artistry that is Mr. Hiro-San and Happy Sushi.

To say: this man, this place, this experience—matters in ways that we don’t tend to associate with food. But in the way you’d write a letter to a friend and say, “If you ever need to feel something real again, if you ever forget that food can be art and touch and prayer all at once—go here.”

That’s Happy Sushi.

To me.

So if you go, just… don’t ruin it.

Go there to feel.

The sushi here is incredibly fresh and beautifully presented—the salmon literally melts in your mouth. But what really makes this place special is the owner. They are one of the kindest people I’ve ever met and truly go out of their way to make every customer feel like family.
Great food and even better service. I’ll definitely be a regular here!

My wife, our infant, and I arrived at Happy Sushi at 2:22, which is 8 minutes before they close for a few hours. The owner was very nice and welcomed us to dine-in. We ordered 3 sushi rolls which were all delicious. While we were eating, our infant daughter became fussy and the owner came out to talk to her and put music on the TV for her. He was very friendly and accommodating for us.

I highly recommend Happy Sushi for the good food, the modest atmosphere, and wonderful owner.

We accidentally came across this place after about to check out a restaurant nearby. So glad we stopped by here instead on our way up north! Authentic Sushi, very friendly servers, generous portion.

Owner is the Happy Sushi Chef himself and generously gave us two hand rolls after knowing we’re just a passerby!

My dad and I have been frequently coming here since around or before the pandemic. The food is incredibly delicious and well-crafted. The staff are exceptionally kind and deserve the most you can possibly tip. I hope whatever sushi place outside of Springfield has food this good with people this kind. Support your local sushi man!

I have heard that this place was the best.
When I was in town, I decided to grab some rolls to-go.
I can’t eat nori, and they had soy paper to accommodate my dietary needs.
I ordered three rolls and when they handed me my bag , she told me that the chef threw in a tuna hand roll for free!
I thanked him and headed home.
Upon opening the takeout containers, I was surprised to find the details of garnish and presentation to be top notch.
The rolls were large and absolutely DELICIOUS!
I will definitely go here when I’m back in town.

We used to love Happy Sushi and we ate there often. Over this year the quality has diminished significantly. Today we ordered a Philadelphia roll That came with yellow avocado that was mushy, the cream cheese was warm, and the salmon also felt mushy. I ate two of the rolls, but was unable to continue. Now that it is settled for about an hour, I have vomited. This is so disappointing as we used to go here all the time. I called the store to inform them of this. They offered to remake the order but I said no. I told them I wanted to let them know to hopefully avoid getting others sick. The woman on the phone got defensive and said no one else has called in to say they’re sick instead of acknowledging there may be something wrong. I informed her that there is a picture available here for their reference. Very disappointed in the service here.
